Samatha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For Buddhists, it is commonly practiced as a prelude to and in conjunction with Vipassanā meditation (insight meditation) which focus on Buddhist dharma.
Samatha (Pāli; Sanskrit: śamatha), "Tranquility" or "concentration" meditation.
Therefore, meditation from other religious traditions are sometimes refered as a variation of samatha meditation differing in the focus of concentration such as as breathing, scriptual passage, mantra, religious picture, a rock, body (as a representation of death) and so on.

 Samatha-vipassana
The cleavage that has grown between samatha and vipassana in Buddhist theory of soteriology and meditative practice is one that has stricken the very proponents of various meditation methods, (such as jhana or sati) with tribal zeal and factionalist impulse.
Samatha and vipassana are ingredient to all Buddhist meditation practices, however, divergences in opinions arise when one approach is given primacy over the other.
Gethin relates of a method of meditation that requires samatha at the outset and then develops insight; eventually, the intellectual effort which insight meditation requires incurs an intuitive serenity that is akin to that of samatha, thus coming full circle back to quiescence (188).

 One Tool Among Many
Other systems of practice pre-dating the Buddha also taught samatha, but the Buddha was the first to discover and teach vipassana.
Although some Buddhist meditators may practice samatha meditation before turning to vipassana, samatha practice is not really necessary for the pursuit of Awakening.
What is distinctly Buddhist is (1) the extent to which both samatha and vipassana are developed; and (2) the way they are developed — i.e., the line of questioning used to foster them; and (3) the way they are combined with an arsenal of meditative tools to bring the mind to total release.

In the development of samatha there must be mahå-kusala citta accompanied by paññå which attains calm by meditation on one of the forty meditation subjects of samatha.
Before the Buddha’s enlightenment there were people who accomplished the development of samatha to the highest degree of arúpa-jhåna, the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and who could train themselves to attain supranatural powers, such as the divine eye, the divine ear, the remembrance of former lives and miraculous powers.

I find it useful to categorize scholars who have written on the relationship between vipassan&; and samatha into two groups: one group that considers vipassan&; to be essential and samatha to be inessential in the pursuit of nirvana, and a second group that views both samatha and vipassan&; to be essential for Buddhist soteriology.
The states or dispositions cultivated through the Divine Abidings in samatha meditation also occur in waking consciousness in the course of daily life—they are not exclusive to meditation or to the meditator.
Thus, samatha is considered to be inessential for nirvana.
