The origins of Rinzai Zen date back to 500 BC with the birth of Sakyamuni Buddha in north-east India who is respected as the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
The Falaise Verte Zen Center is part of the Myoshin-ji branch which takes its name from its main temple built in Kyoto in the 14th century.

Having returned to Japan, he transmitted Rinzai Zen to his home-country and established the Shofuku-jiTemple in HakataTown, Fukui prefecture, the first Zen Buddhist temple in Japan.
Rinzai prospered in Japan after it was transmitted in 1191 by Eisai, and, whereas Soto-Zen was favoured by common people and farmers, Rinzai Zen was favoured by the samurai class and rulers.
This is in contrast to Rinzai Zen, which does seek Buddha-hood through the breakthrough by the the use of koans.

MBZC is a community engaged in the study and practice of Rinzai Zen Buddhism of the Nyorai-Nyoko sect of the Rinzai school, out of the Myoshin-ji Temple.
Emphasizing monasticism and meditation, there are two schools of Zen, Rinzai and Soto, Rinzai being the smaller of the two in Japan (Kapleau 1965, 344).

Zen thought was introduced to the West by the writings of D. Suzuki, and interest in the practice of Zen meditation blossomed after World War II, resulting in the establishment of Zen centers in many parts of the United States.
Japanese Zen declined in the 16th and 17th cent., but its traditional forms were revived by the great Hakuin (1686–1769), from whom all present-day Rinzai masters trace their descent.

Hakuun Yasutani was a Rinzai monk who was first shifted to a Soto monastery before meeting Sogaku Daiun Harada Roshi who initiated him to his new style of Soto/Rinzai Zen.
From the Japanese point of view, both Soto and Rinzai authorities consider this hybrid Rinzai/Soto Zen strange and impure.
Another popular figure is Taizan Maezumi who was a Soto monk who then studied in the Rinzai as well as Yasutani style.
