Yidam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Buddhism, a Yidam (Tibetan) or Ishtadevata (Sanskrit) is a fully enlightened being who is the focus of personal meditation, during a retreat or for one's life.
A Yidam is an enlightened being with whom one identifies during meditation: one perceives his or her own Buddha nature through such identification.
Yidams are not to be equated with patron saints or guardian angels found in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions.

WAiB - Female Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
Samantabhadri (Kuntuzangmo in Tibetan) is the consort and female counterpart of Samantabhadra/Kuntuzangpo, the primordial Buddha of the older schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Dorje Naljorma, Adamantine Female Practitioner) is the principal female yidam of Highest Yoga Tantra of the New Translation schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

 Dharma Dictionary - Yidam
Yidams may be sambhogkaya buddhas, tantric deities, bodhisattvas, dharma protectors or historical figures.
The yidam is one of the so-called Three Roots that are the objects of refuge in vajrayana: the guru, the yidams, and the protectors and dakinis.
To define the concept of the yidam is to approach the essence of Tibetan Buddhism.

 Glossary of Terms
Yidam is sometimes referred to as one’s meditational deity or one’s tutelary deity.
In short, a yidam is the practitioner’s personal or main deity for Tantric practice; i.e., the deity with which the practitioner has the strongest connection.
They are visualized during meditative practice and are regarded as being inseparable from the mind of the meditator.

A yidam is not a God with a capitol G. Buddhist deities are beings who exist in a formless state of pure skandhas (aggregates) without the afflictions, obscurations and negativities of the three poisons which characterize the state of human beings’ skandhas.
Yidam are either realized beings who where once in human form, for example, Buddha Shakyamuni was Siddhartha Gotama before his enlightenment; some yidam are aspects of such beings visualized separately for purposes of practice.
We create this natural “harmonic” with a yidam to receive the blessing of the yidam, infusing and mingling our mind with the wisdom and compassion of the yidam; this is the enlightened, compassionate activity of the blessing itself.

 Ngak'chang Rinpoche in Bristol
In the Aro gTér lineage, all yidams are seen as manifestations of the Buddhas Yeshé Tsogyel and her consort Padmasambhava.
Not all yidams have had incarnation as people, but some people are considered manifestations of Yidams.
Sometimes the male yidams such as Padmasambhava carry a trident to portray their empty aspect rather than manifesting in sexual union, but whatever the form of the male yidam – emptiness always has to be portrayed in addition to his own appearance.

 Empowerment & Guru Yoga
The yidam is a manifestation of the Mind of the Lama.
Yidams are all different forms of the same thing, but as forms they connect to the different forms of deluded mind.
Since the aim of guru yoga is to unify oneself with the guru visualised as the yidam, and the aim of self-arising is to unify oneself with the yidam (who is actually the guru in disguise)—isn’t this distinction rather subtle?

Tibet Information Network - Obituary of Tibetan writer Yidam Tsering
Yidam Tsering is reported to have expressed his deep regret at not being able to write in Tibetan but many of his readers have commented on the significance of how his writing introduced Tibetan culture and history to a large Chinese readership.
Yidam Tsering only wrote in Chinese but his work was translated into Tibetan and was widely read.
It was in this period that Yidam Tsering became increasingly concerned with the development of Tibet and Tibetan educational improvement.

Yidam are deities, beings who have accomplished the indestructible nature of all the buddhas.
It is also a practice beyond conceptual mind in which the guru or yidam’s blessings and compassionate activity enters and transforms our minds.
Vajrasattva and the Buddha are such beings and we can still, to this day, draw upon their wisdom and compassionate energy in this manner.

Paradigm Shift - Change of Beliefs
One of the first things he found was that the Yidam had a fearful, almost demonic aspect - something not uncommon in Tibetan deities.
Being able to see the Yidam was a great thing, but a teaching deity was useless if you couldn't hear what it wished to say to you.
He had to do only one more thing, and that was to persuade the Yidam to leave the magic circle of the kylkhor.

 Buddhist Deities
Chakrasamvara is regarded as the most important Yidam or meditational deity of Vajrayana Buddhism, the highest Tantric yidam.
Chakrasamvara is the primary Yidam of the Kagyu tradition that finds its origin in the meditation of the 84 Mahasiddhis of India.
When a Tibetan monk or nun is initiated into a Vajrayana lineage, he or she is often given a Yidam who serves as a spiritual guide, protector, and a focus of meditation.

The Correct Attitude of a Vajrayana Practitioner by HH Shamarpa Rinpoche
Certain people think that yidam practice is to invite the deity to come forth or to enter their bodies.
The deity or yidam can manifest in the form of Sambhogakaya or Nirmanakaya.
When you are doing the yidam practice, do not think that you are inviting the deity to you.

 Whispers 2
The fact that all the yidams are emanated by Buddha Shakyamuni does not mean they are all identical.
Through the practice of this same yidam path, those of mediocre or average capacities and moderate merit accumulations may attain complete liberation at the time of death, or in the period after death.
Acknowledging varying types of sentient discrimination the Buddha Shakyamuni emanated myriad yidam deities.

 Vajrayana Meditation
A Samayasattva (in Tibetan literally 'oath-bound' natural holiness) or Yidam is that anthropomorphic form of Buddha or Bodhisattva on which the meditator regularly practices over a long period of time until he realizes unity with that wisdom form.
When the Yidam is a Nirmanakaya form such as Sakyamuni, then the gates stand for the Four Noble Truths; when Avalokitesvara is the Yidam then their meaning is the Four Boundless Minds; and if the center of the mandala is occupied by a Yidam of Wisdom, as Manjusri, then the gates are the Four Mindfulness.
A person has only one yidam, either selected by himself or chosen by the guru, and to this yidam one is bound by an oath taken at the time of initiation.

