Second Vatican Council - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some of the more conservative Catholics view the Second Vatican Council as an event that moved the Church away from its historical view of Scripture, devotion to Scholasticism, and firm ideas on the "Four Last Things" (Death, Judgement, Heaven, and Hell).
A major event of the final days of the council was the act of Pope Paul and Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras of a joint expression of regret for many of the past actions that had led up to the Great Schism between the western and eastern churches, expressed as the Catholic-Orthodox Joint declaration of 1965.
As a result, only deliberations on the role of the Papacy were completed, with examination of pastoral and dogmatic issues concerning the whole church left undone.

 Teachings
Vatican II Divinely sent to the nations of the world to be unto them "a universal sacrament of salvation," the Church, driven by the inner necessity of her own catholicity, and obeying the mandate of her Founder, strives ever to proclaim the Gospel to all men.
Vatican II in faithful obedience to tradition, the sacred Council declares that Holy Mother Church holds all lawfully recognized rites to be of equal right and dignity; that she wishes to preserve them in the future and to foster them in every way.
Vatican II The sacred synod has already shown in the constitution on the Church that the pursuit of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels draws its origin from the doctrine and example of the Divine Master and reveals itself as a splendid sign of the heavenly kingdom.

Press Release - Vatican II Documentary Film Features ADL Interfaith Affairs Director
Vatican II was the first ecumenical council to be held in 93 years and the only one in Church history to bring together all the world’s Roman Catholic bishops.
Facing the challenges of a new time, bishops convened for Vatican II to cover all the aspects of religious life from ritual to prayer, from theology to family life and focused on the meaning and future of the interfaith dialogue.
"Reflections on Vatican II is a unique contribution to a popular knowledge about the impact of Vatican II on religion in general and particularly the interreligious relationship," said Rabbi Klenicki, who also acted as a consultant for the film.

Principal Errors of Vatican II Ecclesiology
The new Vatican II definition is that the Mass is "a service and a collegial, ecumenical communion." A better definition could not be found for the new mass, which, like the new Vatican II Church, is a wide departure from the true Church's Tradition and Magisterium.
The Vatican II concept of the Church as "People of God" is false ecumenism.
The new concept of the Church as defined by John Paul II calls for a profound change in the principal act of the Church, which is the Sacrifice of the Mass.

 [No title]
Vatican II, therefore, as a pastoral council, has no dogmatic force and can be held to be imprudent or even in error, with no compromise to one's Catholic faith.
Today we hear ceaseless exhortations to the effect that we must all imbibe the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, that the entire life of the Church must be reordered in conformity with its decrees, that indeed all the Church's activity take place in light of the council.
Catholics are, therefore, within their rights to make reservations regarding any novelties emanating from Vatican II that are out of step with Sacred Tradition and the previous continuous Magisterium (official teaching) of the Church.

Vatican II: 40 years later: A Council Primer
(Vatican I, in contrast, had 737 bishops in attendance.) Depending on the session, the number of bishops was between 2,000 and 2,500.
When Pope John XXIII announced on Jan. 25, 1959, that he has going to convene a council of the entire church, he sent the majority of “the people in the pews” (and not a few priests and bishops as well) scurrying for their dictionaries and tomes of church history.
The Second Vatican Council was to launch a much-needed spiritual renewal and updating of the church’s practices.

 Vatican City (Holy See)
Vatican II, as it is called, revolutionized some of the church's practices.
The new accord affirmed the independence of Vatican City but ended a number of privileges that the Catholic Church had in Italy, including its status as the state religion.
He served as Pope John Paul II's closest associate and is expected to continue the policy of a “strong Rome.” The church's power will not become more decentralized but remain firmly in the hands of Rome.

Vatican II: 40 years later: Essay - The council we are still living
Some people, not all of them Catholic, think that the supreme task and glory of the Catholic church is to oppose the world, to throw up a bulwark of changelessness against the giddy whirl of modernity.
It gave one conservative bishop the power to veto the things Rome was worried about, an address to the problem of the shrinking priesthood by considering married and/or women priests.
Young Catholics are more than ever living in a Second Vatican Council church -- one that emphasizes the laity, individual conscience, ecumenism, social concern and community.

