The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
It is a deeply spiritual examination of Christ the man and Christ the Son of God and the transition from one to the other.
The film, after all, explores the relationship between the human and finite with the divine and infinite with a passion present in all aspects of it.
It is the exact opposite of The Passion of the Christ and it should be celebrated.

Promise Keepers is the most notable conservative Christian group to recently come out and defend this interpretation of Christ, and an acceptance of The Last Temptation of Christ seems to be on the general move in many Christian communities and organizations.
Scorsese has been described as a lapsed Catholic; nevertheless, he maintains a traditionally Christian faith in Christ.
It has been the subject of a great deal of controversy due to its subject matter: it tells a version of the life of Jesus, told from his point of view.

 The Last Temptation Reconsidered
The Last Temptation of Christ is prefaced with his remarkable statement of spiritual and artistic purpose, an excerpt of which Scorsese uses to introduce the film, and and some of which appears in a fuller context in Kazantzakis' spiritual memoir, Report to Greco (1961).
It is the gradual assimilation of Jesus the man into Jesus the Christ, i.e., the quenching of all earthly fears and longings in the movement toward union with God, that brings out the meaning of the Cross.
The Last Temptation of Christ almost led to Kazantzakis' excommunication from the Greek Orthodox Church.

Culture Shock: Flashpoints: Theater, Film, and Video: Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ
Before The Last Temptation of Christ is completed, Christian groups worldwide condemn it as blasphemous, although Christian theology teaches that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine, and that to say otherwise is heresy.
When Nikos Kazantzakis publishes The Last Temptation of Christ in 1955, the Catholic Church bans it and the Greek Orthodox Church excommunicates him.
Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ, which includes a section in which Christ envisions an ordinary life, including sex and marriage, was called blasphemous by some.

The story of The Last Temptation of Christ was expressly not based on the Gospels, but instead posed a what-if question.
That that mission is to die for no apparent reason can be seen as perverse, but it is certainly consistent with the character portrayed in the Gospels &; and therefore the fundamentalists who call it "an intentional attack on Christianity"* speak in voices tinged with hypocrisy.
The quality of the performances of Willem Dafoe as Jesus Christ, Harvey Keitel as Judas Iscariot, Barbara Hershey as Mary Magdalene, and (a curious choice) David Bowie as Pontius Pilate, are almost beside the point.

The Last Temptation of Christ. A Hollywood Jesus Review.
The Last Temptation of Christ: Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ does not claim to be an accurate retelling of the Gospels; it clearly states this at the beginning, however, some parts of the film are accurate.
Perhaps serving a God who struggled with the temptations of the flesh is not comforting, and Christians would rather not see a portrayal of Christ that does not match their perceptions of him.
The Last Temptation of Christ raises many interesting questions while illuminating the humanness of Jesus.

In a sense, The Last Temptation of Christ is Scorsese’s most personal and intimate film because it shows Jesus Christ as a tortured man, grappling with much the same spiritual issues that Scorsese has in his own life.
Dafoe communicates Scorsese’s vision of the tormented Christ coming to grips with his spirituality and ultimate contentment with his mission quite well.

I use to say that Christ was described as a demi-god in the Bible because He is half-man and half-god, but I was told that He is really all-man and all-god.
Many people with very strong religious convictions will see this movie as offensive, simply because Christ is portrayed a frightened man who sees his fate as a bourdon through 'half' of the film, and I implicate the word 'half' for a reason.
But as his mission nears fulfillment, he must face the greatest temptation: the normal life of a good man. Based, not on the Gospels, but on Nikos Kazantzakis' novel of the same name.

 The Last Temptation of Christ
The very fact that we are still carrying on debates about the Mission of Christ clearly illustrates that we are not in the possession of the Spiritual Knowledge that He brought to us.
What lends a slightly comical touch to this scene in particular is the fact that both John the Baptist and Jesus possessed the Knowledge of the Spiritual Laws of Creation and therefore knew and experienced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Love and Justice are ONE.
Whenever the intellect is allowed to run unchecked like this, it will never stop speculating: the characters of Christ and Judas are having endless debates throughout the film, later when Christ meets John the Baptist, they too strike up a debate, passionately arguing on the subject of Love vs. Justice.

The Last Temptation is indeed a daring depiction of Jesus' psychological hardships, but when all is said and done, this basically fictional - yet still spiritual - Christian experience will surely stay with you.
If there is anything that some may find offensive in The Last Temptation, it is either in one of Jesus' hallucinations or it is merely an attempt to show the human tendencies of an initially troubled and almost burdened Jesus.

Equally volatile are the intimations that, as a carpenter, Jesus indifferently shaped the crucifixes for other condemned prisoners long before his own fate was sealed, and that Judas (Harvey Keitel) was literally manipulated into betrayal by a Christ whose preoccuption with his own destiny compelled him to "use" others.
