Semele - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Greek mythology, Semele, daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia, was the mother of Dionysus (the god and his votaries were both identified as "Bacchus") by Zeus.
The name Semele, like other elements of Dionysiac cult (thyrsus, dithyramb) are manifestly not Greek (Burkert 1985), apparently Thraco-Phrygian (Kerenyi 1976 p107; Seltman 1956) and the myth of her father Cadmus gives him a Phoenician origin.
The story formed the basis for the secular oratorio, Semele (1744) by George Frideric Handel and for the opera, Semele (1707) by John Eccles.

 Semele, Greek Mythology Link.
He promised her, as lovers often do, to give her whatever she asked, and Hera persuaded Semele to ask Zeus to appear before her as the god does when he meets his own wife, knowing that Semele, being a mortal, could not endure the majesty of divine presence.
Yet others have said that the reason why Zeus killed Semele before she could give birth, was that he wished the child to be born of two immortals, thus being itself immortal from its very birth.
When Semele's sisters learned what happened, they did not exercise benevolence, but instead spread the rumour that Semele had consorted with some mortal lover falsely accusing Zeus, and that was why, they said, Semele was blasted by thunder.

Semele now feels she must have a concrete experience of the Godhead, and with feminine charm she gets the unsuspecting Zeus to promise whatever boon she demands.
She plants a seed of doubt in the young woman's mind as to whether the father of the child really is the great god Zeus, suggesting that many mortal men have entered the beds of unwitting young girls calling themselves a god.
We might say that she demands experience of the sublime which is inherently self-destructive when made literal (subsequently her unborn son Dionysos is to offer the experience symbolically in the Greek Mysteries).

Semele is a secular oratorio by George Frideric Handel.
Although Congreve, and its original composer Eccles, had wished Semele to be presented on the stage, Handel designed and performed it ’in the Manner of an Oratorio’, in concert form.
The original cast included Elisabeth Duparc (‘La Francesina’) in the title role, John Beard as Jupiter, Esther Young as Ino and Juno and Henry Reinhold in the bass parts (although in fact Handel seems to have interchanged some of the music between singers).
