Topic: Reason

Reason - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The limits within which reason may be used have been laid down differently in different churches and periods of thought: on the whole, modern religion tends to allow to reason a wide field, reserving, however, as the sphere of faith the ultimate (supernatural) truths of theology.
In theology, reason, as distinguished from faith, is the human critical faculty exercised upon religious truth whether by way of discovery or by way of explanation.
These fundamental truths are the causes or "reasons" that things exist or happen.

Faith and Reason [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The interplay between reason and faith is an important topic in the philosophy of religion.
Reason aims at empirical truth; religion aims at divine truths.
While the issues the interplay between faith and reason addresses are endemic to almost any religious faith, this article will focus primarily on the faith claims found in the three great monotheistic world religions: Judaism, Islam, and particularly Christianity.

 all things William
Reason, or the ratio of all we have already known, is not the same that it shall be when we know more.
To save the world requires faith and courage: faith in reason, and courage to proclaim what reason shows to be true.
As there is no worse lie than a truth misunderstood by those who hear it, so reasonable arguments, challenges to magnanimity, and appeals to sympathy or justice, are folly when we are dealing with human crocodiles and boa-constrictors.

 Medieval Theories of Practical Reason
When Kant describes practical reason as a necessary law for all rational beings, whose actions are always to be judged according to maxims completely bound to the concept of the will of a rational being, one may see parallels to the Franciscan doctrine of the autonomy of the will.
Since the goal of practical reason is action not knowledge, the truth attained by the intellect must be caused by its conformity to right desire.
In operative reasoning there is not the same truth or practical rectitude according to its proper , but only according to its common principles.

 Objectivism and Thomas Jefferson: Reason-1
What this says, then, is that reason as an abstract entity, unrelated to anything practical and experienced in the real world, is absolute.
Only the best, most convincing arguments of reason can bring us to a decision on such vital questions, and even then, a generally agreed conclusion can be overturned by better more convincing reason.
Thus, the real truth seeker always has an open mind to those who disagree with him, realizing that he is more likely to get a better understanding of whatever is at issue from opposing opinions than he is from those who agree with him.

 Reasonable: Enabling Better Reasoning
- L. I found Reasonable to be great for seeing other people's arguments, and found that when so easily interpretable, we could see the heart of the conflict.
Usually it (at least in the ones that I remember) was a conflict in definition, not a fallacy in either person's argument.

Reich intends REASON as a kind of handbook for the politically moderate American who knows that the grand egalitarian tradition is under siege, wants to understand how the Radcons have done it, and wants to do something about it.
Reason, at its heart is merely reasonable and as such is a weak argument against the overwhelming moral absolutes of the Market God,the other God, and their handservants, dissembling and deception.
It is also a core tenet of democracy which believes with some optimism tempered with some reasonable amount of pessimism that through discussion evil might avoided, that the common good might be found and that provision might be made for it.

Reason is a guide to confronting and derailing what he sees as the mounting threat to American liberty, prosperity, and security posed by the radical conservatives–Radcons, as he calls them–whose agenda has dominated public discourse and radically affected government action since the election, by a minority vote, of George W. Bush.

Reason is often contrasted with Experience (as in the dispute between Rationalism and Empiricism) and with Intellect, which in this context refers to the aspect of cognition in which concepts remain stable and provide the basis for interpretation of experience.
In Hegel's system, Reason is the unity of Consciousness-as-such and Self-Conciousness (and so negates itself as the Theoretical Spirit and the Practical Spirit) and becomes Objective Spirit – all the phenomena of history, politics, culture and so on – all, according to Hegel, the work of Reason.
