Vedic religion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vedic religion gradually diversified into the 'Hindu' paths of Yoga and Vedanta, a religious path considering itself the 'essence' of the Vedas.
To the rishis, the hymns of the Rigveda and other Vedic hymns were divinely revealed and they were rather "hearers", of divine revelation.
The Vedic pantheon was interpreted as a unitary view of the universe with God seen as immanent and transcendent in the forms of Ishvara (God's Personal Feature), Paramatma (God's localised feature) and Brahman (God's Impersonal Energies).

“So studying religions in a modern-day "academic format" should ideally not be limited by absolute beliefs on the part of the scholar concerning such things as the "revealed truth" of certain traditions or scriptures; the "inerrancy" of a religious leader, preacher or guru; or the absolute supremacy of one tradition over another.
To my mind, if anybody were to "own" a religion, it would be the practitioners, the people who believe in it and live it, rather than the scholars who analyze it at a distance.
I was concerned, though, at the implication that the practitioners here have "hijacked" the study of their religion from academics.

Secular Humanism is one common example of a group of atheists who have a structured belief system---though the Secular Humanist doctrines are significantly more flexible than those of most theistic religions.

Instead, some atheists draw their sense of morality from other principles such as "do not harm others" or "the greatest good for the greatest number", from their own beliefs about the nature or purpose of life, or from their own personal standards and beliefs generally.

The religion of the Indo-Aryans was similar to that of the Greeks, in that they worshipped a variety of deities (called devas), the most powerful of whom (Indra) was a warlike male deity who established cosmic order by defeating demons of chaos.
Hymns to these gods make up a significant portion of the Samhita Veda, which is the first portion of the Hindu scriptures and is the oldest of the writings from India.
Most Western scholars now believe that the invading Indo-Aryans supplanted the Indus Valley civilization (which may have already been on the decline), and its ruling classes became the rulers of India over a period of time.
