 Turner Chapel AME Church
Reverend Bright believes that the most challenging aspect of his work is juggling his administrative duties and being spiritually focused as the Sunday morning worship leader.
Reverend Bright completed the extension church initiative started by his predecessor.
Reverend Bright shares the vision of Pastor Marcus for a future Turner Chapel in which the Ministry of Worship is viewed as a model for other churches.

Allen replied that they could not be part of a church where they had been so "scandalously treated." He addressed St. George's Reverend McCloskey, saying, "If you deny us your name [Methodism] you cannot seal up the scripture from us, and deny us a name in heaven."
Allen recalled, "By this time the prayer was over, and we all went out of the church in a body, and they were no more plagued by us in the church."
Allen was given the responsibility of buying land for the church.

 AME Church History
When the prayer was over, the black people, led by Richard Allen and Absalom Jones, withdrew from the St. George's Church Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, William Gray and William Wilcher were appointed to find a lot to build a church where the worship of God could be carried on without interference.
Richard F. Norris, currently pastor of St. Matthew's A.M.E. Church in Philadelphia and a candidate for Bishop in the church, completed a massive 3.5 million dollar restoration of Mother Bethel in 1991.
Reverend John Dickins, pastor of St. George's, sang and prayed that the house be called "Bethel" for the gathering in of thousands of souls.

"Richard Allen was one of those believing souls, believed in God, and sonship, and freedom, who was logical and 'naïve' enough to think that Christianity was a practical way of living and reached into the sociological as well as the theological realm.
I believe Richard Allen was the first American religious leader who not only preached but sought to implement 'Brotherhood.'"
Together they formed the Free African Society which would later be organized into the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

 The Allen Legacy
Allen, who later became Bishop Richard Allen, preached in that blacksmith shop, with an anvil as his pulpit, a doctrine of self help.
In the days that were to come, Richard Allen and those few men and women founded the church that became the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
It is the mission of the Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church, Jamaica, New York, to effectively minister the Word of God to the people of God through Biblical teaching, preaching and outreach.

 History of the A.M.E. Church
Allen and the others began worshipping in a blacksmith shop.
In 1787, Reverend Richard Allen, the founder and first bishop of the A.M.E. Church, along with Absalom Jones, and a band of followers withdrew from the St. George’s Methodist Church in Philadelphia because of the “unkind treatment” and discrimination with which these worshippers of African descent faced.
They felt they no longer could worship in a congregation that would not affirm them fully as children of God with equal potential and worth.
http://www.hemingway-ame.org/amehist.htm

 Our Faith
When Richard Allen and the “faithful” few began meeting in a blacksmith shop together for prayer, worship, and encouragement, they established the “model” church that we recognize today.
Its founder and first active bishop, Richard Allen, felt that no religious sect or denomination would suit the capacity of his people as well as did Methodism with its emphasis upon the plain and simple gospel which the unlearned could understand, and its orderly system of rules and regulations which the underdeveloped needed.
Since the inception of the first African Methodist Church (A.M.E.C.), the message and purpose of the local church continues to meet the needs of God’s people.

Thus, from this humble beginning, Richard Allen and his associates set about to create a "Brotherhood of Man." This great religious body, with the blessings of God, has spread all over the world.
Church dates back to 1787, when a number of black members, led by Richard Allen, withdrew from St. George Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania because the white Christians had segregated the Blacks into the gallery of the Church and otherwise placed a "badge of inferiority" upon them.
It was during the administration of Reverend W.E. Carter, 1969-1973, that the congregation retired the debt of our present church.

 J T A M E - Bishop Richard Allen
In February 1786, Allen was appointed assistant minister at St. George’s (a Philadelphian mixed-race congregation; the first and oldest Methodist Church in the U.S.) and accepted an invitation to preach the 5:00 A.M. worship service.
The story is that Bishop Allen sent out his first preachers for a period of six months to witness and grow the A.M.E. Church.
In 1799 at age of 30, Allen was ordained a deacon, the first such in the Methodist Church by Bishop Asbury.

 Bishop Richard Allen
Born a prisoner-of-war (so-called "slave") in 1760 in Philadelphia, he went on to create one of the largest and perhaps the most prestigious religious denominations in America, the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
The African Methodist Episcopal Church was formed in 1816 when Bishop Allen called together many Black Methodist churches dissatisfied with the racist policies of the Methodist Denomination.
In 1794, Allen erected Bethel, his first of four church buildings at Sixth and Lombard Streets.

The Reverend James Lee and a group of his followers, frustrated by the fact that May Street Church continued to be controlled by White Methodists at the Bromfield Street Church, left Snowden's congregation to form the First Independent Methodist Church.
The African Methodist Episcopal Church, an all-Black branch of Methodism precipitated by Richard Allen's split from the St. George's Church in Philadelphia in 1787, was beginning to spread throughout the North.
A similar split occurred in the May Street Methodist Episcopal Church in 1833.

The powerful new insight I gained from this 2004 Christmas homily--cutting through the sappy, overused, numbing images of Christmas cheer and peace (blah, blah, blah)--was that grace is a two-way street, indifferent to our successes as well as our failures.
