Canon (priest) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the functions of the cathedral canons in the Roman Catholic Church is to elect a Vicar Capitular to serve during a sede vacante period of the diocese.
Originally, a canon was a cleric living with others in a clergyhouse or, later, in one of the houses within the precinct or close of a cathedral and ordering his life according to the orders or rules of the church.
A canon is a member of the chapter of (for the most part) priests, headed by a Dean, which is responsible for administering a cathedral or certain other churches that are styled collegiate church.

Regular canon chapters and colleges practicing the vita communis and were found in some of the same places that secular canons have been noted--cathedral churches and collegiate churches.
While many of the canons continued to remain a part of the resident cathedral chapter, the practice of requiring the chapter membership to adhere to a rule had fallen into disuse during the crisis of the ninth and tenth centuries.
Colleges of secular canons might be attached to a collegiate church and totally responsible for its entire ministry.

FAQ  - brief answers regarding the Canons Regular of Stift Klosterneuburg
Concurrently, since the Canon Regular is a priest, he is entrusted with the apostolate of the Church.
Hence from the Greek the name Canons or Regulars is also applied to those who live in religious houses and lead a Canonical and apostolic life, according to the precepts of regular observance laid down the by the holy Fathers.
So the Canons Regular claim ultimately that it is Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Apostles and the example of the common life of the early Church that founds the practice of the Canonical Life before there was a name or a rule given to it.

 More about Canons Regular
It was a Canon Regular, St Vicelin, who preached the gospel to the Vagriers, a pagan tribe of the Vends.
It is understood in the same sense in a canon of the Council of Clermont, 535 A.D., which ruled that those priests who are not "Canons" and who dwelt in the scattered private oratories, were to return to the Cathedral at least on the "greater" feast days.
Also worthy of note is the "Ordo Officiorum Ecclesiae Lateranensis" first written in 1145 by one Bernard, Prior of the Canons Regular of the Lateran, for his community which insured the proper fulfillment of the divine service in the Cathedral of the Supreme Pontiffs.

 Common Aspects of Monastic Life
In particular, some canonical houses are virtually indistinguishable from their most austere monastic counterparts; their members have no parochial duties and spend their days in prayer and contemplation [3].
Unsurprisingly, then, while monks and canons are often less learned than their secular counterparts, the reverse is often true for women [221].
Most monks and canons, with the exception of both types of conversi, are ordained, but nuns and canonesses never are, since women cannot become priests [120].
