Siwa also prospered as a religious centre, with many kings sending delegates to consult the Oracle of Amun.
After consulting the oracle, he claimed to be the son of the god Zeus Amun, and so chose to be buried in Siwa.
Siwa started to go into decline around the sixth century AD, when many of the pagan temples in Siwa fell out of use thanks to the spread of Christianity.

Yet Siwa was, in its own way, the centre of Egyptian culture, for a temple built to honour the sun god Amun-Ra housed a divine oracle whose fame in 700 BC was widespread in the eastern Mediterranean.
In 1820, Siwa came under outside rule for the first time when it was conquered by the troops of Mohamed Ali, the Ottoman pasha of Egypt.
This is conceivable given that along with political prisoners, the Romans banished church leaders to the Western Oases.

It seems there was a repetition of him sending troops, the people of the Siwa resisting, then giving in and agreeing to pay tribute, but once the troops were gone, reneging and refusing to allow strangers into their community, so Muhammad Ali would once again send troops.
However, matters were not settled in the Oasis as for the distant rule of Muhammad Ali.
"Then the entire Western force, led by their chief, Uthman Habun, on his great white war-horse, the only one in Siwa, surged out of the town, through the narrow gates, firing and shrieking, waving swards and spears, followed by their women throwing stones.

Al-Ahram Weekly Heritage Dialogue with Amun
Possibly Cambyses wanted to silence the oracle and the priests at Siwa, who had only predicted bad news for him and his forebears; whatever his reason, the year after his arrival he sent what, if not exaggerated, seems like an unnecessarily large army of 50,000 men to destroy it.
There are no surviving eyewitness reports of his death and the original source of this assertion is not known, but the Macedonian king was fascinated by the oracle and it is quite probable that he did express a wish to be buried in Egypt.
The oracle continued to draw believers at least until the second half of the same century, and the priests may have continued to serve Amun for another 400 years.
