 CIAR Cosmology Report
Before that, the birth and development of the universe had played a key role in mythology, and in stories which attempted to account for man's place and importance in the world.
These are the questions the following report will answer.
Furthermore, the observational technology was sufficient to tell only the bare fact of the expansion of the universe.

 Cosmology
What is more, the sequence of recurrences will stretch into the infinite past and future.
Also, there may be gravitational interaction from other Worlds of the Many-Worlds.
The Inflationary Universe begins with an empty universe and a non-zero cosmological term, which is mathematically equivalent to a negative pressure, so the origin of the universe is a lot like the Bhuddist picture of the void torn apart by the Chinese hermit Ryu playing his iron flute in the reverse direction.

 The New Cosmology
For the most part, these issues went unnoticed, were ignored or were assumed to be solved by some yet-to-be-understood means.
Because no other mechanism resolves the problems of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology so well, cosmologists have been willing to believe in inflation even before any experimental evidence of it existed.

 What is Theoretical Cosmology?
Theoretical cosmologists study the evolution and composition of the universe as a system, constructing theories and confronting them with experiments and observations.
High redshift supernovae searches are being pursued by the supernova cosmology project and the high-z supernova search (the latter is the source of the figure at left).
Again, if their absolute luminosity is known, their distance from us can be deduced.

PhysicsWeb - Physics World - A quantum leap for cosmology (November 2001)
This idea has given rise to what are called "relational" approaches to quantum cosmology.
There should be one state for each way of dividing the universe into two regions, one containing the observer and the other containing what the observer sees.
Instead the universe continues back before the moment classical cosmology predicts that it began, to a phase where it was previously expanding.

 theor.astro.cos
The revelation of theoretical physics is that these effects, once one has some idea of their nature, can often be extracted ad hoc from the general dynamical equations.
This strength in considerable part reflects not only the University itself, but also its connections to Fermilab (30 miles west of Chicago), where strong groups in theoretical astrophysics and--most recently--experimental astrophysics have been established by University faculty.
The strength of the astronomy and astrophysics program at The University of Chicago has in fact been its distinguished tradition in establishing these links between theory and observations, from cosmology and particle astrophysics to stellar structure and evolution, and astrophysical fluid dynamics.

I believe that this approach holds the key to answering the most pressing questions in cosmology.
I am also working on a hydrodynamic code for cosmology which will enable us to follow the structure in the universe from early times until today.
I believe there are three ways theoretical cosmologists can help answer these and other questions in the general field of structure formation.

More specifically they range from structure formation, topological defects, topology of the Universe, cold dark matter, to more exotic scenarios such as the recent Brane Universe proposals and the theoretical and phenomenological aspects they induce.
The themes vary from theoretical aspects of string theory to more traditional seminars on observational cosmology.
The cosmology group in Orsay has wide research interests that aim to bring closer the theoretical realm of string theory to recent observational and theoretical progress in cosmology.

Theoretical High-Energy Particle Physics and Cosmology
There are several aspects of cosmology currently under study at Boston University, including inflation of the early universe, the mechanism for producing the baryon excess, nucleosynthesis, "dark" matter, and the formation of large scale structure in the universe.
The goal of particle physics is to understand the fundamental constituents of matter and their mutual interactions.
Many of the questions of current theoretical interest are beyond the energy reach of existing accelerators.
