Zion - definition of Zion in Encyclopedia
Beyond that, Zion is used to symbolize Jerusalem and the Promised Land of God to come, in which God dwells among his chosen people.
In a spiritual sense, Zion is regarded by LDS as a perfect social state of being of "pure in heart" believers, where all people have all things in common, and there is no suffering nor impoverished among them.
Zion or Tzion (ציון "Height", Standard Hebrew Ẓiyyon, Tiberian Hebrew Ṣiyyôn; Arabic صهيون Ṣuhyūn) originally was the specific name given to a Jebusite fortress near modern-day Jerusalem that was conquered by David.

 Zion
Since spiritual Zion represents God’s purified people and true church, and God’s professed followers are supposed to be in the process of overcoming all their sins, but they have not yet perfected their characters; these would be likened to sinners in Zion.
So God’s Zion, His true church, is not composed of all the denominations, or even just one denomination—including the SDA church, but it is composed of faithful souls who purify their souls in loving obedience to Christ—their King of Zion!
This destruction to Zion, Jerusalem, and the Temple, was because of the determined, unrepentant, and wicked leaders of the church who chose apostasy against God instead of obedience and righteousness.

Churchlink - Destiny of the Church - Lesson 8
Throughout Scripture (both the Old and the New Testaments), Zion is used to represent the people of God.

Zion - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
The term "Daughter of zion" is applied to the captive Jews (Lamentations 4:22), but in other references to the people of Jerusalem (Isaiah 1:8; 52:2; Jeremiah 4:31, etc.).
In many of the later writings, particularly poetical references, Zion appears to be the equivalent of Jerusalem; either in parallelism (Psalms 102:21; Amos 1:2; Micah 3:10,12; Zechariah 1:14,17; 8:3; Zechariah 3:16) or alone (Jeremiah 3:14; Lamentations 5:11); even here many of the references will do equally well for the Temple Hill.
Among the earlier Christian writers who mention "Zion," Origen used it as equivalent to the Temple Hill, but in the 4th century writers commence to localize it up the southern part of the western hill.

Matrix in a Matrix theory: Is Zion real?
Maybe the most important reason is that (according to the Architect) there have been 5 Zion destructions before, but according to the timeline as we know it, there has been no time.
Please note, that all arguments for this theory (= Neo returned to a wrong Zion from the Architect) remain valid, no matter whether Zion itself is real or not.
Thus we could conclude by the combination of "suffering" and "the prophecy" alone that Zion turns into a religious place.
