Topic: Record of the Nephites

 Book of Mormon Geography
Although the Book of Mormon is primarily a religious record of the Nephites, Lamanites, and Jaredites, enough geographic details are embedded in the narrative to allow reconstruction of at least a rudimentary geography of Book of Mormon lands.
Distances in the Book of Mormon are recorded in terms of the time required to travel from place to place.
The Book of Mormon is essentially a Nephite record, and most geographic elements mentioned are in Nephite territory.

A Third Jaredite Record: The Sealed Portion of the Gold Plates - FARMS JBMS
The Nephites in Zarahemla were aware, however, that their king had the interpreters, because he had used them to translate the large stone containing a history of the Jaredites (see Omni 1:20; Mosiah 8:13-14).
If he were chosen to hand over the sealed record and interpreters to the Nephites, he was likely aware of this calling when he wrote his last words, and he also would have known that he lived contemporaneously with the Nephites (see Ether 11:21), even though he must have been in his old age.
After the Lord ministered unto him and gave him the commandments concerning this record, the brother of Jared was shown another vision, or the rest of the same vision.

Moroni's Journeys considering two Cumorahs verses only one
He had not previously been given the added assignment of abridging the record of the Jaredites and the 'vision of all' of Mahonri Moriancumr, which was included in the 'sealed' portion of the golden plates recieved by Joseph Smith which where in adition to the abridged history of the Nephites.
And Moroni would have had to travel through this land to have witnessed the end of the Nephite Nation, as that is where the remaining Nephites fled, into the 'south country.'(Mormon 8:2) And after so witnessing this, he considered the end to be at hand and that he needed to hide up the record.
And by 400 AD he had finished all that he anticipated to do and in Mormon 8, in his father's book he records that he was hiding up the record.

Book of Mormon (Mormon's record) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to the text, the first seven chapters were written by the prophet Mormon and the last two were written by his son Moroni.
The book thus explains the alleged provenance of the Book of Mormon as an ancient record, mostly of the Nephites, compiled by Mormon and Moroni on Golden Plates.

AN ADDRESS TO ALL BELIEVERS IN CHRIST
The Bible being the sacred record of the Jews who inhabited the eastern continent; the Book of Mormon being the sacred record of the Nephites (descendants of Joseph, the son of Jacob), who inhabited the western continent, or this land of America.
The Book of Mormon tells us plainly that the words of Christ are to be made known in the sealed records of the Nephites, and in the record of the Jews: (the Bible) and this excludes the Book of Doctrine and Covenants.
It says that more records are yet to come forth from the "book that is sealed," which book is the sacred scriptures or records of the people who inhabited this land of America.

Note, however, that "the language of Nephi" which Mosiah 24:4 and 6 report as beginning to be taught by Nephite dissenters "among all the people of the Lamanites" was a writing system, not a tongue as such, which verse 6 makes clear.
It is true that the name "Nephites" sometimes connotes those who shared culture, religion, and ethnicity or biology.
Their wickedness and apostasy culminated in the escape of Mosiah and his group from the land of Nephi to the land of Zarahemla (see Omni 1:13-14).

The Book of Mormon is suppose to be a record of a conflict between the Nephites who were the people of God and the Lamanites who were evil.
One problem is that LDS church claims that the Lamanites of the Book of Mormon are American Indians who are the descendants of the Hebrews and in particular the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh of the 6th Century B.C. Anthropologists tell us that the American Indians are Mongoloids and not Semites.

Mormonism Research Ministry - Articles - DNA and the Book of Mormon Record
While I agree that both the Nephites and Lamanites had their times of unbelief, the Book of Mormon fails to mentions other nations who came in to "take away from them the lands of their possessions," especially those whose genetic makeup would take us to Asia.
Mormon Apostle James Talmage noted that, "The Nephites suffered extinction about 400 A.D., but the Lamanites lived on in their degraded course, and are today extant upon the land as the American Indians" (Jesus the Christ, 23rd ed., p.49).
According to the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, the record of the Jaredites "hints at an epic genre rooted in the Ancient Near East" (2:717).

Talmage said that Christ would visit the lost tribes of Israel in the North Country and they would record His visit in a book of scripture and bring it with them to Zion in America in the last days where it would be joined with the Bible and the Book of Mormon.
His prediction was based upon 3 Nephi 16:1-4 and 17:4 in the Book of Mormon, which says Christ would appear to the lost tribes of Israel and they would record His visit in a new book of scripture.
Talmage also said that some who heard him speak in 1916 would live to read that new scripture.

The Nephites, initially a righteous people, eventually fell into wickedness, and they were utterly destroyed by their rivals the Lamanites circa A.D. Most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that the Nephites were a historic people.
In the Book of Mormon, the Nephites (BoM Arabic نافيين Nāfiyyīn) are a people descended from or associated with Nephi, a prophet who traveled with his family from Jerusalem to the Western Hemisphere circa 600 B.C. at the urging of God.
However, most mainstream archeologists argue that there is currently no compelling evidence that this group ever existed.

LDS members claim that the prophet Mormon, who they believe originally compiled the history that became the Book of Mormon, also had Hebrew roots, supposedly being descended from an ancient Israelite named Nephi.
