Urim and Thummim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The last agreed-upon reference to Urim and Thummim in the Bible is in Ezra and Nehemiah when, as the Temple and its worship practices are being restored, those who cannot prove their lineage as priests are commanded to wait for a priest with Urim and Thummim to identify them.
The use of a Urim and Thummim in Mormonism relates to the function of a seer.
According to the Hebrew Bible, stones used for "an" Urim and Thummim were kept in the breastplate of Aaron, the brother of Moses.

Mention of the Urim and Thummim ceases early in the history of Israel, indicating that it was no longer in use at the rise of classical prophecy (8th Century BCE).
The Rabbis understood the Urim and Thummim to be part of the Breastplate of the High Priest and that its oracular function came from light shining through the twelve gemstones mounted on the breastplate.

Since the Urim and Thummim, in whatever way they functioned, were a physical means of revelation, it appears that God was taking his people away from the easy certainty inherent in a mechanical means of revelation to the more consistent use of prophecy and the Word alone.
The Urim and Thummim were used at critical moments in the history of God's people when special divine guidance was needed.

Joseph Smith Revelations - Review of H. Michael Marquardt's book studying Joseph Smith's original LDS revelations
So, by studying the original revelations we discover that "Urim and Thummim" is a later addition to the text whose retroactive insertion gives the appearance that Joseph used a biblical means to translate the Book of Mormon, and that this means was known since 1829, before the Mormon church was organized.
That "Urim and Thummim" was an addition to the text is evident since it was a development in early church history and culminated in its inclusion in the 1835 DandC.
The use of the Urim and Thummim in connection with translating the Book of Mormon became a fact by the end of 1834.
