Rudolf Steiner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steiner periodically affirmed that gaining access to the unusual forms of consciousness supposedly embodied in some of his works was not a matter of believing in or having faith in whatever he chose to say about spiritual beings.
Steiner made it clear, however, that the resulting movement for the renewal of Christianity, which became known as The Christian Community, was a personal gesture of help to a deserving cause.
The high regard in which Steiner is held within the Anthroposopical movement, which sees his teaching as foundational, has prompted some critics to see Steiner as a founder of a religion, not as a philosopher in the usual sense of the word.

Rudolf Steiner was also led to recognize the new presence and activity of the Christ.
Steiner saw this scientific era, even in its most materialistic aspects, as an essential phase in the spiritual education of humanity.
Steiner recognized that the meaning of that turning point in time transcends all differences of religion, race, or nation and has consequences for all of humanity.

 Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925),anthroposophy, Waldorf Schools
Steiner thought of his Anthroposophy as a "spiritual science." Convinced that reality is essentially spiritual, he wanted to train people to overcome the material world and learn to comprehend the spiritual world by the higher, spiritual self.
Steiner was especially attracted to two theosophical notions: (1) There is a special spiritual consciousness that provides direct access to higher spiritual truths; (2) Spiritual evolution is hindered by being mired in the material world.
Steiner designed the curriculum of his schools around notions that he apparently got by special spiritual insight into the nature of Nature and the nature of children.

 Steiner, Rudolf
Steiner himself composed a specific form of liturgy for the church, called "The Act of Consecration of Man," but emphasized that the primary spiritual path for modern humanity should be Spiritual Science or Anthroposophy.
Steiner also delivered more than a dozen lecture series on the spiritual and esoteric revelations that he gleamed from the Christian scriptures.
Steiner, when fifteen, began learning the secret occult lore of plants from Felix Korgutski who eventually introduced him to an adept that was referred to as "the Master," who spiritually initiated him.

 Steiner Education
Rudolf Steiner split with the English members of the Theosophical society over their desire to bring the young Krishnamurti to the West and to promote him as a spiritual leader.
The end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century was a time when all of the sciences were developing rapidly and Rudolf Steiner was determined that they should be based on spiritual, as opposed to material, truths.
His interest in spiritual matters led him to become involved with the Theosophical Society of London, which was trying to form a bridge between the spiritualism of the East and the Christian values of Europe.

Thus Steiner was led to develop a theory of knowledge out of his own striving after truth, one which took its start from a direct experience of the spiritual nature of thinking.
In Goethe he recognized one who had been able to perceive the spiritual in nature, even though he had not carried this as far as a direct perception of the spirit.
The range of his contribution to modern thought can be seen in The Faithful Thinker, edited by A. Harwood (1961).

Waldorf answers - Who was Rudolf Steiner?
Based on lectures that he was invited to hold in the Theosophical Library of Count and Countess Brockdorff in 1901/1902, Rudolf Steiner developed in an initial form, during the following decade, what he named an "anthroposophical spiritual science", based on the idealistic tradition in philosophy, rooted in the thinking of Aristotle, Plato, and Thomas Aquinas.
In 1923/1924, Rudolf Steiner initiated the foundation of, and started to build a general Anthroposophical Society and a School of Spiritual Science.
The step from traditional scholar to the development and public presentation of spiritual research shocked many of those who up to that time had come to know him as a widely respected scholar and cultural personality.

As a religion, rather than a spiritual reality itself, Christendom had yet to rise to that level.
That Christendom has been slow to embrace it, aside from the reasons suggested above, is perhaps pointed to by a two-lecture cycle he gave in Munich in 1907 entitled, Christianity Began as a Religion but is Greater than all Religions (including, one must conclude, what presumes to call itself Christianity).
