YogaJournal.Com: The Diamond Sutra: The Perfection of Wisdom by Red Pine
The Buddhist sutra ("thread") is no different from its Hindu counterpart, which we're familiar with from books like the Yoga Sutra and the Shiva Sutra.
Like the other sutra books in the Prajnaparamita, the Diamond Sutra is an eyewitness account of one of the Buddha's teachings.
The Diamond Sutra, along with Red Pine's commentary, is a precious tool that reflects the brilliance of the Buddha's teaching and enables us, if we give it the chance, to cut through what's hardest in our lives: our own self-ignorance.

The Trimurti or Hindu triad of gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
Brahma combines with Vishnu, the preserver, and Shiva, the destroyer of evil, to make up the Trimurti, the three aspects of Brahman, the supreme being, acting in the world.
These were fervent Brahmins, the bitterest foes of Buddhism, their deities being Vishnu, the solar god, Shiva, the divine impersonation of natural forces, and Brahma, the supreme ruler of priests and legislators.

The purification, devotion, and meditation on Shiva as the Self from the void of the spiritual heart (daharakasha) define the path.

 Shiva - The Sensuous Yogi
The vehicle of Shiva is a bull (vrishabh or vrisha in Sanskrit).
Although both Shiva and his goddess Shakti are creator deities, the true scope of their union is not procreation, but pleasure and voluptuousness (ananda).
The bull of Shiva is hence also called the joyful (Nandi), correspondingly Shiva himself is known as the lord of joy (Nandikeshvara).

These sUtras (called by different names - 'shiva sUtras', 'mAheshvara sUtra', 'pratyAhAra-sUtra') allow Panini to form pratyaharas or keys representing various sets of sounds to be called in the operations.
Adapting the sUtraic style was for brevity or lAghava (brevity), as for ancient grammarians brevity even by half a syllable was like celebrating the birth of a son (`ardha mAtra lAghavena putrotsava manyante vaiyAkaranAH').
The next sUtra `adyudAtashca' (3.1.3) if read along with 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 means that a pratyaya (3.1.1) which is to be placed after a base (3.1.2) has an acute accent on its first syllable (3.1.3).
