Theologian, The Church Needs You - Francis Cardinal Arinze
The genuine theologian is marked by deep faith in God, in Jesus Christ the Son of God made man, and in the Church that Christ founded.
Above all, the theologian, apart from intellectual competence, should be in union with God, by prayer, by regular meditation and presence before the Eucharistic Christ, and by humility in being able to say sincerely at the end of all his studies and writings: "I am just a servant of God and of the Church.
The theologian should be a good member of the community of faith which is the Church.

Theology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Theology generally assumes the truth of at least some religious beliefs and is therefore often distinguished from the philosophy of religion, which does not presume the truth of any religious beliefs.
To the extent that theology relies upon the religious practitioners' own terms, it is likely to be explored by those who have some kind of commitment to those terms: i.e., by those who are either practitioners of the religion, or sympathisers.
Drawing on the work of the American theologian Hans Frei, we may describe the relationship between theology and the philosophy of religion in the following way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theology

 St. Gregory the Theologian
The Church refers to him in one of its prayers as the highest intellect, for delving into the deepest mysteries of the faith and being able to express her incomprehensible truths with a clear understanding and strict correctness.
With thy theologian's speech thou didst dispel the philosopher's cobwebs,/ O glorious Gregory;/ and thou dost adorn the robe of Orthodoxy woven for the Church from on high./ Wearing this, she cries out with us thy children:/ Rejoice, O Father, most excellent mind of theology.
Gregory the Theologian (326-389) was the son of Gregory and Nonna, a very pious woman.

Instruction on the Ecclesial Vocation of the Theologian
The theologian must discern in himself the origin of and motivation for his critical attitude and allow his gaze to be purified by faith.
The right conscience of the Catholic theologian presumes not only faith in the Word of God whose riches he must explore, but also love for the Church from whom he receives his mission, and respect for her divinely assisted Magisterium.
The theologian, to be faithful to his role of service to the truth, must take into account the proper mission of the Magisterium and collaborate with it.

 Was G.K. Chesterton a Theologian?
A true theologian, for Balthasar, is one who perceives and helps to reveal the glory of God revealed in Christ.
The true theologian is caught up in the life of God; theology or "theo-logic", the logic of God, is something higher than human reason: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts: nor your ways my ways, says the Lord" (Is. 55:8-9).
He was a theologian whose thought unfolded the supreme and simple truth that the creation springs from nowhere but the love of the triune God.

 Pastor Paul T. McCain
Cyberbrethren: "I'm not really into theology" or "I'm no theologian, but..."
Theologians are men who rightly divide God's Word, properly and carefully and faitfully distinguishing Law and Gospel, faitfully preaching and teaching that Word and fulfill the duties of their office as pastor, caring for the souls entrusted to their care with the Word of God.
The best theologian/pastors are men who can preach clearly and simply so that the most unlearned layman in the church can understand what they are talking about.
But pick up most any academic theological journal and ask yourself, "What in here is really going to serve the teaching of the Gospel?" Sadly a lot of academic theology today is just playing to the guild of scholars.

 Van Til the Theologian
Van Til, "Bavinck the Theologian," 10; Apologetics, 2; The Defense of the Faith, 24; cf.
Louis Berkhof and others fail to include the doctrine of Scripture in their major dogmatic works, relegating that doctrine to supplementary or "introductory" volumes, since they feel, apparently, that the doctrine of Scripture belongs to "prolegomena" and not to theology.
Whatever may be said on behalf of this procedure, a "Van Tillian theologian" will wish to guard strongly against any implication that "prolegomena" is some kind of autonomous rational activity which precedes the believer's submission of his mind to God's Word.

 The Role of the Theologian
Thus the theologian must be a guardian of true religion and not let it become complacent.
The important role of the theologian is to challenge others to live their faith authentically.
This criticism is aimed at those who take the articles of faith and develop them rational within their minds instead of seeing how they should be lived out in the current age.

Catholic World News : Vatican Excommunicates Renegade Sri Lankan Theologian
After a call by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) for Father Balasuriya to recant his positions, he refused and continued to teach his doctrines.
VATICAN CITY (CWN) - A Sri Lankan theologian who has disputed fundamental doctrines of the Catholic faith was declared excommunicated by the Vatican on Saturday according to the rules of canon law.
The CDF then demanded that Father Balasuriya swear a special profession of faith which was a variation on oaths of fidelity to the Church's teaching and authority that many theologians have taken.

Pope Meets Dissident Theologian for Talks Europe Deutsche Welle
The two former university colleagues agreed not to discuss doctrinal questions, which put the Swiss theologian at odds with Church authorities, but focused rather on the question of the role of the church in a secular world.
The Swiss theologian had been accused of having "strayed from the truth of the Catholic faith."
A supporter of dialogue between religion and science and of a greater role for women within the Church, Küng was particularly critical of Pope Jean Paul II's pontificate, which he accused in 2003 of having "killed all life in the church."

