Anointing of the Sick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a communal anointing, the priest calls for anyone who believes that they would benefit from the reception of the sacrament to come forward, and those that come forward then receive the sacrament.
While he does this, he says, "Through this Holy Anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit." He then uses the consecrated oil to trace a cross on a person's palms.
Eastern Orthodoxy, and Oriental Orthodoxy, and is also practiced in some Protestant churches.

The Second Anointing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints do not consider the Second Anointing to be essential for salvation.
In Mormonism, the Second Anointing, also known historically and in Mormon scripture as the "fulness of the priesthood," is a very sacred and obscure ordinance usually conducted in

 Anointing and Holy Spirit Baptism
When God had the priesthood anointed with oil by Moses, and then other priests anointed by the priesthood, it anticipated the day in which God would anoint (separate, consecrate, and empower) to himself a "royal priesthood" by means of the outpouring of the Holy Ghost.
Since we have determined that God uses an anointing to covey power, and know from Bible doctrine that the power which God provides to transform humanity (as illustrated in the sublime example, Jesus) is the Holy Ghost, we can say assuredly, God anoints with the Holy Spirit.
Anointing is a method of blessing to change mankind by causing his destiny, being and experience to come miraculously in touch with the divine.

James 5:14 and the Reformed Faith
Second, we believe the Bible to teach that the “sign” gift of healing has ceased.
Anointing with oil is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament as a symbolic action according to which what is anointed is set apart for God’s service or blessing….
Second, just because “oil” is used in Luke’s Gospel in this way, doesn’t mean it necessarily means this in James.

The sacrament of anointing is a sacrament of the Church.
Sick children are to be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason; in case of doubt of the child’s use of reason, the sacrament is conferred.
We are saved through the Church not by some other means.

Paul VI  Anointing of the Sick
The Catholic Church professes and teaches that the Sacred Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven Sacraments of the New Testament, that it was instituted by Christ and that it is "alluded to in Mark (Mk.
From ancient times testimonies of the Anointing of the Sick are found in the Church's Tradition, particularly her liturgical Tradition, both in the East and in the West.
In the course of the centuries, in the liturgical Tradition the parts of the body of the sick person to be anointed with Holy Oil were more explicitly defined, in different ways, and there were added various formulas to accompany the anointings with prayer, which are contained in the liturgical books of various Churches.

The Sanctuary Chapter 1 - The Annointing of Daniel
The time of Christ’s coming, His anointing by the Holy Spirit, His death, and the giving of the gospel to the Gentiles, were definitely pointed out.
This signified that the 1st phase of the anointing pertained to the high priest as an individual alone, and has its fulfillment in Christ when He was baptized by John the Baptist in the river Jordan.
The only time the “holy of holies” of the earthly sanctuary was anointed was when it was dedicated.

A response to Gordon Fee’s Book Gospel and Spirit, Issues in New Testament Hermeneutics, especially as it relates to ...
Stronstad points out that the parallelism between Jesus’ anointing at Jordan and the disciples’ receiving of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost implies the functional equivalence of the Spirit in the two events—that is, for charismatic empowerment in mission.
The striking parallels between Jesus’ pneumatic anointing at the Jordan and that of the disciples at Pentecost suggest that Luke interpreted the latter event in light of the former: Pentecost was for the disciples what the Jordan was for Jesus.
According to this belief, the righteousness fulfilled anticipated the Scripture, "whoever believes and is baptized will be saved." We do not have this belief by Scripture, but by logical deduction from Scripture.

 LDS Endowment
The idea that the anointing described in the Gospels is an ordinance meant to be repeated by others probably grows out of Jesus' statement about the woman being memorialized wherever the gospel is preached.
The Gospels present the woman's anointing of Jesus as a prophetic gesture attesting to his immanent death.
When nineteenth-century LDS authorities preached that Jesus and Mary of Bethany were husband and wife, they were no doubt reading John 12:1-8 as a literal description of Jesus' second anointing.

The Hundredfold Anointing - Reaching Higher Ministries
Anointed as future king, he had a great potential, although the position was not attained for some time.
You are in your "Bible School." Your hunger and thirst for more of God makes you willing, not only to closely associate yourself with anointed people such as apostles, prophets, pastors, evangelists, teachers and others.
The prophet Samuel first anointed David when the future king was a lad.

 book2a2
Against the theory held by the Calvinists let us place the scriptural doctrine of a second crisis, in which entire sanctification is realized in one dramatic baptism of the Holy Ghost and of power that destroys all the remains of carnality and fills the believer with all the fullness of God.
The same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie" (I John 2:20, 27).
Remembering that modern people began professing this second crisis under the preaching of the Wesleys far back in the eighteenth century, it is evident that literally millions of earnest, sincere Christians have devoutly believed that by faith they entered into a second rest after regeneration.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Book of Common Prayer
In 1549 the anointing with chrism was omitted, but the prayer that the Holy Ghost might come down upon those about to be confirmed was retained, and they were signed with the sign of the cross on their forehead.
In the First Prayer Book the Communion service is styled "'The Supper of the Lord and the Holy Communion, commonly called the Mass"; in the Second, and also in the present book, "The Order for the Administration of the Lord's Supper, or the Holy Communion".
Accordingly in 1552 a second Book of Common Prayer was published, in which everything in the First Book which had been fixed upon by Gardiner is evidence that the new liturgy did not reject the old beliefs and everything which Bucers had objected to was in the revision carefully swept away and altered.

 Two witnesses
If you’re a believer than you’re anointed, and you’re anointed because you’re in Christ, and Christ is in you — you’re in the anointed and the anointing is in you.
As the father of the anointing the Holy Spirit uses the water of the word as well as the blood of Jesus to witness to the anointing.
The Angel's second answer is "These are the two anointed ones." (4:14) A literal rendering of the phrase “anointed ones” is "sons of oil".

