Western world - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the eastern and western churches spread their influence, the line between "East" and "West" can be described as moving, but generally followed a cultural divide that was defined by the existence of the Byzantine empire and the fluctuating power and influence of the church in Rome.
The term Western is usually associated with the cultural tradition that traces its origins to Greek thought and Christian religion.
These two divisions of the Eastern and Western Empires were reflected in the administration of the Christian Church, with Rome and Constantinople debating and arguing over whether either city was the capital of Christianity (see Great Schism).

In this final chapter of MacDonald's trilogy on Jewish evolutionary strategies, he outlines how Jews and Gentiles are ...
Multicultural societies with their consequent fragmentation and chronic ethnic tension are unlikely to meet Jewish needs in the long run even if they do ultimately subvert the demographic and cultural dominance of the peoples of European origin in lands where they have been dominant.
Indeed, one might note that, while the Western Enlightenment has presented Judaism with its greatest challenge in all of its long history, contemporary multiculturalism in the context of high levels of immigration of peoples of all racial and ethnic groups presents the greatest challenge to Western universalism in its history.
From the standpoint of these leftist critics, the Western ideal of hierarchic harmony and assimilation is perceived as an irrational, romantic, and mystical ideal.

 Crimes of Honor and Shame
In most traditional societies, a wife's adultery and a daughter's, sister's or other female family member's premarital sexual activity are viewed as the most serious violations of codes of male and family honor.
In a study of Arab Muslim society, those who punish a woman are most often brothers, followed by fathers, and then the fathers' brothers and their sons.
In traditional societies crimes of honor were accepted and justified by communities; they were viewed as a needed aspect of the honor culture.

Cultural Confrontation and Compromise: The Response of Non-Western Societies to Western Political Ideas - Ho-Ill Lee
It is designed to account mainly for non-Western societies' responses to Western political ideas and religions.
The reductionist studies deal with power relations between Western and non-Western cultures, and put forward a convincing account of the reason why the former came to dominate the latter.
In the analysis that follows, the term text or message conveyed by other societies refers primarily to foreign political ideas and religions.

Family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Moreover, some societies do not lump together relatives that the West classifies together (in other words, in some languages there is no word for cousin because mother's sister's children and father's sister's children are referred to in different terms).
For example, most kinship terminologies distinguish between sexes (this is the difference between a brother and a sister) and between generation (this is the difference between a child and a parent).
For example, in some societies there are many different people that one would call "mother" (the woman of whom one was born, as well as her sister and husband's sister, and also one's father's sister).

contributes to certain commonalities in gender relations across Muslim societies, notably the privileging and empowerment of men over women within the context of the family, it is important to note significant variations as well.
State power is deployed to regulate gender and family relations, as well as the role of religion in society.
Thus, gender inequality is acknowledged, and justified in religious terms on the grounds that God made men and women “essentially different”; that these differences contribute to different familial roles, rights and duties, which are complimentary; and that this complimentarity is crucial to the cohesion and stability of the family and society.

Rockefeller Brothers Fund Programs: Peace and Security
The need for greater respect and understanding between Muslim and Western societies: Today’s severely strained relationship between the Islamic world and the West poses a threat to national, regional, and global security.
GOAL: The RBF seeks to reduce the divisive and destabilizing tensions that exist between much of the Islamic world and the West, particularly the United States, and to increase the potential for collaboration among Muslim and Western societies on behalf of a better, safer world through the following strategies:
Note: Because of the exploratory nature of this strategy, the Fund will be pursuing it primarily through solicited proposals.

West Is As West Does - Global Policy Forum - WTC: The Crisis
Where were Western values when millions of people in the non-Western world were killed and tortured by Western-government-sponsored butchers and villains such as the Shah of Iran, Indonesia's Suharto or Zaire's Mobutu?
they're "Western" too -- the manifold White supremacists, Paki-bashers and Neo-Nazi skinheads who, indeed, have been prophetic in their warnings of the dire threat the non-Western world poses to the West.
Define "Western." It is not race, God forbid, though there are still a great many people in "Western societies" -- not least in Mr Berlusconi's government -- who would argue otherwise.

