 XEBEC SoundArts Shomyo
The word, shomyo, refers to the calling of God's name by the Brahman monks of India, the expression of prayer to God, and the versification and voicing of God's teachings (sutra); in other words, the act of chanting.
From India, shomyo was transmitted to China, and along with Buddhism, from China to Japan, where it was adopted as part of esoteric Buddhism.
This is, at least, the ideal on which shomyo as it is found in esoteric Buddhism is based.

This is evident from the names of shomyo anthologies such as the priest Sokai's Gyozan Mokuroku (from the thirteenth century) and the esoteric Buddhist text, Gyozan Taigaishu.
While the music of sutra chanting and shomyo are at once a means of encouraging faith, propagating religious beliefs, and conducting ceremonies, among the monks who practice them, there are undoubtedly a great number who are attracted to the beauty of the music itself.
Shichiseikai (literally, "seven-voice group") is a shomyo practice group composed of young, Kyoto monks from the Jodo sect of Buddhism.

But the "insiders" in the field, the monks who are carrying on the shomyo tradition, have for the most part devoted themselves to being shomyo performers.
The American composer Richard TEITELBAUM has written a work for shomyo, which was performed in 1983 in a Catholic church near the wall that separated west and east Berlin.
In these performances, being that the theater is national, more emphasis has been placed on the artistic aspects of Buddhist music than on its religious aspects.

The word shomyo originally referred to the study of phonemes--the smallest units of sound in speech that are believed to create particular vibrations in the body--and by extension, the universe--that was part of a set of ancient Indian spiritual teachings.
But however effective the chant may be as technique for clearing the mind before meditation, its words carry their own very literal appeal: "In the early morning the dharma body shines radiantly./Sitting in meditation, I smile with joy./This is a brand new day; I vow to walk through it in mindfulness."

Popular during the Kamakura Period, this instrument is used primarily for storytelling (heke-biwa) and also traditionally in gagaku.