But that led to a second anointing, and the second anointing was when Judah, the tribe of Judah, recognized him as King.
The first place David was anointed wasn't on top of Mt. Zion, it wasn't before all the priests, it wasn't before all the tribes, it wasn't in Judah.

Catechism of the Catholic Church - PART 2 SECTION 2 CHAPTER 1 ARTICLE 2
The first anointing of the neophyte on coming out of the baptismal bath was performed by the priest; it was completed by a second anointing on the forehead of the newly baptized by the bishop.
The first anointing with sacred chrism, by the priest, has remained attached to the baptismal rite; it signifies the participation of the one baptized in the prophetic, priestly, and kingly offices of Christ.
By Confirmation Christians, that is, those who are anointed, share more completely in the mission of Jesus Christ and the fullness of the Holy Spirit with which he is filled, so that their lives may give off "the aroma of Christ."

 Mormon Temples and Temple Rituals
The man is anointed as "priest and king" (the wife is anointed "priestess and queen") and their "calling and election [to exaltation] is made sure." Part of the ceremony is performed by the couple in private in their own home, following instructions given during the temple ceremony, and includes the ceremonial washing of feet.
The washing and anointing ceremony is an individual ritual, but the second part is a group ritual; that is, a group of Mormons (a "company") goes through the ceremony at the same time together.
The officiator makes the sign of the Second Token of the Aaronic Priesthood, and, while holding his arms in that position (a shoulder-high elbow rest is conveniently provided for him at the altar, in case he should be inspired by the Spirit to make the prayer overly long), he offers an impromptu prayer.

Catholic Update - Anointing the Sick by Thomas Richstatter, O.F.M., Th.D.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that when the sick are anointed they should be "assisted by their pastor and the whole ecclesial community, which is invited to surround the sick in a special way through their prayers and fraternal attention" (#1516).
The Second Vatican Council has reminded us: "The purpose of the sacraments is to make people holy, to build up the Body of Christ and finally to give worship to God" ( Liturgy, #59).
There the priest lays his hands on the head of the person to be anointed, recalling Jesus' own usual manner of healing: "At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him.

(Colossians 2:9) In the anointing an individual is one with God and God is one with the individual.
Remember, "the second man is the Lord from heaven." (l Corinthians l5:47) When Jesus Christ is manifest in a living sacrifice, it is reasonable to believe he would be able to speak and to hear the Father in the throne room.
The joy of the Lord's anointed is compatable with the divine joy of the Spirit, (Galatians 5:22) for the two become one in God.

Mormon LDS ordinance of second anointing
She anointed her husband to be her king, priest.
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

So, to the present day, we have two anointings after baptism: one by the priest, and the other normally by the bishop.
MISSION APPEAL: Father Pio Atonio will be in St. Stanislaus Church today for the annual Mission Appeal on behalf of his Diocese of Kingstown.
When bishops began to cede some of their ministry to the ranks of presbyters, they desired to maintain a strong relationship with baptism.

Issue 98 - Salt Lake City Messenger
He is then anointed with oil on his head, after which he is ordained a king and a priest unto God to rule and reign in the House of Israel forever...
Today, the church leaders seem to be minimizing the importance of the second anointing and refer to it as a "special blessing" but not necessary for exaltation (godhood) (see The Mysteries of Godliness, p.165).
The couple receiving their second anointing were to go to the temple, and then dress in their temple robes.

 Anointed Prophet Priest and King!
As the anointed one (mªshiyach) of the Lord, Jesus was, is, and always will be the Prophet, the Priest, and the King.
The priests were anointed : A priest is someone who represents man to God and intercedes on man's behalf.

Such anointings only come when there is a prayerful waiting on God.
Samuel anointed David as a means of identification -- God would one day make him king over the nation of Israel.
As we begin a new year, and hopefully, a new adventure with Christ, there is a need for a fresh anointing from God so that we might undertake the tasks He has called us to with His power and strength.

 Daat Emet - Tzav
Therefore the Ramban wrote that the anointing of Aaron and his sons was after the building of the Tabernacle and the commandment about the sacrifices.
The Golden Calf and the receiving of the second set of Tablets are in chapters 32-34, even though they happened before the commandments to build the Tabernacle (see Parshat Pekudei).
Then, in chapters 35-40, the Scripture details the actual building of the Tabernacle but forgets to include there the anointing of Aaron and his sons, though that happened seven days before the Tabernacle was built.

The Second Vatican Council called for the restoration of the process of initiation for adults joining the Church.
In the Eastern churches, a single anointing (chrismation) sealed the newly baptized with the Gift of the Spirit.
This (along with the revised Rite of Confirmation itself) has led to a greater awareness of Confirmation as a sacrament which introduces one into the Church.

PLURAL MARRIAGES AFTER THE 1890 MANIFESTO
At Juarez Stake Conference a few days later, Apostle Woodruff prophesied that polygamous children would always be born in the Church until the second coming of Jesus Christ.
There, sitting in front of Cowley, who was fighting to keep his membership in the Church, was one of the Apostles he had performed a marriage for, after the second Manifesto.
He then explained his vote by saying that, "The responsibility does not lie upon me, I am only following what the Presidency has requested." And then he proposed to show what his real feelings were right after this he proposed to a relative of his cousin, Reed Smoot.

It might also be useful to offer some presentations on the church's current approach to anointing, to infant baptism, to medical-moral questions, and to other issues these professionals encounter in their work.
Their power and effectiveness are either heightened or limited by the extent and richness of the parish's overall efforts to includ the sick as vital members of community life and to show the love of Christ to them.
These three different names on rituals for the same sacrament reflect a radical change in the church's approach to its members who are sick.