Astrology Software for Research -Vatican II - astrology chart
Italian Vatican II which may be considered the chart for the modern Catholic Church, the Catholic convocation that brought sweeping changes to the Roman Catholic religion including the saying of Mass in the vernacular, having priests face the congregants, increased authority for non-priests, and a general modernization of the practice of Catholicism.
Since the current scandal over sexual abuse, begun in January 2002 with the case of defrocked priest John Geoghan, reformers have gained strength for changes on a variety of fronts – from giving the laity more power to re-examine longstanding policies on celibacy and female priests.
In the 40 years since the Council, R.C. theologians have fiercely debated how the church should be run.

 Reconsidering Vatican II
A spirit of radical individualism and hatred for the way things had been swept through religious community after religious community, through colleges and universities, through the ranks of priests (and even some bishops, although the latter were more constrained by their close ties to Rome), and eventually through the educated laity.
In May 1964, in the middle of the Second Vatican Council, I published a book, The Open Church, an optimistic assessment of the changes in the Catholic Church that I believed the council would produce.
One way of putting this is that "nonhistorical orthodoxy" (the cult of an "eternal" Church) was driven out from the center of the Church, only to be replaced in not a few hearts by "neodoxy," the love of the newest trend.

The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council - Dedicated to "The Immaculate".
Until the Second Vatican Council, however, the custom had usually been restricted to the Mass for the ordination of a priest or the consecration of a bishop.
The Catholic Church reveres these Eastern Churches, which are "living witnesses to the tradition which has been handed down from the apostles through the Fathers." The whole Church of Christ is made up of a number of particular Churches or rites; many of these Eastern Churches are joined in full communion with the Apostolic See.
From the beginning, the Second Vatican Council has shown that the great majority of the bishops are concerned with the pastoral needs of the Church.

Religion, from Vatican II to the Hare Krishnas
In 1964, the Church study of the issue of the persecution of Jews culminated with the Church declaring that Jews were not to be considered guilty of having killed Jesus Christ.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Church was distressed over its decline in membership and the decline in men entering the priesthood.
Some within the Church rejected some of the "liberal changes" that had begun with Vatican II.

Seattle Catholic - The Vatican II Renewal: Myth or Reality
We also should take seriously the affirmation in the documents of Vatican II that the laity have a real role in the Church.
As Cardinal Ratzinger said in 1988: "The Second Vatican Council has not been treated as a part of the entire living Tradition of the Church, but as an end of Tradition, a new start from zero.
Attempts to portray it otherwise are revisionist history by those who want to justify or explain away the revolution in the Church since the Council.

A lecture exploring central issues in Jewish and Christian relations in our time and flowing from the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate:Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions.
The Council produced 16 documents some of which are described as the greatest expressions of Catholic social teaching in church history.
While the basic doctrines of the Church did not change with the Council, its influence and documents created more profound changes for the Catholic Church than occurred in the previous five hundred years.

 Vatican II and the Eucharist
The contents of this page will hopefully help you to use the Vatican II documents as a means of increasing faith and devotion to the Eucharist in your area.
At the same time, we must always refer back to the Council, which is a duty and a challenge for the Church and for the world.
Some members of the Church will claim that this council stated that the Eucharist is merely a symbol, thus denying the Real Presence.

 Revisiting Vatican II
Vatican II was the biggest thing to happen to the church in my lifetime.
It was a difficult adjustment, and I miss some of the pre-Vatican II church.
It’s time to stop reminiscing about Vatican II and focus on the issues facing today’s church.

The founding of the Vatican Museums can be traced back to 1503 when the newly-elected Pope, Julius II della Rovere, placed a statue of Apollo in the internal courtyard of the Belvedere Palace built by Innocent VIII; he brought the statue from the garden of his titular church of St. Peter in Chains.
The Christian Museum, comprising finds from the catacombs that could not be conserved in situ, was founded by Pius IX in 1854 in the Lateran Palace and was moved to the Vatican Museums by Pope John XXIII.
