Tao Te Ching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tao Te Ching has been translated almost as many times as the Bible (second behind the Bible in fact).
In the Tao Te Ching, nothingness is the theme of many chapters and one could see the entire book as a suite of variations on "the Powers of Nothingness", echoing the ancient Buddhist philosophy of 'form is emptiness, emptiness is form'.
As in the theory of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the Tao Te Ching assumes that ancient times were those of happiness, purity of intentions, and full communion with nature: "the times when anyone could look inside the nests of all the birds".

The Tao of Heaven contendeth not, yet it overcometh; it is silent, yet its need is answered; it summoneth none, but all men come to it of their free will.

One of the most famous books of Chinese spirituality is the Tao Te Ching, written by Lao Tsu about 2500 years ago.

John Mabry accomplishes this task sensitively and intelligently, both honoring the Tao Te Ching and illuminating the Gospel as more compassionate, relevant and universal than most (even conservative Christians) have imagined.
This book is, in my opinion, the best of the handful of books comparing Asian religions with the teachings of Jesus.
The book serves intelligently and effectively its purpose: to present to the conservative Christian an opening into mysticism in general (both western and eastern) and to the Tao Te Ching in particular.

Having spent my youth in Korea; being both Korean and Chinese with a twist of Japanese (Dad was born there and spent his childhood there); and having spent most of my life in America, I've enjoyed and found this translation of the Tao Te Ching to be enlightening.
I find it amazing that some occidental reviewers were able to attain such a clear grasp of the more literal translations where I could not (not only am I Asian-American, I have a very strong background in philosophy).
Even with my connections to the East, I've found reading other translations to be extremely difficult--they were all too literal.

The Tao of the Tao-te Ching has received a wide variety of interpretations because of its elusiveness and mystical overtones and has been a basic concept in both philosophy and religion.
The long tradition that Lao-tzu was the author of the Tao-te Ching was so badly shaken in the 19th century that some scholars even questioned the historical existence of the sage.
