 Encyclopedia: Sinhala language
Sinhala is the language spoken by the majority of the people living in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon).
Sinhala became the official language of Sri Lanka in 1956.
Stone inscriptions, as well as written texts (the Maha Wamsa, a history of the kings of Sri Lanka going back to almost the Buddha 's time) suggest that Sinhala is a very old language.

Origin of the Sinhala language and the Sinhalese - InfoLanka Forum
Sinhala evolved through the intermingling of the Tamil, Pali and Sanskrit languages.
There was no Sinhala race in Lanka before the Dipavamsa described the Buddhists as such.
In the manner of Christian missionaries converting Buddhists and Hindus to Christianity in the 16th century A.D., Arahat Mahinda converted the Hindu King Devenampiya Tissa and his Hindu subjects (Tamils), to the Buddhist faith in 246 B.C. The vehicles of the Dhamma were the Pali and Sanskrit languages.

Evolution of the Sinhala language- virtual library-Sri Lanka
For example, Sinhala hatha (seven) is related not only to the Hindi sat and the Sanskrit Sapta, but also to the Persian haft, French sept, Greek hepta, and Latin septem.
Such old Sinhala words like dana (people), rada (king), and pungul (person) have to all, intents and purposes ceased to exist, and have been superseded by their respective Sanskrit equivalents, jana, raja and pudgala.
But by no means is pure Sinhala or Elu(as it is known in literary circles) confined to Sri Lanka.

AllRefer - Sri Lanka - Sinhalese Sri Lankan Information Resource
In 1988 approximately 93 percent of the Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, and 99.5 percent of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka spoke Sinhala.
Their shared language and religion unite all ethnic Sinhalese, but there is a clear difference between the "Kandyan" and the "low-country" Sinhalese.
The neighboring Buddhist monastery or shrine is the center of cultural life for Sinhalese villagers (see Sri Lanka - Buddhism, this ch.).

Also he points out that words in the Sinhala language can be traced back to Sanskrit.
Hussein quotes some Sinhala words which are similar to the corresponding words in Sanskrit to show how Sinhala was derived from Sanskrit.
Now, due to this subterfuge, if anyone were to refer to "Sanskrit", none can be sure whether the reference is to the Panini Sanskrit or to anyone of the other Prakrit languages including the Veda itself since such languages existed before the time of Panini.

Summer Intensive Sinhala Language Program - Department of Asian Studies
The program provides a six-week intensive (six credit hours) introduction to one of Sri Lanka's two official languages used by the island's majority population and central to scholarly and applied projects in Sri Lanka.
Spoken (colloquial) language skills are emphasized during the program, which also introduces the writing system and colloquial reading materials.
This lays the foundation for later study of literary Sinhala.
