Vespers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vespers is the evening prayer service in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox liturgies of the canonical hours.
In Unitarian Universalism, vespers often include congregational singing, readings, and a period of silent meditation, contemplation, or prayer.
The word comes from Latin vesper, meaning "evening." The term is also used in some Protestant denominations to describe evening services.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Vespers
The Vesper psalms, as well as the hymns and antiphons, are well calculated to edify the faithful.
On all feasts, of whatever rite, the second part of Vespers, that is, the capitulum, hymn, antiphon of the "Magnificat", is taken from the Sanctorale.
On feasts which are doubles of the second class and a fortiori of the first class, as well as on feasts of the Blessed Virgin, the Holy Angels, and Apostles, the psalms are proper to the feast as heretofore.

 Jazz Vespers
Vespers, originally begun at the rising of the evening star, are the Church's Evening Prayer, one of the two main hours of the daily Office.
A vestige of this remains in the monastic vespers; the Preces, which were the Frankish form of these prayers.
Vespers was also called the evening sacrifice, a counterpart of the sacrifice of incense offered every evening in the Temple at Jerusalem.

Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center Great Vespers
Vespers is a holy and prayerful way to start the day in the presence of the Lord, and Great Vespers is a beautiful and inspiring experience, truly completing the celebration of a feast or of the Lord's Day.
During the chanting of the Lamplighting Psalms (140, 141, 129, and 116) the priest or the deacon incenses the altar, the holy place, the iconostasis, and the whole church.
Great Vespers is the first prayer of the day.

Sicilian Vespers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The event is so named because the insurrection began at the start of the evening prayer service of vespers on Easter Monday (March 30, 1282) at the Church of the Holy Spirit just outside Palermo and eventually led to the massacre of thousands of Sicily's French inhabitants over the course of the next six weeks.
At that moment the chuch bell at the Holy Spirit and all the church bells in Palermo began to ring for Vespers.
Regarding the former, Michael VIII in his autobiography wrote: "Should I dare to claim, that I was God's instrument to bring freedom to the Sicilians, then I should only be stating the truth."

Vespers at Bethel: Worship, On the wings of a song and a prayer, Bethel Focus, Bethel College
For Young, the type of worship that springs from the chapel and Vespers services is both genuine and physical--even the worship leaders bow and pray during the singing, and it's not uncommon for those in the congregation to use the kneeling benches at the front.

 Vespers
Vespers, or Evensong, is the Church's evening prayer.
This gives Vespers a special connection with the holy Eucharist, and as a matter of fact, a great number of the Vesper psalms are Eucharistic songs or at least can easily be referred to the Eucharist.
At the very same time that Vespers is prayed, Christ was seated with his apostles in the upper room.

 Advent Vespers: Augsburg College
Advent Vespers celebrates the beginning of the Christmas season with traditional and contemporary hymns, anthems and carols.
Hendrickson says the Advent Vespers celebration is in "surround sound," because choirs will be situated in all the balconies of the church, giving a heavenly voice - and keeping the cameras busy.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Advent Vespers, which will focus on the theme "With Peaceful Wings" and will portray the majesty of the space at Central Lutheran Church.

 Christmas Vespers
This ceremony was broken into three parts like earlier ceremonies; however, rather than the Prophecy, the Birth, and the Adoration, this year the parts were the meaning of Christmas, sentimental notions of Christmas, and the religious aspect of Christmas.
The play was still based in Christianity and centered on the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ.
The ceremony consisted of a mixture of Yuletide carols and Bible readings, which were performed by the Special Chorus and Choir.

First Baptist Church of Ann Arbor - Vespers
From the beginning there were indications that the Vesper service was meeting the need of this unique little "congregation" for worship, prayer, fellowship, and spiritual care.
The service began just before the 5:30 meal, so it was called "Vespers" — to correspond to the ancient Christian practice of early evening prayer within the cycle of the Divine Hours.
The Vespers program has welcomed all who would come.

