Ritual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although ritual is often used in context with worship performed in a church, the actual relationship between any religion's doctrine and its ritual(s) can vary considerably from religion to religion.
A ritual is a set of actions, performed mainly for their symbolic value, which is prescribed by a religion or by the traditions of a community.
Ritual often have a close connection with reverence, thus a ritual in many cases expresses reverence for a deity.

RITUAL - LoveToKnow Article on RITUAL
ritus, a custom, especially a religious rite or custom), a term of religion, which may be defined as the routine of worship.
Even in the highest religions, where orthodoxy is the main requirement, and ritual is held merely to symbolize dogma, there is a remarkable rigidity about the dogma that is doubtless in large part due to its association with ritual forms many of them bearing the most primeval stamp.
Indeed, viewed in this aspect, ritual is to religion what habit is to life, and its rationale is similar, namely, that by bringing subordinate functions under an effortless rule it permits undivided attention in regard to vital issues.

 Ritual
It is perhaps an indication that the existence of ritual in spirituality is an indication that religion has lost its potency and become a manifestation of avidya.
Ritual and symbolism was apparent on many different levels and made manifest by the construction of a traditional 108-bead mala.
The ritual of standing in a circle and joining together made each participant aware that in life they are the 'bead' on many different 'malas': that the thread which links them is firmly 'tied' to the Master Bead - their inherent Buddha nature.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Ritual
When first ritual functions were written in books, the Sacramentary in the West, the Euchologion in the East contained all the priest's (and bishop's) part of whatever functions they performed, not only the holy Liturgy in the strict sense, but all other sacraments, blessings, sacramentals, and rites of every kind as well.
These should be conformable to the Motu Proprio of Pius X of 22 Nov., 1903, and the Decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites of 8 Jan., 1904.
The ceremonies also contained in the Missal (holy water, the processions of Candlemas and Palm Sunday, etc.), and the prayers also in the Breviary (the Office for the Dead) are necessarily identical with those of Paul V's Ritual; these have the absolute authority of the Missal and Breviary.
