Topic: The Gnostic Mass

 The Black Mass
For example, Aleister Crowley's Gnostic Mass doesn't involve prayers to Satan or any of the cruder anti-Christian blasphemies traditionally associated with the Black Mass, but it is another creative variation on the Catholic Mass and does borrow key elements from the classic stereotypical Black Mass, such as the (preferably nude) woman on the altar.
Crowley's Gnostic Mass, in turn, had a strong influence on the "Great Rite" of Gardnerian and Alexandrian Wicca.

Thelema Lodge Calendar for October 1997 e.v.
In addition to Crowley's Lesser Feast on our "foundation day," we observe this month the birthday anniversaries of the two individuals who first discussed plans over fifty years ago for an O.T.O. lodge with the name "Thelema" in northern California, and a temple here for the gnostic mass.
Members and friends of the lodge assemble each Sunday evening as the Gnostic Catholic Church for a celebration of Liber XV, Aleister Crowley's Gnostic Mass.
Our celebration of the Gnostic Mass in Horus Temple on Sunday evening 12th October will mark the twentieth anniversary of Thelema Lodge, which was founded and chartered in Berkeley by Grady McMurtry on 12th October 1977 e.v.

US Grand Lodge, OTO: Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica
Reuss translated the Gnostic Mass into German and published it in 1918 e.v., adopting it as an official rite of the Gnostic Catholic Church; and proclaiming himself "Sovereign Patriarch and Primate of the Gnostic Catholic Church," as well as Gnostic Legate to Switzerland for Bricaud's Universal Gnostic Church.
Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica is an inseparable part of Ordo Templi Orientis; and the Gnostic Mass is one of the official rituals, more specifically the central ritual, of Ordo Templi Orientis.
Reuss's publication of the Gnostic Mass constituted the formal acceptance of the Law of Thelema by the Gnostic Catholic Church, and its formal declaration of independence from Bricaud's Universal Gnostic Church.

The same year, Encausse, Bricaud and Fugairon changed the name of their church to the Universal Gnostic Church, leaving Reuss exclusive authority in the Gnostic Catholic Church.

The Invisible Basilica: The Thelemic Clergy of E.G.C.
Such is not the case in the E.G.C. Where the Catholic Mass is a miraculous rite, depending for its efficacy on the Grace of God; the Gnostic Mass is a magical rite, depending for its efficacy on the knowledge, power and talent of the celebrants.
In summary, the clergy of E.G.C. must be thoroughly familiar with the official ceremony of the Gnostic Mass and must have a good general understanding of its theory.
In the E.G.C., as in the Christian Gnostic systems, personal Gnosis is stressed, so our clergy do not serve as intervening spiritually on behalf of the congregation.

 Thelemic Tersanctus
The Tersanctus ("thrice holy") is a formula that occurs twice in the Gnostic Mass, as it also occurs twice in the Bible.
Note that in the instance from the Apocalypse, the Tersanctus is juxtaposed with a related formula which occurs at the conclusion of the creed of the Gnostic Mass: "which was, and is, and is to come." The Greek gematria of the Tersanctus is suggestive of the relationship between the two formulae.
In the Mass of the Roman Church, the Tersanctus traditionally falls between the preface and the set of sacrificial prayers that precede the eucharistic consecration.

Hoeller’s mass is as magical a ritual as any-or it would be as ‘gnostic&; as the crystal cathedral show!
Without getting into the intricacies of the ensuing argument, the conversation revolves around a quote from ecclesiastical gnostic Bishop Stephen Hoeller, who essentially thinks that Thelemites should call themselves something different besides gnostics (um… like Thelemites, maybe?).
Ecclesia Gnostica and its associated bodies cannot in good conscience recognize the O.T.O. groups and their alleged Gnostic Church as being in any way compatible to or related to our own effort or movement.

This is perhaps best exemplified in the Gnostic paean of Liber V vel Reguli:
This distinction between the world of embodied knowing and the domain of language invites comparison with the Platonic, Gnostic, and Hermetic doctrine of the Demiurge, who weaves the illusory world of ordinary experience while shielding us from a more fundamental reality.

Thelemites are those who act according to their intepretation of "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" and accept the Book of the Law, the primary Holy Book received by Aleister Crowley, as their sacred law.

The structure of the Mass is influenced by the rite of the Russian Orthodox Church ; its content draws from the symbols and texts of Thelema.
Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica ( EGC), or the Gnostic Catholic Church, is the ecclesiastical arm of Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), an international fraternal initiatory organization devoted to promulgating the Law of Thelema.

"Jesus of the Cults" (Jenkins) - CESNUR
Crowley’s Gnostic Catholic Church practiced a mass or liturgy in which the canon of commemorated saints included Basilides, Valentinus, Bardesanes, and the others "that transmitted the light of the Gnosis to us, their successors and their heirs." Crowley recommended the Pistis Sophia to his disciples as "an admirable introduction"
Another influential vehicle for Gnostic revivalism was the Theosophical movement, which was co-founded by Madame Blavatsky in the 1870s, and which would influence most of the occult sects of the twentieth century.
He would have been horrified to know that such excerpts would be taken up enthusiastically by later occultists like Aleister Crowley, who led a whole neo-Gnostic revival at the end of the nineteenth century.

How Gnostic Jesus Became the Christ of Scholars By Philip Jenkins--Gnostic gospels Pagels -- Beliefnet.com
Though Biblical scholars have not experienced any kind of mass conversion to Gnostic Christianity, nevertheless ideas which were once stigmatized have now become accepted, even orthodox: to coin a phrase, the stone which was once rejected has become the cornerstone.
Gnostic spirituality is easily reconciled with the insights of modern psychotherapy, as the heretics believed that the conflicts and dramas described in the Christian world-view occurred within the mind of the individual.
Gnostic writers were intuitive and subjective, and "considered original creative invention to be the mark of anyone who becomes spiritually alive." It is implied that the historical Jesus would have been far more at home in these circles than in the stodgy and authoritarian church which claimed to speak in his name.

Reuss and Kellner together prepared a brief manifesto for their Order in 1903, which was published the next year in The Oriflamme.
O.T.O. Under Reuss Rudolph Steiner (1861-1925), who was at the time the Secretary General of the German branch of the Theosophical Society, was chartered in 1906 as Deputy Grand Master of a subordinate O.T.O./Memphis/Mizraim Chapter and Grand Council called "Mystica Aeterna" in Berlin.
