In the early 4th century, the Roman Emperor Constantine regulated the use of the week due to a problem of the myriad uses of various days for religious observance, and established Sunday as the day for religious observance and rest for all groups, not just those Christians and others who were already observing Sunday.
The biblical creation also includes a seven-day week; according to which God laboured for six days and rested on the seventh, and the Ten Commandments which contained God's instruction to observe the week.
Hindu civilization is known to have had the concept of seven day week with instances in the Ramayana, a sacred epic written in Sanskrit about 300 BC, in which there is a mention of Bhanu-vaar meaning Sunday, Soma-vaar meaning Moon-day and so forth.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Holy Week
Holy Week is the week which precedes the great festival of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday, and which consequently is used to commemorate the Passion of Christ, and the event which immediately led up to it.
From an attentive study of the Gospels, and particularly that of St. John, it might easily be inferred that already in Apostolic times a certain emphasis was laid upon the memory of the last week of Jesus Christ's mortal life.
In the first of his festal letters, written in 329, St. Athanasius of Alexandria speaks of the severe fast maintained during "those six holy and great days [preceding Easter Sunday] which are the symbol of the creation of the world".

The week is known thus because of the propensity for college and university students to save exam study until the last possible week, and because term papers are often due.
During this period some students will suffer from sleep deprivation, increased irritability, and stress.
