 Encyclopedia of Greek Mythology: Sisyphus
Sisyphus was founder and king of Corinth, or Ephyra as it was called in those days.
His greatest triumph came at the end of his life, when the god Hades came to claim him personally for the kingdom of the dead.
Hades had brought along a pair of handcuffs, a comparative novelty, and Sisyphus expressed such an interest that Hades was persuaded to demonstrate their use - on himself.

Encyclopedia of Laser Physics and Technology - Sisyphus cooling, laser cooling, dressed states, Cohen-Tannoudji
Sisyphus cooling (sometimes also called Sisyphos cooling) is a mechanism for laser cooling of atoms or ions using light forces.
The explanation of Sisyphus cooling is somewhat sophisticated and typically involves the pictures of dressed states.
It has been understood in 1985 after the observation that laser cooling experiments with cesium atoms can lead to temperatures well below the Doppler limit, so that the simple mechanism of Doppler cooling is not a sufficient explanation.