Civilization and Women's Position in Societies
In the holy bible, you can easily find that kind of teachings which ask women to sacrifice for men, to obey, and to be good servants of men.
This dependency of women on men and the role of women as sexual tools can be found anywhere in the world, in any societies and in any culture.
After the women's libration movement, western's women's status has been changed a lot, and people started treating women better.

Alexander Deane arges that Western societies take democracy for granted. - On Line Opinion - 21/2/2005
In these elections, dissident voices that were once repressed were at last heard.
So when considering the American-led spread of democracy, you should ask yourself this: Would you prefer it if the elections had not happened?
And, in their millions, women were emancipated in societies that had previously denied them basic rights.

 CJ - Politics
In her introduction, Christine Fauré posits that sufficient interdisciplinary information exists on the history of women in the west to make possible an encyclopedic assessment of women's role(s) in the significant events of western history.
While these essays make an important contribution to the study of women in western societies, the collection does not yet allow us to speak of a "history of women," much less an encyclopedia.
But, because the essays deal with events and concepts in very disparate societies, it is difficult to deduce patterns of behavior or mindsets characteristic of women in the countries studied.

Just as much as the material world and free intelligence were mysteries for traditional societies.
The broad use of the word love, and the narrow meaning of the word shame may be central to this end.
In small traditional societies, such as the Maori in New Zealand, the emotional/relational world (the E/RW) was at least as important as any other (Metge 1986).

Nigel Parton - The challenge of child abuse in late modern societies
The Centre for Applied Childhood Studies at the University of Huddersfield is a multi-disciplinary research centre, which is involved in a number of child-related projects and has been in existence for just over ten years.
In the context of these important changes in social and cultural experiences, it will be argued that concerns about the child, and in particular childhood vulnerabilities, have taken on an increased significance and therefore pose major problems for those who have devolved to them the responsibility for trying to do something about it.
The central argument of this paper will be that it is important to locate these developments in the context of important social changes being experienced by all late modern Western societies.

Male Body Images Suffer in Western Societies
31, 2005 -- Western men have a much more distorted view of their own bodies than men in Taiwan, according to a new study.
This condition is growing in prevalence and severity, say the researchers.
Researchers say the findings suggest that there's an East-West divide in terms of male body image, which may explain why body image disorders, such as muscle dysmorphia, and anabolic steroid use are major problems in western societies yet rarely seen in Asia.

IslamMessage -> Women In Immoral Western Societies
There are various solutions, some might suggest celibacy, others would prefer female infanticide (which does happen in some societies in the world today!).
The point that is often misunderstood in the West is that women in other cultures don't necessarily look at polygamy as a sign of women's degradation.
What should a society do towards such unbalanced sex ratios?

Term Paper on Christian Morality in Western Societies.
I attribute the difficulty of upholding Christian morality in western society to the fact that we are human beings with natural instincts that are hard for us to control.
It is hard to live in western society without a good foundation and solid fellowship and communion with other Christians.
Everywhere you turn there is some type of vulgarity and the things/activities that are getting the most attention are non Christian type activities.

 Avant-garde / Modernism / Postmodernism
For, under the terms of this argument, the supposed 'autonomy' of art within bourgeois society, as a privileged realm of free play, is in fact in the service of that selfsame bourgeois, capitalist system, providing it with a safety-valve, a neutralized, institutionalized space in which it is possible to believe that one is free.
Even radical Western theorists of postmodernity, she argues, fail to unpick this new "master narrative" which provides an unexamined frame through which all culture, Western or otherwise, is reduced to the non-dynamics of the Same.

Rockefeller Brothers Fund Programs: Democratic Practice
Global governance is the attempt to bring standards and regulations to issues that transcend the authority of individual nations, such as the rules that shape and govern the many dimensions of globalization.
Paradoxically, while there has been a dramatic increase over the past two decades in the number of countries with democratic systems of government and additional countries are on the democratic path, the frequent failure of new and established democracies alike to deliver on democracy's promises has undermined commitment to democratic practices around the world.
The Fund is particularly interested to ensure that voices representing developing countries can make themselves heard in these fora.