Catholic Culture : Document Library : Notre Dame Theologian Counsels Theologians To Ignore Mandate
Most bishops, he said, will leave it up to the university to decide whether or not a professor should apply for the mandate, and most administrators will be unlikely to force the issue from fear of legal action or losing their reputation with the secular accreditation boards.
What is necessary, he wrote, is a new period of dialog between bishops and theologians; but not just any theologians: only those who receive the imprimatur from the Catholic Theological Society of America — an association of the most hard-core dissidents in the United States.
What about, the fate dissident theologian Charles Curran, a priest of the Diocese of Rochester, N.Y., suffered when the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ordered James Cardinal Hickey of Washington, D.C., chancellor of the Catholic University of America, to withdraw Curran's permission to teach theology at CUA?

Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center St. Gregory the Theologian, Patriarch of Constantinople
Gregory the Theologian, Patriarch of Constantinople, is one of the Three Great Ecumenical Doctors or Holy Heirarchs or Holy Bishops.
In 1100, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. John Chrysostom appeared to Patriarch John in a dream and asked him insititute one feast for all of them because they were equal before God.
Let us all come together to honor with hymn and song the three great satellites of the Holy Trinity, the Sun, enlightening the universe with the beams of their divine doctrine, flowing with honey-like rivers of wisdonm, refreshing deserts with streams of God-knowledge: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom, the famous preacher.

I am definitely having to look at spirituality in a whole new light and my faith is becoming more mystical.
I am guessing if you are reading this you came upon it accidentally or are one of the 3-5 people that actually checks it sporadically.

John Calvin The Theologian, by B. B. Warfield
In one word, he was distinctly a Biblical theologian, or, let us say it frankly, by way of eminence "the Biblical theologian of his age." Whither the Bible took him, thither he went:where scriptural declarations failed him, there he stopped short.
I am afraid I shall have to ask you at the outset to disabuse your minds of a very common impression, namely, that Calvin's chief characteristics as a theologian were on the one hand, audacity--perhaps I might even say effrontery--of speculation; and on the other hand, pitilessness of logical development, cold and heartless scholasticism.
And above everything else he deserves, therefore, the great name of the theologian of the Holy Spirit.

Later, the "theologian" claim came up again and Leif said, "I'll show you what I mean." He rented Parenthood, starring Martin, and that evening we watched it.
One couple refused to be defined by their sin and went for more life--that's a metaphor for salvation.
It's about four sets of parents who raise their children, but not very well.

Crosswalk.com - Theologian Says Methodists Will Not Go Way of Episcopalians
Despite the recent choice of the Episcopal Church USA, a United Methodist theologian says a self-declared homosexual will never be ordained a bishop in his denomination.
However, he feels they have not yet learned how to enforce them -- a reality evidenced by the fact that orthodox Methodist churches in Kansas, California, and Alaska have left the denomination after encountering false teachings in their conferences.
According to the theologian, members of his denomination are clear on its doctrine and policies.

Rings of Benzene: Me, a theologian?
While I might not become the world's next greatest theologian, studying the word of God is its own blessing.
Participating in a Bible quizing program called Bible Bowl, I knew more scriptures than my other church members, but not as much as a great theologian would need.
Now, I don't think it helped that I thought I knew everything that there was to know in the Bible.

 The Theologian's Nightmare
The eminent theologian Dr. Thaddeus dreamt that he died and pursued his course toward heaven.
"Oh," said the theologian, somewhat disconcerted, "my province was Sacred Knowledge, but the question that you are asking belongs to profane knowledge.
I thought perhaps you could enlighten it." "Well," said the librarian kindly to the theologian, "perhaps you can tall me where this place is that you call 'Earth.'" "Oh," said the theologian, "it's part of the Solar System." "And what is the Solar System?" asked the librarian.

Holy Fathers — St. Gregory the Theologian
Among his many works are orations on the subject of the Trinity, given in Constantinople, which won for him such acclaim that the Council of Ephesus later accorded him the rare title of "Theologian" (given only to two others in the history of the Church --the Apostle St. John, and St. Symeon the New Theologian).
But under St. Gregory, who was called to Constantinople in 379 by the Spanish Orthodox Emperor of the East, Theodosius, Orthodoxy began to revive and gain ascendency over the errors of Arianism.
His orations and writings are noted for the depth of their theological insight and a certain poetic soaring above the things of earth, as in this passage from his "Second Theological Oration":

Parker:THE TRANSIENT AND PERMANENT IN CHRISTIANITY
An idolatrous regard for the imperfect scripture of God's word, is the apple of Atalanta, which defeats theologians running for the hand of divine truth.
Men, who cry down the absurdities of Paganism in the worst spirit of the French "free- thinkers," call others infidels and atheists, who point out, though reverently, other absurdities which men have piled upon Christianity.

 theologian's argument for war
Send a note of encouragement to a priest
Brought to Rome by the U.S. State Department, Novak met privately Feb. 8 with Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran, the Vatican's equivalent of foreign minister, and officials of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and later detailed his Vatican presentation at a Feb. 10 Rome symposium organized by the U.S. Embassy to the Vatican.
As the Vatican continued to oppose military action in Iraq, U.S. theologian Michael Novak made a case for war to a skeptical Vatican audience in early February, arguing that military action was justified under traditional self-defense principles and not under some new concept of preventive war.
