Sanctification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The concept of sanctification is widespread among religions, but is perhaps especially common among the various branches of the Christian religion.
Sanctification or in its verb form, sanctify, literally means to set apart for special use or purpose, that is to make holy or sacred (compare Latin sanctus 'holy').
In the Protestant churches sanctification is widely viewed as the second stage in the Christian's walk with Christ, the first being justification(used here as salvation) and the third being glorification.

 Sanctification
In the apostolic church, the essence of sanctification was a Christlike purity; in the patristic church, withdrawal from the contaminations of society.
Sanctification is the sustaining and developing work of the Holy Spirit, bringing all the faculties of the soul more and more perfectly under the purifying and regulating principle of spiritual life.
The Greek Orthodox Church preserved the ascetic view of sanctification as self denial, nourished by the church and sacraments.

 SANCTIFICATION II
Sanctification is not simply the keeping of spiritual disciplines (e.g., the number of chapters read, verses memorized, prayers recited, church services attended, fasting, etc.).
Sanctification or holiness cannot be claimed simply because one has received a supernatural revelation, mystical insight, or spiritual gift.
The pursuit of sanctification or holiness is a divine command -- not a human option.

 SANCTIFICATION I
Sanctification begins with conversion, must be lived by faith, guided by the Scripture, empowered by the Spirit for enablement and is based in the death and resurrection of Christ.
Sanctification is obeying by faith every commandment of God believing that the requisite power will be supplied no matter how one feels.
Sanctification then is the result of an active process, which begins with a subsequent dedication to Christ as Lord.

According to the Reformers, the confusion of the doctrine of sanctification and the doctrine of justification was one of the principal errors of the Church of Rome which teaches that, if we become sufficiently sanctified, we shall in the end thereby be justified.
But sanctification is doing away with our corruption and this is done not by the imputation of the righteousness of Christ to us, once for all, but by the gradual infusion of the holiness of Christ into us.

But these acts themselves avail not unto their sanctification but are only made effective through the truth of God apprehended amid such events, and received as spiritual food for the growth of the believer.

A brief summary of what is taught at Sovereign Grace Church
To summarize, I have been teaching the people of Sovereign Grace Church that sanctification, as justification, is entirely due to the grace of God and is, in its every aspect, entirely attributable to the work of the Spirit of God in the life of the believer.
If sanctification could be said to require even the slightest participation or cooperation from us, then all the glory for sanctification would not belong to God, and we could claim some glory for ourselves.
The glory in our lives which reveals the work of God in our sanctification is a reflected glory: "And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit" (II Corinthians 3:18).

 10 Teachings - Chapter 7
The necessity of sanctification is declared in words of the Old Testament: "I am the Lord your God...be holy, for I am holy" (Leviticus 11:44).
If the necessity of sanctification roots in the holiness of God, it grows in the realization of the unholiness of man. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are an ever increasing portrayal of man’s deep-dyed lack of holiness.
Two things may be said about the method of sanctification: first, there must be a radical break or reorientation in man’s nature that puts him on the road to holiness; second, there must be a continuing looking to the Lord for growth in righteousness thereafter.

 Sanctification, by Abraham Kuyper
And the result was that this so-called sanctification led to a weakening of the faith, to a considering of purity of doctrine as immaterial; until finally it assumed a hostile attitude toward the mysteries of the truth.
Hence sanctification must be preached once again as a doctrine; it must be confessed, examined, and studied as a doctrine; to be followed by an appropriate application like the preaching of any other doctrine; and godliness, spiritual life, and good works will be the result.
And this is true of every mystery, as our confession of the Holy Trinity shows, which says of this deepest and most incomprehensible dogma: "That God's children know this as well from the testimonies of Holy Writ as from the operations of the divine Persons, and chiefly by those we feel in ourselves" (art.

It consists fundamentally and primarily in a divine operation in the soul, whereby the holy disposition born in regeneration is strengthened and its holy exercises are increased.
In the historical unfolding of the doctrine of sanctification, the Church concerned itself primarily with three problems: (a) the relation of the grace of God in sanctification to faith; (b) the relation of sanctification to justification; and (c) the degree of sanctification in this present life.
Sanctification takes place partly in the subconscious life, and as such is an immediate operation of the Holy Spirit; but also partly in the conscious life, and then depends on the use of certain means, such as the constant exercise of faith, the study of God's Word, prayer, and association with other believers.