The Yidam deity the obstreperous monk might have found in his terror and humiliation was surely disguised in his victimhood.
Clear mind sees the Yidam deity in the basest of human propensities and declares on the basis of its gnosis that everything is an opportunity for spiritual ascent.
But he says not, "I am God," but, "God is me" -- in the sense of the Yidam deity.

ORIENTALIA Forums Post 12112 Modern Tibetan Mahayana - Polytheism or NeoPaganism?
A yidam is a chosen Buddha or Bodhisattva used as a bridge-aid (i.e., instrumental means) to focus one's attention on the ultimate essence of awareness.
There is no school of Tibetan Buddhism that suggests a yidam is a god or separate entity or independent personality or existant isolate thing (dharma), the yidam just conceived as a thing for the conventional and skillful means in order to become awake.
Take the istadevata away, and you will destroy Mahayana, take the yidam away, and there will be no Tibetan Buddhism.

On the Meaning of Samaya by HH Shamarpa Rinpoche
The lama is considered as the centre or main yidam, deity of the mandala.
In order to overcome the habitual tendencies relating to the bindhu, the Vajrayana meditation involves generating the seed syllable of a yidam-deity from which the yidam then manifests.
The following concerns background explanation regarding the breaking of samaya by means of harming the vajra-master: With respect to Vajrayana practice, especially in the Annuttarayogatantra, the outer world including sentient beings is transformed into a pure aspect.

 Buddhist Problems Answered
If both the yidam and the deity to be visualized are in the same Buddha family, then they should be seen in the correct positions, as when Avalokitesvara or Amitabha are visualized on the head of Tara.
If she is one’s yidam, it is good for the First Initiation and she may again be worshipped in single form in the Fourth Initiation, but in the Third, the yidam must be in Heruka-form.
Once a peaceful or a wrathful form is chosen as the yidam, one must worship only that one as the yidam.

The goddess Tara, his yidam, then came to him in a dream and said that he was responsible for the expulsion of a sincere practitioner, and that as penance he should go to Tibet and teach.
Probably the most commonly used yidam is the 'god' or 'goddess' (terms used very loosely) of universal compassion, known as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, Chenrezig in Tibetan, and Kuan Yin in Chinese.
Generally used in these commentaries to refer to any kind of method used for ends of spiritual development.

Of the lower three yogas, Kriya Yoga is serving the Buddha, Carya Yoga is working for the Buddha, and Yogic Yoga is to practice visualizations on your own body not only on Buddha outside your body.
Before the first of the four Great Initiations, which is the Yidam Initiation, you must practice the lower three yogas and along with this the bubble visualization where inside all is empty and everything outside is a reflection.
The Buddha body is inside as a bubble, as Sunyata; outside are the Buddha’s five colors and six ornaments; or you can meditate on some yidam, whatever it looks like according to its ritual.

Antidotes to not understanding how to achieve enlightenment: Vajrayana Practices
Through the empowerment of the yidam deities, we identify and become one with the yidam itself so that the ordinary vision of the mind is purified.
The yidam is the individual's special deity or guide, inseparable from himself, and taking him to Enlightenment.

KTD--Comments on the Practice of the Chenrezig Sadhana--
Practices such as the Chenrezig and Tara sadhanas can be approached by someone leading an ordinary life, and the Chenrezig meditation is uncommon both in the ease of its performance and the blessing that it bestows.
With faith, aspiration, and the proper attitude--with meditation on one hand and actual compassion on the other--transformation can actually occur.
If such a transformation into a worldly form is possible, then transformation into the form of Chenrezig is even easier, because the yidam exists as a yeshe sempa, which means wisdom being.

Sometimes the disciple goes further, into a sort of dark night of the soul, and confesses with anguish that although the Yidam is present, he no longer believes in it as an independent being.

Thus, while the woman in profane consciousness is dragged down through mutual "mob" participation to the brutal realm of her rapists' lust, Yeshe elevates them all through sublime mutual participation into the sphere of the Yidam deity.
By accepting both the lower form of lust and its higher divine meaning, she "accepts the situation and controls it." She turns her attention to the rising kundalini which begins in the lust and impotence of the navel chakra but finds its transcendent meaning in the opening of the crown chakra.
Looking inward to the surging reality of kundalini, she knows without doubt that the brutality of lust is a human fact that harbors the sublime reality of the Yidam deity of lust-consciousness whose higher meaning is Spontaneous Great Bliss.

In which case, all the devotion and romanticism of the troubadour are distinct advantages (feeding the system with its energy, as it were), rather than being counter-productive “interference” hindering the properly Buddhist task of recognizing anatman.
Neither myself nor the person I was discussing the issue with are experts on the subject, so I’d appreciate feedback from both experts and non-experts alike on the question of whether our idea of tantra is in any way appropriate to what it is and the way it is actually practiced.
(It is not clear to me whether this can be reversed — instead of appropriating one’s yidam into oneself allowing oneself to be apppropriated into the yidam instead, thus losing one’s personal consciousness in the enlightened consciousness of the yidam).

KTD--A Teaching on the Chenrezig Sadhana--
That is why we make the earnest request here to not just anybody but to Lama Chenrezig, lama meaning one who has superior realization, superior knowledge, who has overcome all defilements, and who is thus capable of helping those with defilements become free of them.
The nature of a yidam is such that, when the practitioner's mind makes a connection with it, he or she can rely on that connection, and the yidam can provide the necessary benefit for which the connection is made.
Since Chenrezig is the embodiment of so many noble qualities, the qualities of a lama, the qualities of a yidam, the qualities of the perfectly noble one among realized beings, then Chenrezig is the lord of protection, or KYAP GON CHENREZIG.
