 Balanone's Temple of Set FAQ
Setians who have left the Temple of their own accord may be allowed to rejoin on a case-by-case basis.
We prefer to avoid discussing simply Setian philosophy and religion or Satanism in alt.pagan, since those are more appropriate to alt.satanism, but the relationships between Setian philosophy and religion and other Pagan philosophies and religions are on-topic and suitable for that newsgroup.
"Setianism" is a term which can be applied to the Setian philosophy, the Setian religion, and/or the Setian way of life.

The similarities/differences between Setianism and Christianity are a more interesting topic, at least to me. And so, while I _do_ have an opinion on the whole ToS/CoS fight (and I'm sure everyone here has heard it already), please forgive me for keeping it to myself.
This would be similar to Christian mysticism, true; one could also draw a comparison between Setianism and Sufi Islam.
A study of the similarities between various mystical traditions, including Setianism, could prove illuminating.

I have seldom heard such a distinct and specific claim made as relates Setian ideas and modern Western religion.
'Setianism' is now an apparent bygone term in your lexicon.
we now understand that the method of conferment and even the *meaning* of 'priesthood' between the LaVeyan and Setian CoSatanists are different.

 IIDB - Your thoughts appreciated
That reluctance may have something to do with the way Setianism originated, (viz., as a result of dissention from Lavey's Church).
I suspect though that unless this is orientated towards philosophy, you should probably start a new thread in the Non-Abrahamic religions section of this messageboard so we can both avoid breaking the forum rules.
Owl, when I get the time, I'll be sure and address the rest of your concerns.

Satan and the Set-Jehovah Connection - Satanic Community : Satanism
Aside from remarks members of the Church of Satan and former members of the Temple of Set have made there stands one major flaw which takes Setianism completely out of being a Left-Hand Path religion.
I am satisfied that the Temple of Set embraces and perpetuates a LHP paradigm as well as most active LHP-favoring, magio-religious organizations out there, and better than some.
In most occult circles of whatever color they associate themselves with, there is an obsession with finding a primary source, or first cause, in the Aristotilean tradition.

Temple of Set - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a religion Setians believe in Set and work with Set, but do so more as if he were a father, elder brother, or close friend, rather than a god as defined by most religions.
The Temple of Set is an initiatory organization, dedicated to the growth and development of its members.
Setians recognize several levels or degrees of initiation, and identify their members by their degree.

 Re: Satanism-Federally recognised?
I know that the Church of Satan does not want tax-exempt status, but I don't think that can prevent a certain religion from not being recognized.
It is the only tax-exempt and federally recognized form of Satanism, also known as "Setianism".
I was reading something recently about the Temple of Set.

Re: A Fox in Satans Clothing
Myriads of Satanists existed long before 1966, just as there were Set cults of ancient Egypt long before Aquino made his religion up and defined it as Setianism.
Groups like the Church of Satan and the Temple of Set are nothing more than personality cults.
I think he defined it the way he understood it to be, and that he had enough people who agreed with him to start an organization.

Amazon.com: Books: Uncle Setnakt's Essential Guide to the Left Hand Path
For those who are looking for a good book on _left-hand path_ I'd recommend "Demons of the Flesh" by Nikolas and Zeena Schreck.
However it offers an intelligible image of some aspects of "modern Setianism".
Despite its valuable lessons, the book has some flaws: oversimplification of things like left-hand path.

In my experience, what most Satanists have in common is a strong belief in themselves and their abilities, they walk what is known as 'the Left-Hand Path', and are non-conformist.
The reason you are getting so many different answers is more than likely because their are different 'brands' of Satanism, just like there are many denominations of Christianity.
I, personally, fall into the 'brand' of Setianism, or Temple of Set.

Inspired and influenced by the Discordianism, Lovecraft mythos and Setianism, D. Lawrence has compiled a collection of poetry gathered over the years.
Often lyrical with delightful turns of phrase, Lawrence seems taken with decidedly darker themes, with titles such as Bitter', Set', Death', Necronomicon', and of course, the title-poem Cthuloid Dreams'.
