Sacred Groves and Sacred Trees of Uttara Kannada
Their blend of pre-Vedic paganism with faith in the supreme gods of Hinduism was often followed by the worship of anthropomorphic deities and temple construction with certain adverse consequences for the maintenance of the once luxuriant sacred groves.
Due mainly to the rise of dogmatic religions like Christianity and Islam, which advocated faith in one god and were explicitly for the eradication of ‘pagan’ practices, the tradition of maintaining sacred groves and sacred trees vanished from most countries.
Everywhere we find sacred groves, the abode of equally indeterminate beings, who are represented by no symbols and of whose form and functions no one can give an intelligible account, which have not yet been clothed with individual attributes; they linger on as survivals of the impersonal stage of early religion.

Sacred Places: Trees and the Sacred
The Bodhi or Bo (Enlightenment) tree is now the centre of a major Buddhist sacred shrine known as Bodh Gaya.
Especially sacred is the sakaki, a branch from which stuck upright in the ground is represented by the shin-no-mihashira, or sacred central post, over and around which the wooden Shrines at Ise are built.
It was under a pipal tree that Siddhartha Gautama (born 566 BCE) meditated until he attained enlightenment (Nirvana) and became the Buddha.

Solar Myths, Tree Spirits, and Totems
Again, when Hyrnetho, the daughter of Temenus, king of Argos, and wife of Diphontes, died, her husband took up her dead body and brought it to the spot which was afterwards called Hyrnethium, and they made a shrine for her and bestowed honours upon her.
These were not to strengthen the spirit of a supreme god who dwelt in the trees, but they were to appease the spirits of the king's ancestors who lay buried there, and who had to be propitiated with constant draughts of human blood.
If the suppliant can reach the tomb or sacred spot wherein the soul of the dead hero or dead chief is supposed to dwell, he remains in safety until he be tried or otherwise disposed of.

 My Sacred Grove
This Sacred Grove is totally unique and aside from being the first in North America, it is the only one in use in the entire world.
There is a belief that trees are sacred and a source of wisdom and life.

 Sacred Grove Academy
Sacred Grove Academy was formed by Church of the Spiral Tree, a legally incorporated tax-exempt pagan church (Section 501(a) organization under 501(c)(3)), in order to serve Pagan families in Alabama who want to homeschool their children, but do not wish to do so under the auspices of a Christian or secular cover school.
Families participating in Sacred Grove Academy are free to subscribe to whatever faith they so desire, without repercussion on their decision to homeschool.
You do not have to inform the previous school district that you have moved, but you do need to let the new one know that you are enrolled in a church school; otherwise you will be subject to truancy laws.

The Veil of Isis or Mysteries of the Druids
With these ablutions, sacred as those of the Musselmen, were mingled religious ceremonies with a view to remind them of the presence of that God who alone could relieve them from their infirmities.
The sacred festivals and mysteries which they had received from the Egyptians, and for which the women had been wont to prepare themselves by continence, and the men by fasting, were now mere vehicles for depravities of the lowest kind.
It was their province to sing the praises of horses in the warrior's feasts, to chant the sacred hymns like the musician's among the Levites, and to register genealogies and historical events.

 NEMETON GROVES
Strabo records the name of the meeting-place of the council of the Galatians in Asia Minor as Drunemeton, the sacred oak-grove, and Fortunatus writes in the sixth century A.D. of a place Vernemet[on] 'which in the Gaulish language means the great shrine' (using here the word fanum).
"There is a Gallo-Brittonic word nemeton which is used for a shrine or sanctuary in a sense that implies a sacred grove or clearing in a wood.
The Celtic word for a grove of trees was llannerch, from which interestingly, the late-Celtic word llann 'church' is derived.

 Sacred Grove
Visitors of the Sacred Grove are asked to enjoy the grove in reverence and take only the Spirit with them, preserving the Grove.
In response to his prayer, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph and directed him to join no church that was then established, but rather to wait for the restoration of Christ's Church.

THE SACRED GROVE: ROOTS OF OUR CULTURE
In contrast to Lucan's grove-of-horrors, Tacitus did grudgingly concede: "The grove is the centre of their whole religion.
At Upsala, the old religious capital of Sweden, there was a sacred grove in which every tree was regarded as divine.
In the best tradition of the early Christian Church, the new religion was routinely grafted onto pre-existing rootstock, while the churches quite literally, built on the energies of place.

