Theodicy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While theodicy cannot prove the existence of God, it can make belief in God reasonable, by showing that the existence of God is not necessarily incompatible with the existence of evil.
Evolutionary theodicy, suggests that the plan that God has involves the elimination of all evil at the end of time, but that the means by which creation occurs always leads to the presence of evil in the interim.
This is in juxtaposition to theology, which attempts to explain the nature of God using supernatural revelation and faith.

 A Consideration Concerning Theodicy
Theodicy is possible only for a theology that is spiritualistic, and not naturalistic, for a theology, which will think about God not in an analogy with the objects of the natural world nor with the traits of the kingdom of Caesar, but in revelations of the spiritual world, of spiritual experience, of the spiritual pathway.
On the contrary, for spiritual theology and for its theodicy, Christianity reveals itself as a religion of tragedy.
Only in the union of the Divine nature and the human nature is there revealed the meaning of the world and the light that doth illumine life.

From this and many other examples of the argument for theodicy, we infer that traditional belief in divine theodicy entails three elements: (1) a judge, (2) survival of death, and (3) post-mortem retribution by God.
Therefore, both proponents of theodicy and its adversaries regularly cast their argument in terms of three interrelated items which they either affirm or deny: (1) God as judge, (2) human survival after death, and (3) post-mortem retribution.
By "theodicy" I mean the argument that God's providential relationship to the world entails a just judgment of mortals, especially a judgment which takes place after death where rewards and punishments are allotted.

On the one hand, it is by the faith of religion that God is affirmed to be perfectly good, despite the evil to be found in the world of His creation and governance.
And he is led to recognize that the observed facts of nature and history do not afford an unexceptionable argument for the goodness of God, and that after all the most solid ground of belief in the divine goodness lies in the needs and claims of the religious consciousness.
For as a rule the use of the term is more in keeping with its literal meaning, and theodicy is understood as the (or a) vindication of the divine providence or government in view of the existence of evil.

His theodicy, whilst affirming God& omnipotence, calls into question God& justice, suggesting that whether or not God is ultimately vindicated in light of the atrocity of the holocaust, will depend on what God does with the future.
And such a theodicy could be provided, he thought, by various kinds of communal artistic activity, most notably Greek tragedy and its modern equivalent Wagnerian music-drama, which faciliate a mystical vision of the world as a primal, undifferentiated unity.
In broad outline, it will be argued that, due to revisions in his metaphysics and epistemology, Nietzsche's position on theodicy divides into an early and a later formulation, but that these positions are unified by their shared basis in his aestheticism.

The theodicy question should be a "lived question" - and the asking of the question in a nontheoretical way is a way of living in the world.

The former mount apologetic arguments against the position that belief in the existence of God is logically inconsistent with the existence of evil, while the latter provide positive arguments which seek to justify a God who creates a world with evil.
The traditional theodicies of Christian orthodoxy, developed by Augustine, Aquinas, the Reformers, and Leibniz, all posit a static and unchanging world that God brought into being at some specific moment.
Such theodicies are strangely out of sync, at once affirming but yet ignoring a universe in process.

While I'd not heard the term theodicy before this (or at least didn't remember hearing it), the question has come up on occasion over the years, often during conversations when people have expressed surprise that a black-wearing, industrial-music-listening, goth-culture-loving, (ex-)drug-using, GLBT-supporting, open-minded person such as myself would still count their base beliefs as Christian.
Kirsten, I’m not precisely a Scripture quoter either, but I found the passage you were referring to: Matthew 5:45.
To me, I’ve most of the time solved theodicy for myself by saying that humanity’s free will negates God& omnipotence and omniscience, but it’s not a pleasant thought.

There have even been those who have argued that a theodicy that inculpates God cannot, by definition, be called a theodicy; that is, that a theodicy that does not justify God, is not a theodicy.
In the matter of theodicy, this means that a good argument does not deny reality as it can be -- evil; nor does it deny the basic structure of the religious world -- a good God; and, it does not leave one unduly torn by contradiction and incoherence.

Hick refers to this Augustinian Theodicy as the “majority report.” However, Hick believes that the Irenean tradition is more plausible.

A Theodicy of Protest: This position is one that complains to God, objecting that God could have and on the surface should have intervened in any number of horrific circumstances.
The divine hiddenness of God (deus absconditus) is sometimes considered a subset of theodicy because the way God responds or his refusal to respond is often felt to be part of the problem for atheists and agnostics (as well as theists at times).
Each of these problems could be said to have dual audiences—the various atheists who question the existence of God on their basis, and those believers who because of their belief wish to answer these questions as well.

The Irenaean theodicy, named after the Church Father and recently popularized by John Hick, sees our world as an arena of "soul making," that is, a place where free but immature creatures can grow up into moral and spiritual maturity.
Nonetheless, Stackhouse says, if God calls us to trust Him, and such trust is not to be a matter of blind or arbitrary faith, it is necessary that God provide us "with some other intellectually satisfying grounds." This leads Stackhouse to a broad- ranging discussion of "sufficient warrant" for Christian belief.
For if God is both omnipotent and perfectly benevolent, then it seems He both could and would eliminate evil.
