Te Deum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Te aeternum patrem, As the eternal father, All the earth doth worship Thee: omnis terra veneratur.
Te Deum is an early Christian hymn of praise.
Lord God of Sabaoth; Pleni sunt caeli et terra Heaven and earth are full Heaven and earth are full maiestatis gloriae tuae." of the majesty of your glory." of the Majesty: of Thy glory.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Te Deum
The Te Deum is followed immediately by Lauds except on Christmas Day (when it is followed by the prayer, and this is Mass).
Cyprian and the "munerari" of the oldest texts of the Te Deum are a mere coincidence; but the rest of the similar passages cannot be an accident.
The general rubrics (titulus XXXI) of the Roman Breviary direct the recitation of the Te Deum at the end of Matins: (a) on all feasts throughout the year, whether of nine or of three lessons, and throughout their octaves.

 Hymnology: Te Deum
Te Deum is also sometimes called the Ambrosian Hymn because of its association with St.
The Te Deum was one of only 2 hymns (along with Veni Creator Spiritus) which was incluced in the Anglican Service by Thomas Cranmer in 1549.
A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who recite it in thanksgiving and a plenary indulgence is granted if the hymn is recited publicly on the last day of the year.

Music of Hector Berlioz: Te deum
As he originally wrote the Te deum, Berlioz envisaged the orchestra would take the central position (“east”) in a large church, with the great pipe organ placed antiphonally at the far end (“west”) of the church.
As he had done in the Grande messe des morts, Berlioz at times arbitrarily re-orders the traditional text of the Te Deum in order to increase its dramatic possibilities; the six choral movements that result from this re-arrangement are described as either “hymns&; or “prayers”, and the climactic Judex crederis contains elements of each.
The pedal notes then descend back to their original pitch and the music also dies away to the subdued dynamic with which the movement began, as explained by the text: Berlioz was delighted to find that the words of the Te Deum contained a “miserere”.

There in seven words you have the raison d'être of John Rutter's Te Deum and other church music.
The opening track, the eponymous Te Deum, is Rutter's choral rendition of a 5th century ecclesiastical thanksgiving canticle originally in vulgate Latin (whose opening exhortation "Te Deum laudamus" translates to "We praise thee, O God").

This sacred work (and the concert overtures) were given their American debuts in October 1892.

 Te Deum
An English version has been used by the Anglican Church since the 1600's; in the Roman church it is sung after, or instead of, a responsory at the end of Matins on feast days and Sundays.
This was not an unreasoned choice (and had been suggested in their correspondence), since Te Deums had been used, historically, as Thanksgiving pieces and victory hymns.
Dvorak also added the “Benedicamus Patrem”, with its alleluias, to conclude the work– this text is not part of the traditional Te Deum, although in some liturgies a separate benedictory may be spoken or sung.

 Festival Te Deum - 1872
Appropriately enough for the occasion, Sullivan appended the verse "O Lord, save the Queen: and mercifully hear us when we call upon thee" to the text of the Te Deum.
But to allow for performance in other circumstances, the vocal score gives a repeat of the last verse of the Te Deum proper as an alternative.
The Queen did not attend the performance, but the Duke of Edinburgh, whom Sullivan numbered among his friends, arranged for the work to be dedicated to her.

 Haydn's Te Deum
The Te Deum is a choral work throughout, without the solo sections that are heard in Haydn's masses and other sacred works.
The Te Deum was composed around 1799, but its first recorded performance was not until 1800 at Eisenstadt, the home of the Esterhazy family, to celebrate Lord Nelson's (and, inevitably, Lady Hamilton's) arrival there.
For those with a serious Catholic upbringing, Haydn uses the Gregorian Te Deum plainchant from the eighth psalm-tone.

We know little of the circumstances that led Berlioz to undertake his Te Deum: there was no commission (as there had been for the Requiem), no literary thunderstroke (as for the Fantastique), nothing to commemorate (in the way the Symphonie funèbre et triomphale commemorated the Trois Glorieuses).
Berlioz gently altered the liturgical text, as he had done with the Requiem, to accommodate his overall plan, in this case an alternation of mighty hymns and "de véritables prières dont l'humilité et la tristesse contrasterent avec la majesteueuse solennité des hymnes." The concluding Judex crederis is titled both "hymne et prière."

The Te Deum is drawn out of silence, as the composer himself suggests, and represents a genuine and simple hymn of praise, with the words of the text beautifully framed by the music.
Silouans Song struck me as suggestive of Vaughan Williams, with the melancholy sound of the lower strings supported by a powerful bass line characteristic of Pärt, who more and more shows himself as a superb orchestral colorist.
Here we have four pieces, each written on commission and each a gem of compositional style.