The council consists of seven officers: a chosen chief, high priest or priestess, magister, scribe, purse-warden, bard and sword-bearer.
Members meet regularly, usually on the closest Sunday evenings to full moons (for esbat ritual), to new moons (for council meetings and tutorials) and to the eight Sabbats (for celebration).

 Plant A Sacred Grove
We were planting what was probably the first Sacred Grove in honour of the Old Gods on the Sussex Downs for hundreds of years, maybe over 1000 years!
The Spirits spoke no words, but merely banged the drums to draw the attention of the people, who then followed them into the woods, and then into the Grove.
At 12.30pm, my wife, Karena, and Barry, one of her Coveners, cast the Ritual Circle.

Gwyddon of Wales - Dynion Mwyn - Welsh witchcraft
There is a city sacred to the same god, most of the inhabitants of which are harpers, who continually play upon their harps in the temple and sing hymns to the god, extolling his actions.
Students may not enter this sacred place, unless they show unmistakable signs of past memory, a genuine mystical drive, and are willing to undertake the tests that will force him or her to finally disclose that which is most secret to themselves.

San Francisco Shamans: The Sacred Groves
In Druid tradition, and most ancient shamanistic traditions, the deepest spiritual work is always done outside in a grove of trees, with the stars and moon above.

Isis Books Pagan Celtic Article: Nemeton, Celtic Sacred Space
As threes were sacred to the Celts, nemetons, being threed, were deeply revered.
It is also an intersection; a place where the human world is trisected by the divine milieu and also by the Otherworld; thus it is tripartite.
This connection with a sacred place will also nurture your awareness of presences; from elemental spirits to discarnate souls to divine beings and emissaries.

 CELTIC DRUIDISM
The Christian Church adsorbed much of Celtic religion: many Pagan Gods and Goddesses became Christian saints; sacred springs and wells were preserved and associated with saints; many Pagan temple sites became the location of cathedrals.
The sacred ownership of the various Pagan holy sites were simply translated from Goddess Brigid to St. Bridget after the area was Christianized.
Baptism : There is some evidence that the Celts had a baptism initiation ceremony similar to those found in Buddhist, Christian, Essene, Hindu, Islamic, and Jainist sacred texts.

 Serpentina - Sacred Sites
We have taken up the ancient covenant and have seen salmon spawning in the river at The Sacred Grove.
We bring further honor and purpose to this place by dedicating it in the name of women, —as a place where the deep sacred can arise in all.
The vision is to return the land to the land as an act of healing and reconciliation with nature and to create a sanctuary space where women and their allies can hear the wisdom of the ancient forest.

 The SACRED GROVE Project
This type of grove is a silent place sought by respectful individuals or small groups as a retreat for meditation, contemplation, prayer or ceremony.
Since trees have always played a tremendously important role in the cultural and spiritual evolution of the various civilizations we can honour this by inviting representatives from all different faiths and spiritual paths to plant a sacred tree and, if they wish, also hallow a shrine underneath that tree.
We are considering three different types of 21st-century Sacred Groves (see below) but they all have in common that the trees are regarded as dignified beings without having to serve human needs to increase their ‘value’.

 The Sacred Sycamore
And the reason they brought back the seeds of the Sycamore, rather than the Olive or the Palm was that the Sycamore was considered sacred.
That these Sycamores were planted, there is no doubt, The usual life span is about 250 to 300 years and it is my belief that this may be the second or even third planting.
Those people who love trees, all trees, believe that if a tree is introduced and can reproduce then claim it as native and love it.

Nemain had been associated with the British goddess Nemetona, the goddess of the sacred grove.

St Brigid was the patron saint of Ireland, and was the abbess of the nunnery of Kildare, which she had found.

Isis Books Pagan Celtic Article: Reverencing the Dead at Samhain
Always remember, when visiting a graveyard, that you are on sacred ground, and that respect must always be paid to the dead, or else retribution may come.
It is a custom among Celtic Pagans today to visit graveyards sometime before dusk on 31 October, in order to reverence the dead and get into the mood to be haunted.
Many of these ancient groves became Christian graveyards in later centuries.

 Sacred Grove News
The Sacred Grove is our secret place where we can find peace, and discover a deeper connection with the Natural World.
Our purpose is still to plant trees and new sacred places across the globe, and now, with this added dynamic, we can also add to that our knowledge of Nature and the sacred wild places of the World.
As some of you know, the Sacred Grove Project began in 1988 as the ‘Sacred Grove Planting Programme’, then in 1998 it transformed into '2000 Groves for the Year 2000', quite rightly taking on a part of the personality of the facilitator.
