The Tripitaka or Pali Canon - ReligionFacts
The Tripitaka was handed down orally, then written down in the third century B.C.E. According to Buddhist tradition, the contents of the Tripitaka were determined at the First Buddhist Council, shortly after the Buddha's death.
As many as 500 of Buddha's disciples assembled, and at the direction of Mahakashypa, Buddha's successor, the teachings of the Buddha were recited in full.
The Tripitaka (Tipitaka in Pali) is the earliest collection of Buddhist teachings and the only text recognized as canonical by Theravada Buddhists.

In the Tripitaka, the recorded Teachings of the Lord Buddha, one finds two main focuses for the meaning of Sangha: the third part of the Threefold Refuge (in the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha) and the third factor of the to-be -worshipped Triple Gem (The Buddha, Dhamma and Savaka Sangha).
In the Canon, on every occasion that an inspired person took the Threefold Refuge as an expression of their faith, it was either in the Buddha, Dhamma and Bhikkhu Sangha, or in the Buddha, Dhamma and Bhikkhuni Sangha.
On odd occasions in the Tripitaka, 'Sangha' is used to denote a 'herd' of animals (Patika Sutta, Digha Nikaya) or 'flock" of birds (Jataka Nidana), but groups of lay disciples, both men and women, are always described as 'parisa', an assembly.

 Numata Center Tripitaka Translation Series
Eventually, the Buddhist teachings were codified into a canon known as the Tripitaka, literally, “three baskets,” because it was divided into three main categories: the Sutra, the sermons of the Buddha; the Vinaya, the precepts and rules of monastic discipline; and the Abhidharma, commentaries and explications of the teachings.
Over the centuries, as Buddhism spread from India throughout Asia, the Tripitaka was transmitted to Tibet, China, Korea, and Japan.
As Buddhism developed in each country where it took root, additional commentary texts and scriptures were added to the canon.

Tripitaka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chinese form of Tripitaka, "Sanzang", was sometimes used as an honorary title for a Buddhist monk who has mastered all the Tripitaka cannons, most notably in the case of the Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang, who was portrayed in the novel Journey to the West as "Tang Sanzang".
The Tripitaka writings, which were originally memorized and recited orally by disciples, fall into three general categories and the scrolls (originally written on palm leaves) were therefore kept in three baskets (tri-pitaka).
Due to the popularity of the novel, the term in "Sanzang" is often erroneously understood as a name of the monk Xuanzang.
