Religious symbolism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The study of religious symbols can be either universalist —as a fundamental component of comparative religion and mythology —or in localised scope, within the confines of a religion's limits and boundaries.
A religion may view a given religious text, ritual, or work of art as a symbol of some idea or ideal that the religion finds compelling.
The usage of symbols helps create a resonant mythos that expresses the moral values of the society, the teachings of the religion, creates a sense of solidarity between religious adherents, or functions as a way to bring one to God."

 Religious Symbolism Guidelines
Certain symbols representative of the Catholic faith are present to express the faith of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, founders and sponsors of the College, and are not intended to offend or exclude others.
These recommendations and guidelines describe the places where religious and spiritual symbolism should be present and serve as guidelines for selection of religious symbolism and spiritual art.
Whenever possible, it is important that religious and spiritual art follow a theme that is consistent with the department or service which is to occupy the new space.

The History of Religions: Essays in Methodology
A study of the origin and diffusion of a symbol does not release the historian of religions from the obligation of understanding it; it is for him to restore to it all the meanings it has had during the course of its history.
The historian of religions is preoccupied uniquely with religious symbols, that is, with those that are bound up with a religious experience or a religious conception of the world.
This is why symbols have, as it were, a "numinous aura"; they reveal that the modalities of the spirit are at the same time manifestations of life, and, consequently, they directly engage human existence.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Symbolism
From whatever cause it arose the strong symbolistic colouring of religious practice during the first ages of Christianity is disputed by hardly anyone, and it was manifestly in harmony with the allegorical tone of the Apocalypse, of the Pastor of Hermas, and of other early apocryphal writings.
Other forms of symbolism are of much later development, for example the type which as been called "the Eucharistic Ecce Homo" representing Our Saviour with the sacred wounds, divested of his garments and standing in the tomb, not dead but living.
In the Apostolic Constitutions (II, xlvii) the bishop surrounded by the assembly of the faithful is compared to the helmsman of a ship; but the idea is as old as Tertullian (De bap., xii; P. L., l, 1214) and it was varied sometimes by comparing the Church to the Ark of Noe.

Essay: Religious symbolism and ethical vocabulary
Religious statements hold particular sway over those within the religious tradition, because they rely on and are supported by symbols, images, and beliefs within the religion.
Religious ethical statements are hard to talk about for this reason - they are neither completely of the secular or religious world, but are part of the cement that fuses the two.
However, the religious ethic is a symbol of that person's religious involvement in the world.

SSRN-Religious Objects as Legal Subjects by Frank Ravitch
Religious objects and religious symbolism generally do not lend themselves well to analysis under any of the legal tests developed by the Supreme Court, but of course, courts do not have the luxury of ignoring issues related to religious symbolism when such issues are appropriately raised by parties.
It also raises questions regarding the nature of "religious objects" since many symbolism cases involve objects that courts suggest exude varying levels of religiosity depending on their context, and which some critics suggest may or may not be perceived as religious depending on the perceiver's interpretive presumptions.
This article asserts that the courts and those criticizing them have generally overlooked or undervalued the significance of treating religious objects as legal subjects in the first place.
