He was the son of the Rishi Parasara by a nymph named Satyavati, who, although she had given birth to a son, remained a virgin.
She bore him two sons, the elder of whom, Chitrangada, succeeded to the throne, but was soon killed in battle of a Gandharva king who bore the same name.
There was a king, a descendant of Bharata, named Santanu, who had a son called Santavana, better known as Bhishma.

Mahabharata: The Greatest Spiritual Epic Of All Time by Krishna Dharma
Satyavati now recalled that when Devavrata made that vow, flowers had rained from the sky and a thunderous voice had echoed from the heavens: ?From this day his name shall be Bhishma, one of a terrible vow.?
Satyavati too had pined for many days, praying to the gods to arrange her union with the king.
Raising his hand in blessing as Bhishma stood up, the sage replied to Satyavati, ?The queen will bear a son who will be as strong as ten thousand elephants.

Satyavati's father then agreed to the marriage and Bhishma along with Satyavati returned to the palace and told the King about all that had happened.Shantanu was overjoyed on hearing the news but was also greatly saddened. He understood what a great sacrifice his son had made by taking such an oath.
Although Satyavati's father had full faith in Devavrata, he was concerned about any sons that Devavrata would have in the future and their possible claim to the throne.
Devavrata there and then made a terrible vow that he will never marry so that such a situation would never arise. The heavens and the earth trembled at the utterance of his oath and the sounds of "Bhishma","Bhishma" was heard echoing from both the heavens and the earth. From this day on,Devavrata became known as Bhishma.

 Bhishma - Indian Mythology
Satyavati said, "It would be best if you went to this Swayamvara and espoused the cause of my son.
At this time the sons of Satyavati were mere children and therefore, Satyavati ruled as regent in their stead.
His daughter Satyavati was at home, and she received the king.

The weeping Satyavati tried to make Bhishma do as she wished, but he was firm and would not break his vow.
The answer he made to Satyavati shows us what kind of men and women we should try to be, so that India may be great among the nations of the world.
We have also read in the story of the "Obedience of Ramachandra," how the King Dasharatha sent Rama into exile because he had given his word to Kaikeyi to give her whatever boon she might ask.

Santanu was thus able to marry Satyavati, and in return gave Bhisma the boon that he could die according to his own desire.
Mother Satyavati was doubly distressed, because the death of her sons left the dynasty with no heir.
When Prince Bhisma heard about this, he wanted to fulfil his father's desire, so he took a great vow to remain a lifelong brahmacari, to ensure that Satyavati's son would indeed succeed the kingdom.

Satyavati - Grandmother of Pandu and Dhritharashtra - Indian Mythology
Satyavati tried to persuade Bhishma to renounce his vow of celibacy, but he steadfastly refused to do so.
His son however, after finding out the cause for his father's sorrow, met the chief-fisherman and renounced his claim to the throne and also took a vow of celibacy, so that his children might not pose a thread to Satyavati's children.
For this terrible vow, he became known as Bhishma from that point onwards.

 A 'Made to Satisfaction Goddess'
Satyavati stands in the center of the whirling dancers and leads them in the first of the film's three catchy bhajans or devotional hymns, Main to arti utaru, "I perform Mother Santoshi's arti"-referring to ceremonial worship with a tray bearing lamps, flowers, and incense.
Satyavati appears in different saris at successive temples, and she and Birju gaze reverently at each image of the Mother, then turn to look adoringly at one another.
In a dream, Satyavati is visited by the three goddesses, who order her to stop worshiping Santoshi Ma and to venerate them alone.

Pure and sinless as Satyavati was, the saint had a revelation that she could mother a great child who would give mankind a spiritual Superman (Atimanas).
Any tender princess who had lived all her life in the luxury of the royal palace, fragile and full of fragrance would die of fright and nightmare if an ugly and frightening person like him were to come so close to her especially not on personal aspiration but on the order of the commanding queen.
Her son would achieve fame in near and far lands for a long time to come and she would also attain glory.

It was this great renunciation, landed by the gods that won him the name Bhishma.

In addition, till my last breath, I promise that I shall be loyal to the throne of Hastinapur whosoever occupies it." Thus indirectly Bhishma assured the fisher-woman that her son would be accepted as the future king of Hastinapur.

 Caste System and Casteism
In the Mahabharata, Satyavati (a Shudra-girl whose father was a fisherman), when presented with a marriage proposal from king Shantanu, married him only after he accepted her pre-nuptial agreement.
In one of the stories from the Ramayana, Rishi Viswamitra is said to have conducted Yajna (worship) at which the officiating priest was a once Kshatriya and the Yajamaan (worshipper) a Chandaal.
Note also that, in addition to the weddings involving same type of families, the marriages among people from vastly different backgrounds also frequently took place (as in the case of Satyavati and Shantanu) and the society posed no restrictions.

Desire Under the Kalpataru by Pradip Bhattacharya
The Kalpataru grants this wish through what becomes renowned as the most terrifying of all vows: Devavrata becomes Bhishma (one who has taken the vow of celibacy) so that Satyavati's children alone succeed to Santanu's throne.
Bhishma stonily refuses to break his vow and father progeny on the widows of Vicitravirya by following the custom of niyoga (sexual union with another's wife).
After Santanu met her, the desire of her father (or foster-father, if we accept the story that king Uparicara Vasu of Cedi was her real father) is that through her he should be the dynast of Hastinapura.

Ved Vyas is the producer as well as the protector of the scriptures in this age.

His mother’s name was Satyavati so he was called Satyavati-sut; he lived in Vadri- ban in the Himalayas near Badrikashram so he was called Vadrayan; for studying convenience he divided the Vedas into four sections ( vyas means to divide) so he was called Vyas or Ved Vyas; and his first name was Krishn Dwaipayan.

There was yet another, which shows what a ravishing beauty she must have been.
Grievously upset by the death of his son Shuka, Vyasa returned to his birthplace in search of his mother, found out from the fishermen that she was now queen and, to be near her, settled on the banks of the Sarasvati.
In VI.24.15 Vyasa laments that immediately after birth he was abandoned by his mother and attributes his survival to chance (in this, too, Kunti parallels Satyavati, both abandoning their pre-marital first-born to fate).

In a rather melodramatic finale, the fury of Santoshi makes the other three Goddesses see sense and Satyavati is applauded for her undaunted devotion.
And that’s exactly what rankles the minds of those who envy this Goddess — particularly the wives of the three superpowers, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.