DU - Another Year for Christmas Vespers
The Vespers service follows the format of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a festival originating from an Order created by E.W. Benson, an Archbishop of Canterbury.
Christmas Vespers has been an important tradition to both the Drury and Springfield communities for many years.
“Christmas Vespers is the most important time of worship for the Drury community every year,” Browning says.

Global Catholic News - John Paul II Starts Catecheses on Liturgy of Vespers
His new cycle of catecheses, to be given at the midweek general audiences, focuses on the liturgy of vespers, the evening prayer prayed by millions of lay and consecrated people throughout the world.
VATICAN CITY, OCT. 8, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II pointed to the importance of vespers as a time of thanksgiving to God and a chance to ask for forgiveness, as he began catecheses on evening prayer.
These papal commentaries imply a new stage in the wake of the series of meditations on the liturgy of lauds, the morning prayer that features passages from the Psalms and canticles of the Old Testament, which the Holy Father had offered since March 28, 2001.

Vespers of Passion Sunday & Passion Sunday
At the Vespers Mass on Holy Saturday, Lent ends and Easter begins: the statues are unveiled at that time in one of the most glorious liturgical moments of the entire Church year, a moment that affirms His divinity and proclaims that "He is risen!"
Today, statues and sacred Images (except for the Stations of the Cross) are veiled with purple cloth beginning at the Vespers of Passion Sunday, and they remain covered until the Gloria of Holy Saturday, at which point Lent ends and Eastertide begins.
The veiling also symbolizes the fact that Christ's Divinity was hidden at the time of His Passion and death, the very essence of Passiontide.

When Are We to Fast: Midnight-to-Midnight, or Vespers-to-Vespers?
A liturgical "reminder" of this is the fact that, during the Great Fast, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is served; it is a Vespers service and during it the Holy Mysteries are imparted to the Faithful, who are therefore completely abstaining from food.
I am a simple soul and was simply keeping the day from the time I got up till I went to bed, then someone said that in the Orthodox Church the day begins at Vespers and so we should keep the fasts from evening (say 6 p.m) to evening.
This sounds odd and rather humorous, but it is an exact translation of the Greek and Slavonic words for the service and does indicate to us that the meal of that day properly comes after Vespers and before Compline.

Gilbert said that she first thought of the idea during winter quarter when she was discussing the need for an interactive worship option with one of her professors.
A new vespers option has been approved at Pacific Union College entitled Sunset Vespers, which offers an interactive environment centered around the discussion of religious topics and ideas.
The vespers meets every Friday just after sunset and is worth two worship credits.

Vespers always seemed to be a poem of a good little boys saying his prayers.
He admits that the boy in the poem was him at three, but refuses to accept that his thoughts ever wandered elsewhere while saying his prayers.
As he writes in his book 'The Enchanted Places', it bought him fist clenching, lip-biting embarrassment.

 Concerts>Vespers
He had a certain attachment for the fifth hymn which he reserved for his funeral; as for the ninth chant, he quoted from it in the finale of his last symphony in 1936.
It would not be until the end of the 19th century, under the guidance of Stepan Smolensky, that we would witness the renaissance of the ancient monodic style.
One can establish the genesis for Rachmaninoff's "Vespers" to the great religious services of his youth where he heard majestic choirs as well as to his admiration for the music of Tchaikovsky.

 Vespers
Not impossible, but highly unlikely, if the Vespers on the same day were to include the Magnificat.
I'm pretty sure that Vespers of this "kind" have been performed in live concerts, but I don't know any CD.
I was just speculating that the similarity between the Credo and the Magnificat (BWV 243) makes me wonder if they were performed on the same day, the Credo during the Mass in the morning and the Magnificat at Vespers in the afternoon.

God of Music - Vespers and Songs of the Monks of Mount St. Benedict
This has been constant until the present where the community comes together five times a day to sing the praises of God, to sanctify the day and keep in place the primacy of prayer in the monk’s life of ora et labora (prayer and work).
From the first days until the present the faithful have made their way up to the Mount each journeying with their own special purpose.
The vespers for the feast of St. Benedict, recorded for this CD, is a taste of the daily offering of prayer.
