Restorationism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Restorationism is an attitude that typifies a religious movement which sees itself as a rediscovery and establishment of the original form of Christianity in recent times.
Because of its divisions, errors, and compromises with the world, the corrupted church fell out of line with the church founded by Jesus.
The problem is not a matter of outward forms of doctrine and churchliness so much, as of a pattern of spirituality and authenticity.

Restorationism and the Rebirth of the Latter Rain
It exists today in a more contemporary form as "Restorationism," an eschatological reading of Scripture calling for a 'recovery' of Davidic worship, praise and service, said to have been lost to the Church between the death of the Apostles and the Dark Ages.
Close cousin to the "Latter Rain," Restorationism may be identified under a broad assortment of other names: New Kingdom Teaching, Ultimate Movement, the Praise Movement, Manifest Sons, the Melchizedek Order, the Tabernacle of David.

The genesis of many religious movements or Bible-based sects is frequently rooted in the ideal of restorationism.
In the restorationist mindset, the church fell away from the truth (apostatized) some time shortly after the death of the apostles.

 Apr 04 - Articles - The charismatic movement - a short history - 2. Restoration - Jonathan Bayes
In the late 1970s, Restorationism was intentionally different from the renewal — in that it had no interest whatever in staying within the denominations or trying to revive them.
The new church was led by Bryn Jones.
Restorationism was soon being propagated through its Bible Weeks.

 chrent » Restorationism or Revisionism?
In adapting and portraying the early church fathers to a form of protestant restorationism (not traditional protestantism) the usage of the word catholic is being blurred to mean something other than what it actually meant.
Thus can be eliminated tradition, to which a large extent was used to fight those battles, and be called innovation and invention, which is being maintained as not really catholic, but where the church departed from the faith.
Some, on reading the early church fathers, have begun calling themselves catholic, though they aren’t part of the church.

 Christian Principles Unit 2: Restorationism
Definition of Restorationism: A movement emphasizing the belief that God's miraculous working in the gospels, Acts (and Corinth?) describes the normal Christian life (individually and corporately).
We disagree with some features of restorationism and find that many in this camp have serious problems in their interpretation of scripture and practical application of scripture.
History: Three "waves" of restorationism have occurred during the 20th century; all 3 are still present today.

 Comments on: [McLaren on Restorationism]
I think that I am at heart one of those people who thinks church should be better than it is. I even see in the NT places where things weren't as good as they should be if we're living under the reign of Christ.
Not to say that is a linear and progressive process, but perhaps that is the sense in which the Kingdom of God is “forcefully advancing.”
The "I got it all figured out" attitude it is what neuters a church.

 Joseph Smith: America's Hermetic Prophet
For a decade, Brooke suggests, Smith's emergent hermetic theology was disguised under the coloring of traditional Christian restorationism and formed as new Christian church.
Gazing into his seer stone, he saw in the Book of Mormon's golden plates a of record ancient fratricidal oppositions, and a Christ who brought union.

Restorationist (Church of Christ-Elijah) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Here, it is most often used to distinguish between Latter Day Saint beliefs and other churches such as the Church of Christ which do not accept the later revelations and doctrine of Mormonism.
Restorationist is generic term describing any church or belief which originated during the Second Great Awakening early in the 19th century in the eastern United States and Canada.
Within Restorationism, the term has a more specific meaning.

One of the favourite themes of the Restorationism is getting back to the New Testament pattern of early church life.
Just because you doubt that the Restorationists have rightly understood what the New Testament pattern is, doesn't mean that there isn’t anything that needs to be restored.
This notion often comes under fire from those from other church backgrounds as being both theologically and historically naïve.

 May 04 - Articles - The charismatic movement - a short history - 3. The Vineyard - Jonathan Bayes
The enthusiastic participation of many denominational charismatic churches made it clear that Restorationism had indeed taken over.
From now on, it would work for the ‘restoration’ of the traditional denominations rather than aspiring to supplant them.
Many people who had been involved in the renewal moved into the Restorationist movement, having become disillusioned with attempts to renew denominational life — attempts that seemed to be getting nowhere.

What Does the Restoration Movement Communicate to the World? (II)
Restorationism has been rejected or redefined by by Disciple scholarship (e.g., as found in the faculties of accredited seminaries), and the notion that the New Testament is a constitution for the church is repudiated by scholars generally.
On the other hand, the nineteenth-century Disciples just as firmly believed that the end could be accomplished by no other means.
Is this kind of literalistic restorationism still valid; or are we to agree with Dr. Osborn that "the Biblical and theological scholarship of recent decades has made restorationism untenable; it has destroyed the mentality in which restorationism flourished?"

~ What Is Resorationism, And The Restoration Movement- By Robin A. Brace ~
They also claim that the Old Testament office of Prophet still exists today although they would deny that this is an Old Testament office, pointing to the 'prophets' of the New Testament such as Agabus.
The Restorationist movement claims that the office of Apostle still exists today in exactly the same powerful first century AD form which we find in the New Testament.
Three "waves" of restorationism can be detected through the 20th century, and ongoing into the 21st century, and it is probably fair to say that all 3 groups are still around.

 Eternal Damnation vs Universal Restorationism
According to Neander (vol 2, p 737), concerning the second period of the church (312AD-590AD) he states that Restorationism began to rise, "The doctrine of eternal punishment continued, as in the preceding period, to be dominate in the creed of the church.
There were no ecumenical councils or authoritative counter-statements which come out of this era as compared to those concerning the doctrine of the Trinity.

This three-part series contains a potted history of the British charismatic movement illustrating the rise of Restorationalism and the impact this has had on believers and the Church in Britain.

The Day of Pentecost in Act 2 was preceded by the ascension of Jesus in Acts 1:6-11 where the role of the coming of the Spirit was placed in eschatological perspective.
Restorationism and a premillenial eschatology are merged into Pentecostal's self-understanding of the meaning of the Pentecostal Revival.
The Acts experience was the "Former Rain" and the Pentecostal Revival came to be seen as the "Latter Rain".

He convinced me that I ought to lay my philosophy aside, and preach the gospel as the apostles preached, making their discourses a model to be accurately copied by me in all my ministrations.
This was, so far, a capital conquest, for it terminated in due time in the conviction, in my mind, that Restorationism itself, as much as I had formerly idolized it, is founded in error.
