Taisekiji is visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world who come to worship the Dai-Gohonzon, the ultimate object of veneration in Nichiren Shoshu.
Taisekiji (大石寺; full name: 多宝富士大日蓮華山大石寺 Tahō Fuji Dainichirenge-zan Taisekiji) is the head temple of the Nichiren Shoshu school of Nichiren Buddhism, a Japanese branch.
Taisekiji was founded in 1290 ce by Nikkō, one of Nichiren 's immediate disciples.

Taisekiji temple (&;) is the head temple of Nichiren Shoshu Nichiren Shōshū Buddhism (&;), with a growing number of believers worldwide, is a branch of Nichiren Buddhism based on the teachings of the 13th century Japanese Buddhist monk named Nichiren (1222-1282).

Nichikan (1665-1726) was the 26th high priest of Taisekiji Temple and he is considered to be the one who consolidated and systematized the distinct doctrines of Nichiren Shoshu, especially the doctrine that Nichiren Shonin is the Eternal Buddha, not Shakyamuni Buddha.
In 1874, Taisekiji Temple became part of the Shoretsu Branch of Nichiren Buddhism by the decree of the new Meiji government.
Nikkyo was originally a priest at Juhonji, but he moved to Taisekiji and became Nichiu's disciple.

 Nichiren Shu Italia
Taisekiji and consequently the whole of Nichiren Shoshu are derived from the lineage of one of Nichiren Daishonin's major disciples, Nikko Shonin.
Interestingly, even though the Taisekiji line of schools and groups believe Nichiren Daishonin to be the True Buddha, Nikko Shonin considered Sakyamuni Buddha to be the Tathagata and Original Master of Buddhism, and Nichiren Daishonin as a Great Bodhisattva, leader of all the Jiyu no Bosatsu, or the Bodhisattvas of the Earth.
The Nikko temples, which are either connected or derived from Taisekiji temple, namely Nichiren Shoshu, Shoshin Kai, Kensho Kai and the Soka Gakkai all believe that Sakyamuni Buddha is merely an historical figure in the overall spectrum of Buddhism.

 Taisekiji
Taisekiji was founded in 1290 after Nichiren Daishonin's passing, when the second high priest, Nikko Shonin, moved to the broad plain at the foot of Mt. Fuji.
Taisekiji is a name deeply revered by Nichiren Shoshu believers the world over.
No matter what, be close to the priest who knows the heart of the Lotus Sutra, keep learning from him the truth of Buddhism and continue your journey of faith.

Taisekiji went back to Tendai Shu Esoteric Buddhism during the medieval age.
Stone, in her latest book, names the Taisekiji Priests who went over to Mt. Hiei (the traditional center of the Tendai Sect): "Fuji interaction with Tendai institutions are less easy to document than in the case of Minobu, but they nevertheless occurred.
However, most of them have thrown off this form of curruption since the the begining of the modern age when the entire Gosho was better circulated and forged texts were exposed as inauthentic.

LIAR, CAJOLER AND SCHEMER Masatomo Yamazaki and Soka Gakkai
In the 15 century, Taisekiji was sold to the landlord, while 9th HP Nichi-u was away for the trip to spread the teaching (see an Interview with 59th HP Nichiko; Daibyaku Renge, November issue of 1956).
During the time of 26th HP Nichikan, all slanderous teachings were refuted, teaching regained purity and Taisekiji was rejuvenated.
However, during the Edo and Meiji eras, Taisekiji lost the original spirit, and similar to other sects, became a funeral conducting religion.

He later entrusted Taisekiji to His successor, Nichimoku Shonin, while He stayed in nearby Omosu and founded a seminary for the training of priests.
The establishment of Taisekiji at Mount Fuji was in accordance with Nichiren Daishonin's will and was essential in order to provide a sanctuary in keeping with the Three Great Secret Laws of True Buddhism.
This was an expression of His conviction as the one person who could protect and realize the purpose of True Buddhism.

Taisekiji has used the closedate of this letter (1279) to back it's claims for the date of the Ita Mandara.
Taisekiji says that it was carved on Mt. Shichimenzan, near Minobusan, by Nippo, a well known sculptor.
In other words, the most learned Taisekiji priest of this century, with access to all the resources of Taisekiji, could not come up with any historical source for this person.

Taisekiji contended that Ikeda had doubts about the Head Priest, accusing him of corruption and abuse of power.
Therefore, excommunication of Soka Gakkai was necessary to save "the sanctity of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism." This tension was especially increased with the appearance of Daisaku Ikeda as a leader of Soka Gakkai in 1960s.

Taisekiji is the fundamental sanctuary of faith and practice for the entire Nichiren Shoshu priesthood and laity.
The place where the Dai-Gohonzon is enshrined and the High Priest resides is the central place of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism.
It is a most important practice that we make a pilgrimage to Taisekiji and do Gongyo to the Dai-Gohonzon under the conduction of the High Priest.

The Yashiro Daimandara that Taisekiji asserts is the DG is dated October 12 1279.
You won't be surprised to know that Taisekiji's 26th chief priest Nichikan wrote the "Exegesis of the Kanjin Honzon-sho" (Kanjin Honzon-sho Mondan).
I say "Oishigahara Taisekiji" to distinguish it from present-day "Fujinomiya Taisekiji" which is an entirely different location.

