Udanavarga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Udanavarga is a Sanskrit Buddhist text which is similar to the Dhammapada, containing many of the same verses.
The Udanavarga has around nine hundred and fifty verses in thirty-three chapters, whereas the most common version of the Dhammapada, the Pali, has only four hundred and twenty-three verses.
The Tibetan Buddhist canon contains two recensions of it, which are traditionally said to have been compiled by Dharmatrata.

Buddha and the Path to Enlightenment: IV. The Dhammapada and the Udanavarga
Dharmatrata is traditionally credited with compiling the Tibetan Udanavarga, consisting of about three hundred and seventy-five verses from the Dhammapada and a considerable portion of the Udana.
Despite the destruction of most of the sacred texts belonging to groups and schools which did not survive into modern times, these varying recensions are sufficient to suggest that there may not have existed a single, original Dhammapada text.
The Dhammapada was well known in some Tibetan monasteries where Prakrit versions were discovered in the 1930s.

 BUDDHIST HYBRID SANSKRIT READER
Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit Reader is a collection of selection from the Mahavastu, Mahaparinirvana Sutra, Udanavarga and Lalitavistara, which have been edited according to the principles to be adopted for Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit.
The purpose behind this work is to facilitate the practical use of the author's Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit Grammar and Dictionary (2 Vols.) by scholars and students as well as teachers interested in the language.

 Dhammapada: A Translation
In addition, there are Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese versions of a text called the Udanavarga, which is known in at least four recensions, all of them containing many verses in common with the Dhammapada/Dharmapada (Dhp) texts.
To further complicate matters, there are Jain anthologies that contain verses clearly related to some of those found in these Buddhist anthologies as well.
In addition, I have consulted translations of the Udanavarga — again, complete and incomplete — by Sparham and Strong.

 [No title]
There is another work in Sanskrit called the Udanavarga, which also has a large number of verses in common with the Dhammapada, but again seems to be a completely independent compilation.
There is also a Dhammapada in the Gandhari language (edited and translated by Brough), but although it contains at least half of its verses in common with the Pali Dhammapada, the order and distribution make it fairly certain that there is no direct link between the two works.
