Stoicism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stoic concepts of passion and apatheia are analogous to the Buddhist noble truths; All life has suffering (Dukkha), suffering is rooted in passion and desire (Samudaya), meditation and virtue can free one from suffering (Nirodha and Marga).
Following Socrates, the Stoics held that unhappiness and evil are the results of ignorance.
Stoic philosophical / spiritual practices included logic, Socratic dialogue and self-dialogue, contemplation of death, training attention to remain in the present moment (similar to some forms of Eastern meditation), daily reflection on everyday problems and possible solutions, and so on.

 STOIC DOCTRINE JULY 4997
The Stoic Doctrine consists of axioms, theories, and hypotheses of applied beliefs of the Stoic religion derived under the logic of science/mathematics from which are formulated philosophy, and theology.
The Stoic is a mathematician or studies daily to be a mathematician and is a lifetime student seeking universal knowledge of God, the Grand Unified Force.
Stoic beliefs shall be updated constantly to conform to new discoveries in current science and mathematics and to reach higher levels of morality as society achieves a higher level of intellectual awareness and progresses with greater magnitude toward the truth of God, the Grand Unified Force.

 Stoicism
The Stoics agree to put in the forefront the doctrine of presentation and sensation, inasmuch as the standard by which the truth of things is tested is generically a presentation, and again the theory of assent and that of apprehension and thought, which precedes all the rest, cannot be stated apart from presentation.
The Stoics also conceive God as identical with the cosmos; from the one God, whose original nature is fire or aither, come the four elements, and from these originate all things.
It is clear that the Stoics must reject both the Platonic understanding of universals (Ideas) and even the Aristotelean concrete universal; for the Stoics, the general concepts that human beings possess are derivative of presentations, and do not exist in a primary sense.

 Stoicism [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
It means, in the first place, that men should conform themselves to nature in the wider sense, that is, to the laws of the universe, and secondly, that they should conform their actions to nature in the narrower sense, to their own essential nature, reason.
Hence the stoics, with a masterly disregard of consistency, stuck to the principle, and yet declared that among things indifferent some are preferable to others.
We know little for certain as to what share particular Stoics, Zeno, Cleanthes, or Chrysippus, had in the formation of the doctrines of the school, But after Chryssipus the main lines of the doctrine were complete.

 Stoicism
At bottom what the Stoics are committed to is the two-fold view that it is within our power to avoid falling into error and that there is a kind of impression which reveals to us the world as it really is and which is different from those impressions which might not so reveal the world.
Above I noted that the Stoics thought that God or designing fire contained within itself the plan of all that is to happen between conflagrations and that it brings this plan to fruition in its action upon matter.
The Stoics, by contrast, claim that so long as I order (and express) my preferences in accordance with my nature and universal nature, I will be virtuous and happy, even if I do not actually get the things I prefer.

Stoic Ethics [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Cosmic nature (the universe), the Stoics firmly believed, is a rationally organized and well-ordered system, and indeed coextensive with the will of Zeus, the impersonal god.
The Stoics further maintained that the virtues are inter-entailing and constitute a unity: to have one is to have them all.
The Stoics were convinced that as one approached this goal, one came closer to real and certain happiness.

Stoic, himself, was a very handsome horse with a strong Abu Farwa look: of course he out to have had, since he was both a grandson and great grandson of Abu Farwa.
Many people considered FV Stoic one of the best sons of Farlane, his sire who was held by some to be one of the most beautiful Arabians stallions ever.

Greek Philosophy [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Stoic logic, all knowledge originates in the real impressions of things on the senses, which the soul, being at birth a blank slate, receives in the form of presentations.
Stoic doctrine was the dogma that all true being is corporeal.
The test of their truth is the convincing or persuasive force with which they impress themselves upon the soul.

Involuntary emotions "caused by impressions recieved by the body, and by the soul" (Hadot, 115).
In an essay in the January, 2002 Stoic Voice Journal, Stoic Spiritual Exercises, Elen Buzaré discusses the same exercise (XII,3):

 Stoic Ethics
Because it makes no sense to limit or restrain the passions, the Stoics believe that the passions must be extirpated before they begin to contaminate reason.
The answer, of course, has to do with the Stoic undertanding of the nature of the passions.
When we read that Zeno defined passion as "an irrational and unnatural movement of the soul," (Lives 7.110.) we might be tempted to believe that this is the case.

Stoicism: Marcus Aurelius. The Stoic emperor
He shared the basic Stoic belief in the divinity of the cosmos as an intelligent being with a soul, and stressed (perhaps too fatalistically) the harmony of all things and the importance of resigning oneself to whatever happened.
He was not an original nor a systematic philosopher, but in his meditations, a series of notes to himself, he formulated his pantheist Stoic beliefs with a passionate religious conviction.
We also believe that body and spirit are both made of the same substance.

Sketches in the History of Western Philosophy
Apart from ethics, the Stoics devoted considerable creative attention to logic, but their metaphysical doctrines were mostly derived from the teachings of Heraclitus.
After coming to Athens, Zeno was a student of Crates, but broke away out of humiliation at the kinds of things he was expected to do [7].
That ideal seemed realized later in the Roman Empire.
