Yahrzeit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The date of the Yahrzeit is determined by the Hebrew calendar, and falls annually on the Hebrew date of the deceased relative's death.
Talmud or a volume of the Mishnah on the day prior to the Yahrzeit, in the honor of the deceased.
(During the morning prayer service the mourner's Kaddish is recited at least four times.) Mourners also light a special candle which burns for 24 hours, called a " Yahrzeit candle".

 Yahrzeit Reminder - MemoryFlame.com
The date of the Yahrzeit, which is calculated according to the Hebrew calendar, is the anniversary of the death, not the burial.
This prayer is recited at Minyan, a worship service that has a quorum of 10 worshippers present, the eve, morning and afternoon of the Yahrzeit.
The main expression of the Yahrzeit is reciting the Mourner's Kaddish prayer.

 MyJewishLearning.com - Lifecycle: Yahrzeit
The yahrzeit is a time of remembering the dead by reciting the Kaddish, lighting a 24-hour candle, and remembering the person who has died.
A 24-hour candle is lit and, as one woman I know says: "The spirit of the dead person fills the room again for 24 hours." One attends synagogue for the evening, morning, and afternoon services and again recites the Kaddish [the memorial prayer].
The most significant of these is yahrzeit, the anniversary of the death, which is observed according to the Hebrew calendar.

In addition, I encourage you to recite whatever prayer is in your heart; the prayers of the heart are especially precious to God.
Hence, there are four times a year one lights a yahrzeit candle, in addition to the yahrzeit date itself: Yom Kippur and the three pilgrimage festivals (Pesach, Shavuot, and Sukkot).
There are no prescribed prayers to recite when one lights a yahrzeit candle.

 HMP: Yahrzeit
Although there are no standard prayers to commemorate a yahrzeit, many people recite some of the psalms that relate to the funeral service or other prayers or readings that seem appropriate.
Traditionally, a yahrzeit candle is lit at sunset the night before the yahrzeit date, and kept lit throughout the following day until it burns itself out.
For those who attend synagogue services on Shabbat, Kaddish is recited on the Shabbat before the yahrzeit at synagogue when mourners rise to say Mourner's Kaddish.

The Talmud does not mention yahrzeit per se, except for a reference that it was customary to fast on the anniversary of the date of the death of a parent.
But if you will neglect My candle, then your candle will also flicker out." By lighting a candle on the yahrzeit day of a dear deceased relative we proclaim our faith in the covenant that these two verses imply.
This is in accordance with the understanding that the leader of the services has a special merit in so doing, since he "causes" the congregation to bless God's name.

 Five Years Later: Yahrzeit
This is important for two reasons – first, the presence of a minyan (quorum of ten men) allows us to say Kaddish, the prayer sanctifying God’s name that is recited by Jewish mourners at the funeral, during the mourning period following the death, and on the yahrzeit of a close relative.
On the one hand, it's important to Don and me to hold the traditional ceremony by her graveside, as we have for the past three years.
The ceremony is public, and announced to our religious community, friends and extended family.

 Essays: Yahrzeit
Her yahrzeit is the 22nd of Shevat which alludes to the 22 letters of the Alef-Beis through which the world was created and through which the G-dly life-force infuses the material world.
A Yahrzeit is commemorated through the recitation of Kaddish by members of the family, as well as by leading the communal prayers in the role of Shaliach Tzibur.
There are, however deeper aspects in the meaning of yahrzeit which sometimes come to the fore, based on the confluence of certain dates, people and Torah thoughts which reveal to us a more profound meaning in our material life and in the eternal life of the Jewish soul.

Yizkor/ritual - online Yahrzeit and memorial website
In many synagogues a member who is due to observe a Yahrzeit for a relative will be called to the reading of the Torah on the Shabbat preceding the Yahrzeit date and/or on the day of the Yahrzeit, if it is a day on which the Torah is read.
Being called to the Torah and reciting the prescribed blessings is regarded as a Mitzvah - a meritorious act - and brings honour to the memory of the deceased relative.
In some synagogues, to mark the impending Yahrzeit, the Reader (Chazan) will recite the Memorial Prayer.

If the deceased passed away in a year when there was only one Adar, then according to Rabbi Yosef Karo (O.C 568:7), the observance should take place in Adar Sheni.
However, if there is a regular mourner, the one who has yahrzeit has the power to override the mourner only once.
Rabbi Moshe Isserles, on the other hand, says that it should be observed in Adar Rishon (ibid).
