Western world - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the eastern and western churches spread their influence, the line between "East" and "West" can be described as moving, but generally followed a cultural divide that was defined by the existence of the Byzantine empire and the fluctuating power and influence of the church in Rome.
The term Western is usually associated with the cultural tradition that traces its origins to Greek thought and Christian religion.
These two divisions of the Eastern and Western Empires were reflected in the administration of the Christian Church, with Rome and Constantinople debating and arguing over whether either city was the capital of Christianity (see Great Schism).

The Ayn Rand Institute: The Greatness of Western Civilization
Its core principles are under attack from every direction--by religious fanatics, by dictators and, most disgracefully, by Western intellectuals, who are denouncing reason in the name of skepticism, rights in the name of special entitlements, and progress in the name of environmentalism.
They assert that to deny the equality of all cultures is to be guilty of the most heinous of intellectual sins: "ethnocentrism." This is to flout the sacred principle of cultural relativism.
The Greeks were the first to identify philosophically that knowledge is gained through reason and logic as opposed to mysticism (faith, revelation, dogma).

He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture, and shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian theology."  Western Civilization's Burden
…The lesson of history is that to the degree people and civilizations have operated in harmony with correct principles, they have prospered.
Kipling himself recognized that "White" is not a race, but rather a set of attitudes, values, and beliefs.
He made expressly sure that he was not going to lead any undisciplined hordes against Rome's mighty legions.

Minoan civilization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some archeologists believe the Minoans may have lost their religious faith in the ability of the priests to control nature, possibly leading to the fall of Minoan civilization.
The beginning of the Bronze Age, around 3100 BC, was a period of great unrest in Crete, but it also marks the beginning of Crete as an important center of civilization.
The Minoans were a pre-Hellenic Bronze Age civilization in Crete in the Aegean Sea, prior to Helladic or Mycenaean culture (i.e.

Intercollegiate Studies Institute - Programs - Western Civilization Fellowship
The Western Tradition constitutes a fragile achievement that liberal ironists ignore at their peril.
An enthusiasm for pedagogic multiculturalism has led the professoriate in search of wisdom seemingly everywhere except in their own Western Tradition.
Early in this century, Jose Ortega y Gassett observed that the mere preservation of a high culture requires the deployment of "incalculably subtle powers." Still greater effort and imagination seem called for today, when the academic guardians of culture have committed themselves to questionable theories that deny the very possibility of knowledge.
