Weak atheism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Weak atheism contrasts with strong atheism, which is the belief that no deities exist, and theism, which asserts that there is at least one deity.
Weak atheism (also called negative atheism) is the lack of belief in the existence of deities, without a commitment to the necessary non-existence of deities.
The weak atheist generally gives a broad definition of atheism as a lack or absence of evidence justifying a belief in any deity, which defines atheism as a range of positions that entail non-belief, disbelief, doubt, or denial of theism.

Atheism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atheism, in its broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of gods.
Other criticisms of atheism are based on ideas that it leads to poor morals or ethics, that it is impossible for a person to truly have faith in nothing, or that lack of belief in a god is as much (or more) a leap of faith than belief in a god.
Agnostic atheism is typically contrasted with agnostic theism, the belief that deities exist even though it is impossible to know that deities exist, and with gnostic atheism, the belief that there is enough information to determine that deities do not exist.

 Atheism - Free Encyclopedia
Atheism is not synonymous with irreligion; the idea of an eternal non-created universe is an important concept held by some members of religions and philosophies such as Buddhism and Taoism.
The term atheism\ is formed of the Greek prefix a- (meaning "without" or "not") and the Greek-derived theism, meaning a belief in a god or gods.
Some distinguish between a narrow, strict category "strong atheism" (the explicit rejection of the existence of gods) and "weak atheism" (a lack of belief in gods but no explicit rejection).

 Atheism
Atheism, the denial of or lack of belief in the existence of a god or gods.
The term atheism comes from the Greek prefix a-, meaning "without," and the Greek word theos, meaning "deity." The denial of god's existence is also known as strong, or positive, atheism, whereas the lack of belief in god is known as negative, or weak, atheism.
Atheism is primarily a reaction to, or a rejection of, religious belief, and thus does not determine other philosophical beliefs.

 The weak and the strong
Some people think that atheism is a rejection of gods (or even their particular god), some others that atheism is a form of belief.
In fact, atheism is commonly defined as disbelief in the existence of gods.
Weak-atheism is disbelief in gods, but strong-atheism adds something more : it is also a belief that gods do not exist.

'Weak' And 'Strong' As Philosophical Terms James Spairana (Reply) (3-01)
Therefore, "strong" atheism is the belief that the statements "A deity exists" and "Deities exist" are false statements, while "weak" atheism is the simple absence of a god belief for whatever reason (including having never heard a god claim).
"Weak" atheism says that there are two types of people: those who have a god belief and those who do not.
So, an infant is a "weak" atheist, in that it does not have a god belief, but is not a strong atheist.

Basically atheism (a=lack of, theism=belief in gods) is only lack of belief in a god godess or gods.
Weak atheism is a negation: "I don't believe that it is true that god exists"
Atheism deals with belief or rather lack of belief, while agnosticism concerns (lack of) knowledge.

A weak atheist does not make any claim concerning the existence of God; that is, he is not promoting any view or belief about God that needs to be defended.
There is also "weak" atheism (also known as "negative" or "implicit" atheism), which is defined as simply a "lack of belief" in God.

Strong atheism is the doctrine that there is no God or gods.
Strong Atheism is just as irrational as assured theism, and both beliefs are equally based on some sort of faith.
Both groups are Satanists and one doesn’t need to belong to either one to be more true but the main difference shows in debate and arguments.

Strong atheism, also known as hard or positive atheism, is a postive belief that no gods exist.
The majority of atheists in the world are weak atheists, although a significant portion of those are weak towards gods in general and strong towards specific gods.
Weak atheists put gods in the same class as Unicorns, Leprechauns, and the Great Beige Hroogledrorf from the planet Ixnay in the galaxy Drizzlefump: although not impossible, unsubstantiated and thus not believed in.

 Atheism - introduction
Some people think that atheism is a positive belief that god does not exist.
Also this argument can be reversed by saying that to claim that there is a god would require knowledge that there is nothing in the universe which prohibits the existence of gods, which would be impossible.
First of all, atheism in the broad sense is only disbelief, not belief.

Meditation 28 - On Weak Atheism
Another weak atheist wrote me stating that my definition of atheism was wrong because, as you cannot prove a negative, no-one would claim absolutely that gods do not exist.
We hold to the historic definition that atheism is a positive claim that god(s) do not exist.
And until very recently, this was the generally accepted definition of atheism, and it still is in the non-atheist community..

When challenged with the fact that many atheists (the majority in my experience) do not make the broad absolute claim that no gods exist (and certainly not unqualifiedly), he acknowledged (post #41) that he was operating under the (erroneous) assumption that strong atheism was the only atheism.
For purposes of debate and discussion, when we say atheism, we mean strong atheism.
Thus, when an argument AGAINST atheism is presented, it is always against strong atheism.
