He focusses on the history and significance of those seven churches in Turkey; one of which, Ephesus, is supposedly the church where John, the apostle, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, worshipped at for the rest of their lives.
I was told by someone at my church that Barclay doesn't believe in the virgin birth which is a fundamental tenet of Christianity.
What I like best about Barclay's commentary is his analysis of the first 3 chapters of Revelation which contain the seven letters of Christ to the churches.

The modernistic approach to the humanity of Jesus generally begins with an effort to create a Jesus who enters “absolutely and completely into the human situation.” Next, Jesus is described as being unsure and uncertain as to his identity and mission.
After affirming that Jesus doubted his own call from God, he weakly affirms that Jesus was somewhat sure -- enough to repel the satanic appeal.

Refutation, Rebuttal, Exposition and Explanation of Universalism
J.C. Ryle says, "Some theologians hold that, between His death and resurrection `He went and preached to the spirits in prison' (1 Peter 3:19) and proclaimed the accomplishment of His work of atonement." Although he himself considered this "doubtful," he says this view was held by Athanasius, Ambrose, Zwingle, Calvin, Erasmus, Calovius, and Alford.
It says, "The gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
