Creation - Studies in Creationism and Flood Geology
In "A Diluviological Treatise on the Stratigraphic Separation of Fossils" (Creation Research Society Quarterly 20(3)133-185; December 1983), I examine, in great detail, how one flood accounts for the fact that different fossils are found in different layers of rock.
In "A Diluvian Interpretation of Ancient Cyclic Sedimentation" (Creation Research Society Quarterly, 14(4)189-208; March 1978), I show how one flood explains the fact that most of the world's coal deposits occur in sandwich-like layers interbedded with rock, and that standard evolutionary geology has a difficult time explaining this.

 STRATEXP.HTM
Geology students are always taught in introductory Earth Science and geology that sedimentary rock layers always started horizontal and then were tilted after they formed, to form sloped strata as we see today.
The following is my attempt to comment on what Berthault's experiments show and what their significance may be for a creationist view of geology.
This short program is a well produced presentation of the essence of the experiments and Berthault's views on the significance of these experiments for Geology and specifically the discipline of Geology known as stratigraphy.

 Creationist Geology Links
Robert Gentry's work showed that the Earth's granite was never in a molten condition, because polonium halos survive only in solid rock and the half-life of polonium is much too short to survive a multimillion-year cooling time.
The Flood, the deluge of the Scriptual Genesis record.
If true, it is clear evidence for creation and a young earth.

 Delphi
After investigating the site, archeologists were convinced that these vapours are only a myth, as no evidence for them could be found, and —-so the then standard opinion in geology— gaseous emissions from rock only occur in conjunction with volcanic activity.
Sibylline Rock, breathing in vapors from the ground
Later, "Sibyl" became a title given to whichever priestess manned the oracle at the time.

 Geology: determining rock age
The method was developed immediately following World War II by Willard F. Libby and coworkers, and has provided age determinations in archaeology, geology, geophysics and other branches of science.
But to answer your question more directly, sand, dust, limestone, etc. are laid down on top of each other and with time, the deposits compress and is lithified into rock.
In a vertical slice of rock that has not been faulted or folded, the lowest rock is the oldest, and the highest rock is the youngest.

Rocks--Earth Science lesson plan (grades 6-8)--DiscoverySchool.com
Knows processes involved in the rock cycle (e.g., old rocks at the surface gradually weather and form sediments that are buried, then compacted, heated, and often recrystallized into new rock; this new rock is eventually brought to the surface by the forces that drive plate motions, and the rock cycle continues).
Encourage students to do research about sedimentary rock and the rock cycle before they begin their stories, to be sure they do not convey any incorrect information to younger readers.
Have students investigate what types of rocks and rock formations are common in their home region.

In general the bed rock geology of the West Coast consists of five distinct zones.
The geology (lithology) variable identifies generalized rock type and is present for all coastal grid cells and line segments within this data base.
The geology data were derived from state geologic maps ranging in scale from 1:250,000 to 1:1,000,000 with publication dates from 1968 to 1992 (maps used are listed in Section 13.2).

Intrusion (geology) - encyclopedia article about Intrusion (geology).
sill In geology, a sill is a tabular, often horizontal mass of igneous rock that has been intruded laterally between older layers of sedimentary rock, beds of volcanic lava or tuff, or even along the direction of foliation in metamorphic rock.
In geology Geology (from Greek γη- ( ge-, "the earth") and λογος( logos, "word", "reason")) is the science and study of the Earth, its composition, structure, physical properties, history, and the processes that shape it.
Diapir is the more general term for intrusions that includes both igneous and non-igneous structures, such as salt domes A salt dome is formed when a thick bed of evaporite minerals (mainly salt, or halite) found at depth intrudes vertically into surrounding rock strata, forming a diapir.

 Careers
Sedimentary rocks are composed of bits and pieces of geological material derived from either pre-existing rock sources like mountains, or through chemical and biochemical processes in oceans and lakes (salt flats, reefs, etc.).
Sedimentary geologists also examine the natural resources that are contained within sedimentary rock such as oil, natural gas, and a variety of economic products ranging from halite (salt) to limestone (for cement).
:Sedimentary geology is the study of sedimentary rocks, one of three major rock groups that are distinguished by geologists (the other two rock groups are igneous and metamorphic).

The Rock Mechanics Laboratory at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the Silesian University of Technology provides a broad spectrum of research, testing, and teaching facilities and services.
The main purpose of these studies is to gain a better knowledge of the mechanical material properties and a deeper understanding of the response of rock to the forces and strains resulting from its physical environment underground.
