 SETHIAN GNOSTICISM:
The metaphysical structure of both Allogenes and Zostrianos, as well as Three Steles of Seth, appears to be centered on the triad Father-Mother-Son as is the case with the Gospel of the Egyptians, Apocryphon of John, and Trimorphic Protennoia.
Zostrianos is heavily indebted to the Sethian dramatis personae especially as they occur in Gospel of the Egyptians, and collects these into three rather distinct blocks (Zost.
I.29, Apocryphon of John, Gospel of the Egyptians, Allogenes, Zostrianos, Three Steles of Seth, Marsanes and Trimorphic Protennoia), it seems that the material common to the Apocryphon of John and Iren.

 The Holy Order of O:N:E:
In contrast to these two revelations in which knowledge concerning the future course of history is communicated from the higher realm to the lower by an angelic intermediary, we also find three apocalypses which relate the singular experience of a gnostic visionary who himself achieves enlightenment through an ecstatic ascent through the divine world.
In fact, nearly everything in Zostrianos as it now stands can be derived from the Apocryphon of John, the Gospel of the Egyptians and Allogenes except for the names of certain figures peculiar to itself.
However, there may be adequate warrant for placing Allogenes and Zostrianos at a time before Plotinus, since most of their doctrine could be drawn from Numenius, the Chaldaean Oracles and other second century Platonic sources, in addition to similar notions found in the Apocryphon of John.

THE FIGURE OF HECATE AND DYNAMIC EMANATIONISM IN THE
Intimately related to these three treatises and especially to Zostrianos, whose author was probably the first to introduce the Existence, Vitality and Intellect triad to Sethian theology, is the Sethian Apocryphon of John, ostensibly our first witness to the complete Gnostic myth of Sophia, the fallen divine Wisdom as creator and redeemer of this world.
One may begin with Allogenes, which is representative of the metaphysical doctrine of Zostrianos and The Three Steles of Seth ; its doctrine of the Triple Powered One is the crucial feature by which the treatise can be placed at a definite point in the Platonic metaphysical tradition.
But what now can be said of the sources of the metaphysical doctrine of Allogenes ?

What does the the Bible say?
One of the Nag Hammadi texts ('Trimorphic Protennoia') was written by someone who was still a worshipper of Inanna, a Member of the Heavenly Host whom the wizards had worshipped.
Another text ('Zostrianos') was clearly Zoroastrian in those formative years.
And in Italy as former wizards joined the Roman tabernacle, compromises were made with Inanna worship, but it is important to note that Inanna had enjoyed a high status among the Heavenly Host.

 Gnostic Gospels
Zostrianos, the longest text in the Nag Hammadi library, tells how one spiritual master attained enlightenment, implicitly setting out a program for others to follow.
I did not cease seeking a place of rest worthy of my spirit But then, becoming 'deeply troubled' ' discouraged with his progress, he went out into the desert, half anticipating being killed by wild animals.
Second, he had to reduce 'chaos in niind'," stilling his mind with meditation.

 "The Hekhalot Literature and Shamanism"
Zostrianos used prayer, isolation, (heavenly) immersions, and _nomina barbara_ in association with his heavenly journey and angelic guides in the Coptic gnostic Zostrianos tractate.
Ezra used fasting, prayer, and isolation to prepare to meet (summon?) the angel Uriel in 4 Ezra.
The Qumran texts include a physiognomic tract that allows one to determine the amount of "light" and "darkness" in (i.e., the eternal destiny of) individuals based on their physical characteristics and astrological signs (4Q186; cf.

The codices also include pages devoted to new year rituals, and almanacs that follow the sacred round of the 260-day tzolk'in.
Porphyry also mentions by name two Gnostic treatises that were discovered in Egypt in 1945, and are now readily available to scholars: Zostrianos, and Allogenes, in the Nag Hammadi Collection of Codices.
More than any of these accomplishments, however, it was the discovery in 1945, in Egypt, of a large collection of Coptic Gnostic codices, now known as the Nag Hammadi Collection, or the Nag Hammadi Library.

In the Gnostic scripture Zostrianos, we are told that the "…glories are perfect concepts, appearing unto powers…they are patterns of salvation…".

Amazon.de: English Books: The Nag Hammadi Library in English: Revised Edition
Although there are different approaches and contradictions, I get the following main message from the Nag Hammadi texts: every individual must find the divine in themselves, in other words, the kingdom of heaven is within.
The excellent introduction by James M. Robinson discusses what is known about the history of the Gnostics, the background to the documents and their theological significance.
The works that I find fascinating include The Gospels of Thomas and Philip, The Thunder: Perfect Mind, The Concept Of Our Great Power, Asclepius 21 - 29, The Three Steles of Seth, The Exegesis of the Soul, Zostrianos and The Apocalypse of Peter.

Texts from this period of decline include Marsenes and the Bruce Codex.
