Lent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eastern Christianity calls this period Great Lent, to distinguish it from the Winter Lent or Advent that precedes Christmas (though in Greek, the two periods are the "Great Fast" and the "Nativity Fast").
In Western Christianity, Lent is the period before the Christian holy day of Easter.
Whereas Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death on the Cross, Lent is concerned with preparation for Holy Week (also known as Passion Week), which recalls the events leading up to and including Jesus' crucifixion by Rome.

Advent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From the 6th century the season was kept as a period of fasting as strict as that of Lent (commencing in some localities on 11 November; this being the feast day of St.
With the view of directing the thoughts of Christians to the first coming of Christ as Saviour, and to his second coming as Judge, special lessons are prescribed for each of the four Sundays in Advent, which are traditionally celebrated with four candles, often on an Advent wreath, with one to be lit each Sunday.
In Eastern Orthodox churches - where it is also called the Nativity Fast, Winter Lent or the Christmas Lent - it lasts forty days, beginning on November 15, and in other churches from the Sunday nearest to St.

 redeemeronline Lenten Reflections
Lent, I believe, is the season of "grounding," for feeling the solid ground of a loving God, who accepts me as I am, and who, at the same time, calls me to even deeper faith.
We too might say, "Thank God it's Lent." The human experience is a rhythm of feasting and fasting, of times of plenty and times of want, of songs of joy and sounds of silence.
Some of us may be sufficiently self disciplined that we make time each day to be still and know that God is God.

Talk:Lent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since I initially wrote the Winter Lent article (at least I think I did), I learned that "Winter Lent" is actually a less common, informal name for the "Fast of the Nativity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ", also sometimes called "St. Philip's Fast" because it starts on Nov. 15, St. Philip's feast day.
The start and end dates of Lent are counted using a couple of different methods, which is explained in more detail later in the article.
Mardi Gras and other carnival celebrations have almost no legitimate (spiritual/religious) claim to an association with Lent, except for the fact that they present an opportunity for the faithful to celebrate excess before the start of the fasting season.

Unlike Lent, though, this was not a liturgical season -- that is, no changes were made in the liturgy to call all the faithful to do penance.
Martin's Lent was shortened to four weeks, ending with the feast of the "Christ Mass" (Christmas).
Among the liturgical reforms instituted by Gregory I in the 6th century was the standardization of Advent practices.

Lent is immediately preceded by a celebration that has no mention on the calendar of the church year.
Because church discipline forbade this kind of revelry during Lent, it was natural that it be substituted by a pre-lenten party-time.
As early as the 300s, it was adopted by local churches as part of their practice of temporarily excommunicating or expelling public sinners from the community.
