Myth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the academic field of mythology, a myth is a story of supernatural events or heroism that is believed to be true by people who perceive religious or spiritual significance in it.
Because of this usage, many people take offense when the religious narratives they believe to be true are called myths (see Religion and mythology for more information).
The Myth of Sisyphus is an essay by Albert Camus.

David Archard, "Myths, Lies and Historical Truth"
Sum: academic attacks on particular myths will not bring them down, because belief in them is not dependent on strict standards of plausibility but rather the function they serve (compare religion and urban legends): e.g.
National myths are not things like the founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus (i.e., entirely fictional and connected to spiritual claims)
Affective: belief in the myths leads us to lead noble lives or have the right kind of attitudes to other beings.

 Fiction Down Under
The karakia (prayer, chant or hymn) at the beginning of the Prologue alludes to the Maori Creation myth, and connects the art of carving to other creations.
Maori culture is not monolingual and confined to rural marae, just as Pakeha culture is not monolingual and urban; many Maori identities are forged in the Pakeha-dominated worlds of commerce and government, most Maori do not speak the Maori language, and many Pakeha identities are lived in close relationship with Maori culture.
Instead, there is a broad overlapping of languages and cultures, and the reader of Potiki should realise that this novel represents aspects of Maori culture somewhere in the spectrum that runs from traditional classical Maoritanga to urban gang subculture.

The end of the Myth of Galileo Galilei supported by the progressivists by Atila S. Guimaraes@ TraditionInAction.org
Pope Urban VIII only broke his good relations with Galileo when the latter wrote the book Dialogo, or Massimi Sistemi, in which he tried to ridicule the Aristotelian-Thomist philosophy in dealing with the systems of Ptolemy and Copernicus.
Moreover, Pope Urban VIII was linked to Galileo by a personal friendship.
The initial favorable position of the Roman College to Galileo, the seriousness of its scholars, the confidence St. Robert Bellarmine placed in their opinion, and its specialized department of science do not present a picture of an institution opposed to the advancement of science, as presented by the revolutionary and progressivist myth.

The Urban Myth - Pope Urban VIII, that is!
"His Holiness, Pope Urban VIII stated: 'In cases which concern private revelations, it is better to believe than not to believe, for, if you believe, and it is proven true, you will be happy that you have believed, because our Holy Mother asked it.
If you believe, and it should be proven false, you will receive all blessings as if it had been true, because you believed it to be true.' (Pope Urban VIII, 1623-44)"

The "urban guerrilla" is based on a recognition of the facts instead of an apologia of the facts.

 The Myth of Matriarchal Prehistory
By “myth” Eller intends two slightly different meanings: myth as an unproven yet widely held belief, and myth as a formative belief system—notably, while the book is polemic, she is careful not to use “myth” in its most derogatory connotation (as false, an urban legend even).
To conclude, The Myth of Matriarchal Prehistory is a razor sharp and enlightening critique and polemic, and as such, it should be read by anyone confused by, interested in, or curious about the various gynocentrisms in vogue today.
The Myth of Matriarchal Prehistory is at its most lively in its polemical moments; a well-written polemic that pokes holes in an opponent’s argument is a joy to read.

In addressing the myth that growth is necessary to provide jobs for residents of the community, Fodor cites national research that found no statistical relationship between a city's growth rate and its unemployment rate across 25 of the nation's fastest and slowest growing cities.
Population growth is the underlying cause of these problems and others, including urban sprawl, growing energy consumption, social alienation, urban decay, lack of affordable housing, an increase in the number of people without healthcare insurance, and many more.
The first myth is that population growth provides new tax revenues that will decrease the burden on existing property owners.