 DaiGohonzon of Taiseki-ji: Gohonzon Gallery
The first mention of the Dai-Gohonzon is during the tenure of Nichiu, the ninth high priest of Taisekiji.
More specifically the legend states that a priest named Hakken-bo, one of Nikko's disciples, carried it on his back and that it was later deposited at Taisekiji.
In any case, the story of Yashiro Kunishige bestowing the Dai-Gohonzon contradicts the story that it was kept at Mt. Minobu until Hakken-bo carried it there on his back when Nikko left for the environs of Mt. Fuji.

 The Orthodoxy Question
Taisekiji Temple preserves the so-called "Two-Transfer Documents." According to the Dictionary of Buddhist Terms and Concepts, published by Nichiren Shôshû International Center in 1983, these documents are: 1.
Nichiren Ichigo Guhô Fuzoku Shû written by Nichiren at Minobu in September 1282, in which Nichiren transferred the entirety of his teachings to Nikkô and entrusted him with the mission of propagating true Buddhism, and 2.
It is interesting to see that Nichidô (1283-1341), the fourth Chief Priest of Taisekiji Temple, clearly states in his Nikkô Shônin Goden Sôan (The Biography of Nikkô) that Nikkô stayed at Minobu for three years, not for six years.

Famous Quotes from High Priests of Taisekiji
"The Taisekiji school is the denomination which recieved it's transmission from the Daishonin, so the followers of this school must be sufficiently versed in the Gosho.
The doctrines in the depths of the Gosho are handed down by the **successive High Priests,** the great principles of those teachings **must be learned from a teacher**, and the disciples must not even for a moment adhere to their own views."
In his "Commentary on the Kegi Sho", the fifty-ninth High Priest of Taisekiji, Nichiko Hori

The Head Temple, Taisekiji, is the foremost sacred place in the entire world, where the Dai-Gohonzon, the ultimate source of the attainment of Buddhahood for all humanity, is enshrined, and where the High Priest, who possesses the life blood conferred to only one person since the Daishonin, dwells.
Therefore, when we Nichiren Shoshu priests and believers make a pilgrimage to the Head Temple, Taisekiji, we humbly use the word “Tozan,” which means, “to climb to the head temple.” The word “Tozan” is not used to mean a visit to a local temple.
Actually, “zan” is only part of the word “honzan,” which is literally translated as “head temple.” The head is the highest place on the body.

 Experience of Craig Bratcher
I am a living testament to the fact that everything the SGI has reported concerning Taisekiji is pure and unadulterated lies.
However, most SGI members have been tricked into recieving a photocopy in lieu of their sanctioned Gohonzon and thus, put themselves into the category of any number of tourists that visit Taisekiji each year, barred from Gokaihi.

A young believer, whose father began practicing Buddhism at the behest of Nichiren Daishonin, donated the land to the Second High Priest Nikko Shonin.
Relying on a step-by-step summary of the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and Nichiren Daishonin, this booklet explains - for those willing to explore this practice - why the path of Nichiren Daishonin, as preserved by Nichiren Shoshu, should be considered superior to all others.
It is also where denominational relics, including a sizable collection of original writings by Nichiren Daishonin, have been carefully preserved.

I am certain that you are profoundly touched by the magnificence of Taisekiji, behind which Mt. Fuji, the highest and best known mountain in Japan, looms majestically.

Rev. Ryuei: Something from Marc Strumpf that I liked
Furthermore, they and the SGI continue to spread slander in regard to the other five major disciples of Nichiren and in presenting Nikko as they do, they effectively slander him and the legitimate representative of his lineage at Kitayama Honmonji.
So I do not see this as mindless bashing but more like a humorous telling it like it is. I am sorry this offends partisans of the Taisekiji view (in the Shoshu and SGI) but I am offended by the Taisekiji view itself which I think is idolatrous and un-Buddhist.
I am willing to discuss specific claims in a civilized manner but I feel no obligation to pay any reverence to those claims, anymore than I would bow down and kiss the ring of a Catholic pope or bishop.

Robin Beck: Authentic Nichiren Mandara Part XV?: More: Preview of the Yashiro Kunishige Memorial Daimandara
Honmon Shoshu believes the Yashiro Kunishige Memorial Daimandara was transferred to wood in the 16th{?} century and later became confused with the Daigohonzon, which is the Red Pine Mannen Kugo Dai(go)honzon, eye-opened on the same date in 1279, and the same face image as the Daihonzon of 1274.
None of these see the Taisekiji Ita Mandala as especially significant, some even see it as a possible forgery, intended to asssert Taisekiji authority over the other temples.
And I presently disagree with some of the interpretations of Honmon Shoshu, like Nichiren as the Eternal Buddha/Father of the Juryo Chapter.

along the middle path ... Shakyamuni Buddha
there is no such thing as a "true Buddha," either one is a Buddha or one isn't, there is no "false Buddha." the Taisekiji branch believes that Nichiren is the "True Buddha," saying that because he inscribed the Gohonzon, he must be superior to Shakyamuni, and therefore the only "true" Buddha.
it's a misleading term made up by the Taisekiji branch of Nichiren Buddhism (Nichiren Shoshu, and by association, Soka Gakkai International).
They then discard Shakyamuni, which has the action of discarding the Eternal Buddha, and thus invalidating their entire set of beliefs.
