Reformed Baptist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reformed Baptist Churches are distinct in that they are both Reformed (adhering to and showing respect for much of the theology defined by John Calvin) as well as Baptists (believing in baptism for believers only, and that by immersion).
Not all churches that are reformed in doctrine identify themselves as such.
Reformed Baptists attempt to derive all of their doctrine directly from the Bible, which they see as the sole authority of faith and practice.

The Reformed Objection to Natural Theology
It does not consider the range of objections to natural theology in the Reformed tradition, nor for that matter does it consider the positive role of inferential knowledge of God and theistic arguments originating with the Protestant Scholastic tradition.
This requires clarifying the positive role of natural theology given the claims of Reformed epistemology, or showing that theistic arguments can be important, even necessary, contributions to the positive epistemic status of theistic belief without undermining the central claims of Reformed epistemology.
Of the main philosophical and theological objections to natural theology found among Reformed theologians (i.e., immediacy of the natural knowledge of God, logical objections to theistic arguments, arguments from the noetic effects of sin, Sola Scriptura, and the impropriety of the apologetic use of theistic arguments), none provides a sufficient reason to reject natural theology.

Aspects of the Doctrine of Justification According to Reformed Theology
Reformed theology teaches that there are only two possible methods of justification and hence of obtaining the right and title to eternal life: (1) by perfectly obeying the law ourselves, or (2) by Christ's perfect fulfillment of the precepts and penalty of the law in our place.
Reformed theology teaches that, for the elect, the purpose of the eschatological judgment "according to works" is to determine degrees of rewards - not to determine whether we shall inherit eternal life, nor to pronounce a second justification, nor to prove that God's verdict of justification is just and in accordance with the truth.
Justification by faith is the jubilee trumpet of the gospel because it proclaims the gospel to the poor and destitute whose only door of hope is to roll themselves in total helplessness upon the grace and power and righteousness of the Redeemer of the lost.

"Holocaust theology" is also referred to as "theology nach Auschwitz" ("after Auschwitz" in German), due to the common practice of using "Auschwitz" as a shorthand for the Holocaust as a whole.

Some recognize that this is the case, and yet insist that it is still improper to call a Baptist "Reformed" because the baptism of infants is foundational to covenant theology, which is foundational to reformed theology.
We have seen that the terminology "Reformed Baptist" is a credible and accurate, and in fact necessary term, properly describing the theological view of those churches choosing to refer to themselves as such.
While Theonomists may be considered an exception by some, almost all "reformed" churches today recognize that the church and state need to be separate, that the state should not have control over the doctrine and practice of the church.

Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa
The most controversial aspect of the Dutch Reformed Church's theology has been its support of the apartheid system: that is, the insitutionalised separation of the people of South Africa according to their race.
The doctrines of the Dutch Reformed Churches of South Africa are encapsulated in the following three articles of faith: the Heidelberg Catechism, the Dutch Confession of Faith (Confessio Belgica), and the Canons of Dordt.
In the early 1980s the World Alliance of Reformed Churches declared apartheid to be a heresy and expelled the Dutch Reformed Church from its organisation.

 Theological Issues - PaulPerspective.com
The Mercersburg theologians were strongly opposed by Charles Hodge and the Princeton/Old School Presbyterians, the Dutch Reformed Church (which severed association from Nevin and Schaff's denomination over Mercersburg theology), and many leaders of their own German Reformed Church (then, the Reformed Church in the United States) for the Romanizing tendencies of Mercersburg theology.
Jacob Helffenstein, "A Perverted Gospel or, the Romanizing Tendency of the Mercersburg Theology," Leben 1:1 (Jan.-Mar. 2005)
The hallmark innovation of Mercersburg Theology was incorporating the ideas of German Transcendentalism/Romanticism into Christian thought, which led the Mercersburg theologians to deemphasize the Cross and centralize the Incarnation as the fundamental doctrine of Christian theology.

In contrast to the clear precision of traditional Reformed theology in distinguishing the roles of faith and obedience, Shepherd never carefully defines what his terminology means.
That Norman Shepherd’s theology of justification has attracted interest within Reformed circles in the past is indisputable, and that it is again a matter of great curiosity seems increasingly true.
Whatever the importance of the variety of matters hotly debated among Reformed Christians, the present issue is undoubtedly of the highest urgency, for the nature of the Gospel is directly at stake.

Christ Reformed Church: The Sacraments, Lecture 4 - Baptist Objections to Infant Baptism and the Reformed Response
Thus, as Reformed Christians, we baptize infants because we derive this from the theology of baptism in the New Testament, and which, as seen in the household baptisms of the New Testament appears to be the universal practice of the early church.
Summation: The Baptist interpretation of the New Covenant is based upon a faulty reading of Jeremiah 31:31 and Hebrews 8, not distinguishing between the works-based covenant made with Moses, which is obsolete with the coming of Christ, and the gracious covenant made with Abraham and which is fulfilled with the coming of Jesus Christ.
If true, the Baptist's interpretation of the New Covenant eliminates all children of believers from the New Covenant and cannot allow for "professing" Christians who are not among the elect to be members of the visible church as Scripture clearly teaches.

Theologia :: Soteriology :: A Short Note on N. T. Wright & His Reformed Critics
Because Reformed theology has been dominated by Paul, it is not surprising that Wright's fresh reading of the apostle has attracted a great deal of attention from Reformed thinkers.
But we must not shy away from semper Reformanda, from continually reforming our theology and confessions according to the Scriptures.
It is now becoming clear (and here is another place Reformed theologians must be very patient in working towards a proper understanding of Wright) that our interpretation of Paul has often been governed more by existential sixteenth century questions, than by the questions that led Paul to pen the epistles in the first place.

It has had a recurring appeal to the main-line liberal churches with Reformed and Presbyterian background, but its leaven has now also begun to infiltrate conservative, confessional Reformed and Presbyterian churches as some are seeking for another model for theology, such as the Auburn Avenue theology and the followers of Norman Shepherd.
The “new theology” resulted in heated controversy in the church on many issues (especially liturgical formulations) and led eventually to the Liberalism and church mergers of the early twentieth century.

Otherwise, it is simply a matter of historical theology that Arminianism was repudiated by every group with roots in the magisterial Reformation: Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian, Anglican, Congregationalist, and the early Baptists.
Reformed theology, as illustrated in the writings of Calvin and his successors and as taught in its confessions and catechisms, is clearly antithetical to legalism.
Legalism is not only apparent in Arminian circles, where human willing and running are given an efficacy that we do not accept, but is seen in some forms of pietism and hyper-puritanism within our Reformation communities.
