 Sandman Annotations
The Annotated Sandman Edited by Ralf Hildebrandt and largely written by David Goldfarb Issue 60: "The Kindly Ones: 4" Neil Gaiman, Marc Hempel, Disraeli Page 1 panel 1: Every Hempel-drawn issue has a string or cord in this panel.
The contents are the same: a pocket watch (perhaps Prez's?); Haroun al-Raschid's magical Baghdad; the demon Azazel, pent in a bottle; and the skull of the Corinthian.
Note the shadow: his feet do not quite touch the ground.

Sandman Frequently Asked Questions - Part I
The last major Sandman story arc is called "The Kindly Ones." The title comes from one translation of the Greek "Eumenides", a name applied to the Furies after they came to be worshipped in Athens.
The final page of Sandman #63 and page 21 of Sandman #67 seem to confirm this assumption.
In Sandman #21, we are told that we see only an aspect of the Endless and that Dream casts a shadow only when he remembers to.

In THE KINDLY ONES The Sandman has invoked the wrath of the furies for having killed his son, Orpheus (even though this is what Orpheus asked for), but the story stretches far greater than the vengeance of The Furies, because in this penultimate volume of THE SANDMAN everything comes together.
While the rest of "Sandman" could, at a pinch, be described as some of the first comics work (behind anything with the name "Alan Moore" on the front) to be held as literature, "The Kindly Ones" really is a work of epic, literary genius that will stand up in years to come.

For me, The Sandman is the finset work of comics literature we've yet seen, and "Brief Lives" is my favourite story from the run.

As a group, The Sandman sits easily alongside The Dark Knight, The Watchman, Cerebus et al, and as a finale The Kindly Ones is perfect.

Sandman Frequently Asked Questions - Part I
Since Desire promised to bring the Kindly Ones down on Dream's head by getting him to spill family blood ("Three Septembers and a January," Sandman #31), the common assumption was that the upcoming story would involve the Furies' reaction to Dream killing his son, Orpheus.
The second Sandman originally was presented as an immortal who monitored dreams (using the Universal Dream Monitor that displayed images on the Dream Screen) and protected people within their dreams and in the "mortal world." Dressed in a yellow and red costume, the Sandman was "aided" by the nightmares Brute and Glob.
The Kirby Sandman made a very brief appearance in the first draft of the Black Orchid story, (He was suggested as a potential character for a dream sequence.) While he had read the 70s Sandman, Gaiman says that he was uncomfortable with the series.

The Very Best Books : The Sandman Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones
The Kindly Ones was obviously meant to be the grand finale that capstones the Sandman experience and it succeeds on every level.
Although it is actually its second-to-last story arc, The Kindly Ones is, for all intents and purposes, the climax of Sandman, Neil Gaiman's acclaimed fantasy comic book starring Morpheus, a glum, superhuman entity who rules over the realm of dreams (The subsequent The Wake is like a long epilogue).
While no previous Sandman story arc seemed like a continuation of a preceding one, The Kindly Ones is a meta-sequel of sorts that features characters and plot threads from Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House, Season of Mists, A Game of You and Brief Lives.
